1 Human Anatomy & Physiology Biology 204 Fall 2013 Welcome to Biology 204! Please review this syllabus carefully and refer to it throughout the semester. It contains information on the format of the course, course requirements, schedule, contact information, and services to help you be successful. Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 11:45 AM in LA 159. Course Description: Biology 204 is the continuation of a two-semester introduction to the structure and function of the human body. The lecture portion will emphasize the function of the lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary, and reproductive systems. The recitation portion of the class is held in the lecture hall, and is integrated into the lecture. The laboratory portion will emphasize anatomy, giving you hands-on experience with a variety of anatomical models and specimens. Instructor Contact Information: Karen K. 2 Course Objectives: Objective 1. Describe basic information concerning the structure and function of the human body. Objective 2. Explore the principles and processes through which the body maintains homeostasis. Objective 3. Predict how the body responds to homeostatic imbalances. Course Requirements: Attendance: You are expected to attend both lecture and lab. It is your responsibility to obtain lecture notes and handouts from a classmate if you are unable to attend class. It is also your responsibility to find out from a peer what course announcements were made during your absence. Attending lecture along with considerable out-of-class study is essential for your success in this course. Evaluation: There is a single grade given for the course. Grades are based on points earned on the following assessments: four lecture exams, two laboratory practical exams, and eight lab quizzes. Grades are posted on blackboard. Lecture Exams: Each of the one hour lecture exams will contain 50 multiplechoice questions. The final lecture exam will not be cumulative. Lab Practicals: The two 60-item practicals will test your ability to recognize and name anatomical structures. Lab Quizzes: Eight 8-item lab quizzes are scheduled during the semester, four before the first practical and four after the first practical. Each will cover material from the previous week. Your lowest lab quiz score from each half of the semester will be dropped so that you can earn a total of 48 points from the lab quizzes. You may take a quiz only in the lab for which you are registered. There are no make-ups for laboratory quizzes. 3-Digit I.D. Number: Each student will be assigned a three digit number to use on all exams and quizzes. All grades will be recorded and posted using this private number. It is important to remember your 3-digit number and darken it in on every test answer sheet. You may record your 3 digit I.D. number here: Always check the grades posted on blackboard to make sure your score is posted. You will need to inform me if your grade is not posted. Biology 204 2

4 Make-up Exam Policy: Lecture exams: A limited number of make-up exams may be given due to extenuating circumstances on an individual basis. If you must miss an exam due to a university sponsored event (i.e. athletics), you must notify me one week prior to the exam so alternative arrangements can be made. If you miss an exam due to an unpredicted situation (i.e. illness, family crisis, or emergency), you must contact me before the time of the exam via . If more than one test or practical is missed, make-up test arrangements for a second make-up will require the Biology Chair s approval, and you must provide evidence of extenuating circumstances for both missed tests. The large number of students in this course makes individual make-up tests impossible. Makeups for all missed exams will be given Tuesday. November 26 at 9 am or 1 pm. Lab practicals: Lab practicals need to be taken the same week they are scheduled, if they cannot be taken at the assigned time. Due to the lab space and time required to provide these tests, an incomplete grade will be the only option offered for make-up lab practicals after the week of the scheduled practical. Lab Quizzes: No make-ups are permitted for lab quizzes, even in another lab class during the same week it is scheduled. Any lab quiz not taken at the scheduled time will result in score of 0. However, your lowest lab score for each half of the semester will be dropped. Biology 204 Laboratory Class times University policy prohibits students from attending a lab for which they are not registered, unless they have permission of the laboratory instructor. If you must miss a lab, use the following information to arrange for a make-up. If circumstances arise causing you to discontinue the class, you must go through official withdrawal procedures (submit a drop/add form to the Registrar s Office) or drop your class through OASIS. Failing to submit this form will result in F grades for courses not completed. Weather Cancellations: Decisions to cancel classes due to weather are made by the administrators of the university, not by your instructor. Local radio stations will announce cancellations, or phone for weather-related announcements. Any cancelled exam will be held during the next class meeting; any exam scheduled the class after a cancellation will be postponed one class. Biology 204 4

Academic Dishonesty, whether giving or receiving test information, is a serious offense that may lead to a failing grade for the course and dismissal from the academic program. Be aware of the projector in the rear of the hall. 2. Please do not distract one another or the instructor by chatting with your neighbor or texting in class. 3. Blackboard Current grades, PowerPoint illustrations and animations are available on Blackboard. Center for Academic Support and Advancement (CASA) Lecture Supplemental Instruction and Tutoring Weekly help sessions are scheduled through CASA and are available to all students at no cost. These sessions are conducted by student leaders who have recently completed the course successfully. Lecture SI times will be announced in lecture and posted on the class website. Individual tutoring is available at no cost through CASA - The Learning Center in Kettler G23, You are entitled to 2 free hours per week of one-to-one tutoring. Make all appointments online through TutorTrac at ipfw.edu/casa. Lecture Study Organizer The lecture study organizer recommends chapter questions that are useful in preparing for lecture exams. Lecture study organizers may be downloaded from the class web site at any time. Practice Lecture Test Questions A handout with sample lecture test questions will be provided before each lecture exam. These are not available on the web. Attending and Recording Lecture Attending lecture along with considerable out-of-class study is essential for your success in this course. Students often feel that audio taping the lecture is helpful. Lab Supplemental Instruction (Open Lab) These labs are open to all Biology 203/204 students, and will be held weekly, except the first week of class and during weeks in which a lab practical is scheduled. Open labs provide additional study time and are supervised by a qualified student leader. Times will be announced in class and posted on the class website. Sample lab practical questions Lab practical questions will be set up during the review labs prior to each lab practical so that you may be better prepared for the practical. Biology 204 6
