Code of Behaviour As an Ernest student, I am expected to follow the 4 C s of being CO-OPERATIVE, CONSCIENTIOUS, CARING, and COURTEOUS. I will be at school on time and ready to learn. I will follow school and classroom routines. I will use polite language. I will work and play safely. I will respect all property. I will co-operate with all staff and students. I will respect others and their rights. I will solve problems peacefully. I will work diligently. I will strive to do my best everyday. Punctuality and Attendance It is important for me to be at school regularly and on time: I must be on time in the morning (8:40), afternoon (12:30), and at recess times (when the bell rings, line up ). If I am going to be absent, I will ask my parents to call the school in the morning ( ). If I normally stay at school for lunch, and I need to go off school property at any time for lunch, I must bring a note signed by parent/guardian for each time this occurs. If I am going to be absent in the afternoon, I will bring a note in the morning or my parents will call the school. When I leave school during the day, my parent(s)/ guardian must sign me out at the office. If I need to leave school before dismissal time, I will bring a note from my parent so my teacher knows. 2

Entry I will follow these routines at entry times: Arrive at school just before entry bell at 8:40 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Be on time for school. Instruction starts at 8:45 a.m. in the morning and at 12:35 p.m. in the afternoon. I must be in class ready to learn by these times! Remain outside until the bell rings. No ball playing; playscape is closed. Line up quickly when I hear the bell ring, in the correct line at my own door. Wait at the door until a teacher lets us in. Walk up the stairs in single file quietly, orderly, with one hand on the railing. Remove my hat at the door (winter hats excepted). Hang up my coat and belongings and walk directly to class. Stand in the stairwells or sit on the steps up to the landing, when the teacher lets us in during bad weather. Enter only through my regular doors. Only parents and Visitors may use the front doors. However, if I arrive after my class has entered, my regular door will be locked and I must ring the front door bell, come in and get a late slip to be admitted to my class. If I am in Kindergarten, a student or adult will bring me inside. If I bring Kindergarten children into the school, I will go back outside through the North doors as soon as I have seen them enter the Kindergarten hall area. Dismissal I follow these routines at dismissal time: If I walk home with other students, I leave through my own door and meet the other students outside the youngest student s door. Expect school to end at 3:20, unless there is a note or a phone call home in advance by the teacher to make other arrangements. When dismissed, I will leave school property and go directly home. The playscapes are closed for safe dismissal from 3:20 to 3:45 pm. No ball playing! Appropriate Behaviour and Language I play games and participate in activities that are cooperative and safe, in the classroom and outdoors: I am respectful to others! Use kind words to solve problems peacefully. Make kind and respectful choices when dealing with others. Play and work cooperatively. Play fighting is not tolerated; avoid all forms of physical contact, rough play, touching. Wait my turn. Allow other people a chance! Do not leave others out. Treat others with kindness and respect! Use polite language at all times Do not tease others, call people names, or use inappropriate language. 3

Do not spread rumours about others Bullying is not tolerated at Ernest Public School incidents of physical and verbal bullying will be addressed with serious consequences Belongings I look after my own belongings: Hang up all of my belongings or put them on the racks in an orderly fashion. Line up my boots against the wall on the ceramic floor only. Label all my belongings with my name. Check Lost and Found for my items and take them home. Appropriate Dress I wear clothing appropriate for school activities and the weather: Wear a warm coat, hat, mittens and boots on cold winter days. Bring appropriate clothing for gym on gym days. My teacher will tell my parents and me about appropriate gym clothing. No sandals for gym. Any messages on clothing (such as T-shirts, etc.) must be appropriate. No spaghetti strap tops, and no bare midriff or tummy. Students must wear clothing that covers from the neck to mid thigh. No mini skirts, and no short shorts. No sandals on play-scape or while playing sports. Clothing must not reflect any gang related implications (e.g. no bandanas, etc.) Appropriate Items for School I must bring only appropriate items to school: Do not bring expensive items to school (e.g. electronic items). I understand that the school is not responsible for any personal items I might bring to school. If you bring a cell phone to school for safety reasons before and after school, it must remain in your bag. No cell phones are allowed at any time on the school yard for privacy and safety reasons. As well, students are not allowed to make calls on their cell phones during the school day. All calls made by students must go through the office. This is an important safety rule. Leave dangerous items, toy weapons, water squirters, hockey sticks, skateboards, roller blades, baseball bats and scooters at home. NO WEAPONS (e.g. knives, weapon replicas, etc.) may come to school. Bring toys and other items to school only when I ask permission from the teacher. No baseball bats and/or tennis raquets must be brought to school. Tennis balls are allowed at school. Do not bring hard balls (of any size). Do not bring or chew gum at school, either inside or outside the building. Lunchroom I will follow these rules in our lunchroom: We are a NUT FREE SCHOOL. Do not bring any food/items with nuts. 4

