3 School of Humanities The distinct character of the University of the Aegean lies in the fact that it offers a unique network of academic ports of studies and research in the frame of a dynamic and competitive institution. Situated on 6 beautiful islands in the Aegean Archipelago, the University of the Aegean challenges the prevailing perceptions about limitations of the academic endeavour in Greece, both in terms of educational approach and organizational structure as well. The effects of such challenges have brought in academic achievements and the rapid development of the institution. The School of Humanities, is one of the 6 Schools of the University of the Aegean (Polytechnic School, School of Social Sciences, School of the Environment, School of Business, School of Sciences, School of Humanities). In the 20th year οf its function it connects the constant and imaginative development of its three departments (Department of Primary Education, Department of Pre-school Education Sciences and Educational Design, Department of Mediterranean Studies) aspiring to be home ground) and touchstone for individuals and their synergies: about graduates at undergraduate level and graduates at postgraduate level form a dynamic population with strong references to the island and the philosophy of an open University. Τhis is about a School which interlaces the nodes and threads of a multi-complex research network, comprising 12 postgraduate programs, 9 research laboratories and teaching stuff of about 70 instructors and trying through a great variety of attractive knowledge & research subjects to support and promote science, education and arts at local and national level via multiple collaborations with scientists and researchers in Greece and abroad..

4 Foundation of the School of Humanities The School of Humanities (S.H.) of the University of the Aegean is located in the center of the modern city of Rhodes. It was founded on 4th November 1997 (Presidential Decree 316, Government Gazette 223 A). The complex of buildings hosting the functions of the School of Humanities, are very close to the walls of the medieval castle and they were built during the administration of Rhodes by Mario Lago ( ) in the framework of his "Politics of Stone" and with the designs of Florestano de Fausto. In their initial phase the buildings were a military camp (Caserma Regina Elena); after the Second World War they hosted the Gendarmerie School.

5 Building Infrastructure The School of Humanities is hosted in a complex of buildings, at 1, Republic street very close to the walls of the medieval castle. 7 Τhe Departments of the School of Humanities Department of Primary Education Department of Preschool Education Sciences and Educational Design Department of Mediterranean Studies The Department of Primary Education (D.P.E.) of the University of the Aegean in its present form was established in 1984 along with the University of the Aegean (presidential decree 83/1984, OG 31/ ) and is a continuation of the pedagogical Academy of Rhodes, which had been in operation since The Department of Preschool Education Sciences and Educational Design (D.P.E.S.E.D.) was established in 1987 and henceforth contributes significantly to the Greek educational system through solidly structured undergraduate and postgraduate programs, a high level of research on sciences of education and high quality standards as far as teachers in-service training is concerned. The Department of Mediterranean Studies (D.M.S.) was founded in 1997 and has been in operation since the academic year Its mission, as described by P.D 316, is the cultivation and promotion of the knowledge of the language, the ancient and modern history, the ancient culture, the economic and political structures of the countries of the Mediterranean, with emphasis on the southern and southeastern Mediterranean..

18 The Library The University of the Aegean Library operates as a self-administered and decentralized service of the Institution and consists of: The Central Library The Library Branches (in Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Rhodes, Syros & Lemnos) The University of the Aegean Library follows the same structure as the University does and, from an administrative point of view, the Library is arranged in the following two groups: Administration (Central Service) Departments (Branches) The University of the Aegean Library is the only Library in Greece with branches on six (6) islands. Despite the geographic dispersion, all Library branches operate as a unified service with a single administrative unit and a common policy on all issues related to processing and cataloging, library strategy, planning and development. The operation of the Library branches is supervised and coordinated by the central service in Lesvos which is also in charge of the contacts with other institutions.

19 Student Welfare Student Welfare deals with the basic facilities for installation and living. This service ensures the quality of living for students. Basic services of student care include gaining access or renewing the right of access to benefits such as food, housing, health care, writings and scholarships.

20 Counseling Center There are branches of the Counseling Center for Psychological Support of the University of the Aegean in every School of the University of the Aegean. This service was established to help students cope with any problems which arise during their studies. In particular, on the one hand it gives them the opportunity to participate in individual and group counseling and, on the other, in common activities with other students of the university community. The Counseling Center is staffed with professional psychologists with expertise and experience in Counseling and Psychotherapy and further sustained by specialized Faculty members.

21 Summer Schools The Summer Schools of the University of the Aegean offer a unique opportunity to young people, mature scientists and researchers from around the world to participate in state-of-the-art research activities and exchange innovative ideas and methods while exploring the marvelous Aegean islands. At the same time, it is a unique opportunity for the University of the Aegean, an international research -oriented University, to showcase further its academic activity to the international academic community while supporting the sustainability of the local communities. In this frame, an intense activity has been developed in the Rhodes Unit as follows: 1. (10) Summer schools organized by the Departments of the School of Humanities 2. 22 Lifelong Learning Programs The University of the Aegean promoting Excellency at all levels of education and learning has been offering since October 2012 innovative programs of vocational training and expertise in frontline professional fields which are addressed to university and school graduates alike. These e-learning programs are carried out : by worldwide noted and prestigious university professors and in some cases by well-established professionals in their fields with the use of model forms of e-learning and by capitalizing on and expanding the award-winning, at a European level, experience and know-how of the University of the Aegean in the organization and operation of e-learning programs at an undergraduate and postgraduate level The implementation of these programs is based on certified structures of development and design. 23 ERASMUS+ Europe needs more inclusive societies that enable their citizens to play an active role in democratic life. Education and youth work is a key to promoting the common European values of social inclusion, enhancing intercultural understanding and a sense of belonging to a community, and preventing violent extremist trends. The Erasmus + program also enhances the possibilities for cooperation and mobility with partner countries, especially in the fields of higher / tertiary education and youth. Mobility through the Erasmus + program is addressed to students and university staff of teaching and management. Erasmus + enables undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD students to undertake a small part of their studies abroad. Mobility attendance is recognized by matching equivalent courses (and ECTS credits). Practical training for employers (businesses or organizations) in program countries is another opportunity given to students or to students who have graduated recently. Every Department defines a Faculty member as Erasmus+ Coordinator in order to help the students organize their mobilities to the foreign institutions.

24 Practice Programs The Practice Programs in the School of Humanities are formed as follows: 1. Practice Programs embedded in the curricula of the Pedagogical Departments of the School of Humanities. The specific programs support systematically the transition of undergraduate students from theory to praxis meaning their self-directed teaching and pedagogical work in the school units Practice Programs of D.P.E: Practice Programs of D.P.E.S.E.D: 2. Practice Program which is carried out in the context of the Operational Program Human Capital Development, Education and Lifelong Learning and which is co-funded by the European Union (European Social Fund) and National Resources and aims to the immediate connection of theoretical and laboratory studies of the students with practical implementation. This action facilitate(s): the acquaintance of the trainees with potential employers, the trainees to acquire their first work experience, the trainees to be well-guided and choose wisely the appropriate specializations in their further academic course the acquaintance of the employers with potential employees the familiarization and use by the employers of new specialties dealing with the planning, implementation and evaluation of innovative educational programs.
