4 SECTION A Plan of action chalked out by the institute in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement Introduction Plan of action for the academic programmes is formulated in a democratic and participatory manner through consultative process across various levels - from the university senate down to the individual departments. The IQAC constituted in the initial year of NAAC accreditation monitors the planning and implementation process as well as the review of various academic programmes. Commencing from the academic transactions at the Board of Studies meeting (with internal Faculty and external experts) at the department level, through the periodic meeting of Heads of departments at the Institute level, the process of planning and execution is carried forward through the Academic council and further up to the Syndicate and Senate meetings, in order to get their approval for the proposed academic, research and extension programmes. All the teaching staff reported for duty a week in advance of the reopening of the Institute with the purpose of grounding the activities planned. Students were provided with Time Table, calendar and orientation for the academic year. All the students were asked to register for courses on the re opening day. All the faculties/departments/centres initiated necessary measures for the implementation of the activities planned. In addition, the individual departments framed their own plan of action aimed at enhancing quality in all the three dimensions of education namely, teaching, research and extension. The details are given below faculty and department wise. To establish a Centre for Distance education FACULTY OF RURAL SOCIAL SCIENCES Cooperation Initiating measures to restructure the existing B.Coop. degree programme into B.A Cooperation so as to fall in line with UGC notification Taking measures to strengthen the research programmes including post doctoral research. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institute General Knowledge of students is upscaled by designing new programmes, introducing new courses, revising the syllabi periodically, and providing options for students to choose from a variety of courses. Research is focused around contemporary problems confronting the communities around and the society at large, with the aim of generating scientific and pragmatic Workshop on personality development for PG final year students solutions. Disadvantaged groups in the communities around and the general community are constantly supported and guided to become informed citizens. National Seminar organized by Dept. of Political Science Current developments in society are debated by Faculty across the state and country in specific fora; proceedings are documented for public use and policy recommendations are forwarded to the change agents. Collaboration established with Government, research and training institutions, industry, NGOs and Funding partners complement the academic, research and community service programmes. Institute follows the reservation policy of the Government in admissions and appointments and supports the students from economically and socially disadvantaged groups with financial assistance. 10 Rural Industries Management Seven Training Programmes on Skill Development in manufacturing bakery products were organized for 420 women Self Help Group members of the districts of the Nilgiris and Perambalur. Placement services offered to nearly 50% of students of BA (RIM) FACULTY OF RURAL ORIENTED SCIENCES Biology Research is facilitated among Post graduate students through dissertation; submitted proposals on need based biological themes for students funding projects like TNSCST, Chennai. Research scholars are encouraged to submit proposals to funding agencies such as UGC, DBT, DST, and New Delhi and apply for fellowship to carryout eco-friendly, easily adaptable and replicable research for the upliftment of the rural masses to improve the quality of life. Extension activities are carried out by curricular activities and also by conducting training programmes to rural people, SC, ST, unemployed youth and others on mushroom culture, vermiculture, ornamental fish culture, sericulture, composting etc through funded projects for economic uplift, employment generation, family nutrition and environmental protection. Chemistry The syllabus was revised keeping in view the needs of the industry Students are trained to go to the villages and involve themselves in classroom teaching in village schools. To inculcate the spirit of competition, various intra and inter college events were conducted as part of the Science Day celebrations and Resonance, the Department festival. Dr.G.Karthikeyan organized a one day workshop on installation and working, operation details of hand pump attachable deflouridation plants (for Panchayat Presidents on Aug 29. ) With the assistance from C.P.Ramaswamy Foundation, Chennai, a cycle rally was organized with the students of UG and PG Chemistry programmes as volunteers to encourage rain water harvesting led by Dr.M.G.Sethuraman and Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu in the Jubilee Fest Dr.S.Abraham John on 1 st. 12 Physics The department has been providing quality education by providing the best possible learning inputs to the students. In addition to this the students are given training in teaching children of schools situated in rural areas. This is done with a view to improving the standard of science learning and to inculcate the spirit of learning science amongst the rural children. This helps the students of GRU to have a good grasp of the subject Home Science Incorporated important aspects in UG/PG curriculum as suggested in UGC Model Curriculum. Undertaken research to promote family and social well being Rural Technology Centre The RTC strengthens itself to add the Technology dimension to the Rural Institute by building activities in the following four major avenues. a) Development oriented technologies b) Technology restructuring for mass employment c) Delivery models d) Innovative courses and training programmes FACULTY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT Adult Continuing Education and Extension 22 awareness generation programmes were conducted to increase knowledge on current issues and 3929 men & women were benefited. Three skill training sessions were conducted and 100 villagers were benefited. 14 continuing education courses were conducted and 727 men and women were benefited. Through collaborative programme with NGOs, 313 men & women of NGOs were benefited on career guidance. 774 secondary and higher secondary students benefited with the financial aid from Central Social Welfare Board. Three Awareness Generation training camps were conducted. 