We are a GOLD Eco School bring snacks / lunches in recyclable or reusable containers. Items that will not go in the recycle bin or green bin will be sent home. Remain in the lunchroom until dismissed by lunch supervisor. Bring all my belongings to the lunchroom at 11:30 a.m. Bring a litterless lunch in a labelled lunch bag. Use reusable containers. Sit while I am eating and talk in a soft voice. Clear my area by putting appropriate items in the recycle bin or green bin. No garbage is allowed. Do this only when I am asked to line up to be dismissed. Finish all my food and drinks in the lunchroom. Bring my food and drinks in unbreakable and reusable containers. No glass! Bring my own spoon and/or fork! Do not bring non-recyclable items. Place lunch bags in classroom bins located at the stairwells at my entry/dismissal door. Go directly outside or to an activity when I m dismissed from lunch. Get permission from a lunchroom supervisor if I have to leave the lunchroom for any reason. If I am outside, I will ask the adult at the door for permission and a pass to go inside for a drink or the washroom. I will respect the door monitors. Stay at school at lunchtime unless I bring a written note from my parents or guardians. I will give the note to my teacher by 9:00 a.m. and the teacher will send it to the office so they know I have permission to leave. Go quietly, in an orderly fashion, to Gym B during indoor lunches. Choose a quiet classroom activity with my friends during indoor lunchtimes in the gym. Stay seated in your chosen space. No running games or rough play! Recess When I am playing outside at recess or at lunch recess I follow these routines: Outdoor Recess: Use playscape safely as it is meant to be used. No backpacks or coats with strings/scarves when I m on playscape. Play within the boundaries. No rough games allowed! Keep running games for the field. Avoid running on the paved areas. Stay out of the parking lot, the front of the school, and area past the soccer field. Play in the park only if supervised by a teacher. The park is off school property! Play cooperatively in the sand. No throwing sand! Leave sticks, stones, sand, and snow on the ground at all times. I will not throw any of these. I can be suspended if I do. I must stay off the snowhills!! Remain outside during recess. Get a pass from the teacher if I have to use the washroom or need to get a drink. 5

Indoor Recess Rules I will remain in my classroom unless I have permission from the teacher on duty to go to the washroom. I will choose a safe, quiet, indoor activity (e.g. balls and skipping ropes are NOT indoor activities), stay seated in one place, no moving around the room. Playscape On the playscape I will play safely and follow these rules. Playscape is closed before first bell (8:25 8:40 am), and after school during dismissal (3:20 3:35). Stay off the playscape when the cones are around it or when I am told. Avoid touching anyone and no running on the playscape. This means no games of tag or blocking when on the equipment. Use the slide to slide down not climb up. Slide down on your bottom, face forward. No throwing stones or any other material on the slide. No skipping ropes or other toys on the playscape. No sandals on playscape. Leave gravel, sand, stones, and sticks on the ground. One person at a time on the tire, and always sit on the tire. Stand by the post to wait for a turn on the tire. This means no pushing the tire. I must not climb on top of the red tube at any time. Fire Drills During a fire drill, I behave in an orderly fashion and follow all of the school routines: Stop what I am doing immediately when I hear the buzzer, line up and walk out in single file. Walk when I am exiting and entering the building. Be absolutely silent, both inside and outside, during the entire fire drill. Use an alternate exit when notified by an adult. Hold open the door when I am the first person at an exit door, and be sure that it does not shut on another person. Close it when last person is out. Leave by the closest exit if I am not in my own classroom (e.g. washroom, ESL, library, Special Ed.), and join my class outside in our meeting spot. Follow my teacher and return silently to the classroom when I hear two bells. I must wear indoor shoes at all times in the school. Computers When I am using the computer I am expected to follow these rules: Use only school programs. Do not copy or download copyrighted programs. Copy the work of others only with the permission of the author. Make certain that only appropriate language, graphics, and images are used. No eating or drinking when at the computer. No internet use without teacher supervision and permission. I will sign a contract to follow computer rules or lose computer privileges. 6

School Trips On any school trip, I will follow the Ernest Code of Behaviour, the school bus routines and safety rules, and follow all instructions by the teacher and other trip supervisors at all times. I understand that if I do not do this, I may lose future trip privileges. School Bus While on a school bus, I will behave in an orderly fashion and follow these routines: Stay in my seat while the bus is in motion. Keep bags/knapsacks on lap or on floor between my feet. Sit facing forward and keep my arms, legs, and head out of the aisle. Avoid distracting the bus driver or other users of the road. Talk quietly on the bus. I will not sing unless I have permission from my teacher and the bus driver. Adjust the windows only if I have permission from my teacher or bus driver. No pushing when getting on or off the bus. One at a time only! No eating on the bus. Finish what I am eating or drinking before I get on the bus. Talk to the bus driver only in an emergency. Be polite.
