1 COURSE SYLLABUS MATH 1314 College Algebra COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: MATH ZA - College Algebra (on line) COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: In-depth study and applications of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions, and system of equations using matrices. Additional topics such as sequences, series, probability, and conics may be included. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in DMTH 0200 or Math placement test equivalent. Instructor: G. Solve equations and perform operations with functions. 2. Solve and graph polynomial and rational functions. 3. Graph and solve exponential and logarithmic functions. 4. Solve systems of equations using matrices and determinants. 5. Solve problems relating to partial fractions, sequences, and series Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of properties of functions, including domain and range, operations, compositions, and inverses. 2. Recognize and apply polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions and solve related equations. 3. Apply graphing techniques. 4. Evaluate all roots of higher degree polynomial and rational functions. 5. Recognize, solve and apply systems of linear equations using matrices. 3 REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS: Required Text and Materials: College Algebra: Beecher, Penna & Bittinger: Addison Wesley 4th Edition ISBN: For this on line class, the text is NOT required as it is available as an e-book with additional learning aides in MyMathLab which is the classwork platform. Scientific Calculator a calculator is also available on the platform (No graphing calculators). Required: My Math Lab Student Access Kit ISBN: X GRADING CRITERIA GRADING SCALE Chapter Tests 55% A % Quizzes 15% B 80 89% Homework 15% C 70 79% Final Exam 15% D 60 69% F 0 59% DEPARTMENTAL PARTICIPATION POLICY: Before 2012, students were recorded as No Shows if they had not attended class by the Official Record Date. No Shows receiving financial aid had this aid removed resulting in the student having to pay for their classes or they were deregistered from school. The recording of No Shows continues, but our TSTC-HARLINGEN policy requires that students attending class must be designated as Shows by the instructor and merely attending class will not accomplish that. The student will receive this designation based upon completion of academic work demonstrating the student s commitment to completing all the required coursework and passing the course. In this class, you must purchase access to and register in MyMathLab course adams82787 and complete the first homework assignment (minimum grade 75%) and pass the first quiz (you will be allowed 3 attempts) by May 16, 2013 which is the Official Record Date. Students in compliance with this policy will be labeled Shows and those failing to comply may lose any financial aide they receive for this course. During the course of the semester, students have three choices: (1) participate and complete all assignments timely, or (2) withdraw (student responsibility), or (3) get an F at the end of the course. If a student falls behind the schedule and has assignments closing without being completed, they need to drop the course. The State of Texas has now set a limit of 6 drops that a student may have during their entire college career (all schools combined).

System requirements may vary depending on your course ( the google chrome and firefox browsers seem to produce the best results).