128 women field workers were trained. The staff of the department participated in an All India Radio programme. Vision and Gram Munetram were published. Extension Education The department organized village placement programmes for the entire institute and various other outreach programmes so as to fulfill the objective of the institute The Department offers extension-based, development-oriented post graduate and doctoral programmes. The Department has been carrying out research in Extension and Rural Development. It undertakes monitoring and evaluation for Government and Non-Government organizations. The Department has an active Centre on Participatory Learning and Management Techniques. 13 It has taken up action based research in the field of hunger free area programme and disability. The Department provides consultancy to various government departments, NGOs, funding agencies both national and international on Participatory Rural Development, Community Based Organizations, Participatory Rural Appraisal, Micro Plan, Disability and Tribal Development. It imparts training to extension functionaries at different levels in emerging fields such as participatory methods, community based organization and Micro-planning Centre for Futures Studies Carrying out interdisciplinary research Rural Energy Centre Taluk Level Biomass Assessment was carried out at Karur and Palani Taluks to evaluate the feasibility of power generation from biomass. Rural Development M.Sc Geoinformatics was initiated in - Workshop on Self Help Groups and Poverty Alleviation was organized Training on GIS to College Teachers and Scholars FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY Framed the syllabus for M.Sc., Dairy Science programme Revised the syllabus of Diploma in Agriculture Published booklet on Oilseeds and Pulses Crop Production Technology in association with KVK. Conducted a symposium on Advanced Dairy Technologies for Women Dairy farmers. Organized a National seminar on Indigenization of Indian farming: Problems and Prospects Seven Training Programmes were conducted in watershed management to disseminate the latest technologies, funded by DRDA from various Districts. Physical Education Offered a foundation course Sports and Games to first year undergraduate students besides offering them coaching in various sports and games. Innovations in curricular design and transaction General The Curricular programmes of GRU are conceived and designed bearing in mind the contemporary issues confronting the society at large, with inputs from a multitude of sections. The Programmes are designed through expert knowledge, findings of research projects, outcomes of seminars / workshops, students feedback, interaction with the community, public consultations and suggestions by development organizations. The Content of Programmes and Courses, shaped by such wide consultations, are again structured at the Board of Studies meetings and strengthened at the Academic Council meeting, before it is finally delivered to the Not contented with such a laborious but pragmatic process, the curriculum is subjected to periodic scrutiny by subject experts every three years and earlier if warranted, modified and strengthened to make it current and comprehensive with the objective of making the students employable. The specific inputs from the Faculties/departments are given below: FACULTY OF RURAL SOCIAL SCIENCES Cooperation Re-structured the curriculum for UG/PG programmes in June Economics BOS in Economics has restructured the M.Phil. Programme (Economics), which was brought under CBCS; BOS in Economics has revised the syllabi for M.A. Business Economics programme in the light of UGC model curriculum; and There are field exposure visits linking class room teaching with field realities. _ A nnual Q uality A ssurance R eport (-03) 11

15 Gandhian Thought and Peace Science There are field exposure visits bringing together classroom teaching and field realities. Political Science and Development Administration Extension activities of the students are based on PRA. Rural Industries Management The syllabus for BA (RIM) and MA (RIM) programmes has been revised in order to enhance the practical inputs given to the students in skill development. FACULTY OF RURAL ORIENTED SCIENCES Biology In M.Sc. Applied Biology programme, four elective courses for each semester were introduced separately for Plant Sciences and for Animal Sciences so as to enable the M.Sc Applied Biology Programme students be treated on par with M.Sc Botany and M.Sc Zoology students. Chemistry The existing laboratory course in Quantitative Inorganic Chemistry has been strengthened with the designing of newer experiments to suit the requirements of the pharmaceutical and other chemical industries. In quantitative Organic Chemistry practical, a few experiments on isolation of natural products have been included Physics Dr.G.Muralidharan and Dr.P.Vickraman, recorded a number of half an hour long video lectures on Basic Electronics and Electricity Magnetism at AVRC, Anna University. These lectures are part of the UGC video lecture series. Rural Technology Centre Curriculum based on local technological needs More practical content and practice-based learning Incorporating live projects for the benefit of the students Field visits and technology diffusion as part of students curriculum FACULTY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT Adult continuing Education and Extension Career counseling was started in the schools of service villages. Since July 2001, 54 women SHGs and 16 men SHGs have been formed. The groups have saved Rs which has been given as micro-credit to the members. Children s clubs have been formed in 75 villages. Extension Education Subject-based extension field visit, internship, summer placement and field exposure visit to Research and Development organizations, NGOs, Corporate offices and Govt. organizations have been undertaken. 16 Rural Development The students of the Certificate Course in Rural Banking and Micro Finance Management underwent practical training in ISRO MSSRF Centre, Sempatti. FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY Method and Result demonstration to Students on various Agriculture and Animal Husbandry practices Arranging field trips to understand the problems and suggest solutions Conducted RAWE programme to Diploma in Agriculture students during winter and summer vacation periods FACULTY OF TAMIL AND INDIAN LANGUAGES Inclusion of course in Tourism and Public Speaking Inclusion of Sanskrit Literature. Entrepreneurial training in mushroom cultivation Students were encouraged to take up internship in popular dailies. Student magazine was brought out Literary competitions were organized 4. Geo-informatics (Dept. of Rural Development) Diploma in Applied Population Research (Distance Mode) Diploma in Population and Health Science Research (Distance mode) Certificate in Micro Finance and Micro Enterprises (Add - on course) Besides these, interdisciplinary courses offered to the already existing programmes. The details are given below: Faculty of Rural Social Sciences Economics Business Communication, Advertising Management, Marketing Management, Personnel Management, Principles of Environment and Project Planning and Evaluation are the inter-disciplinary courses introduced by the department. Gandhian Thought and Peace Science B.A.Rural Reconstruction is basically inter-disciplinary in nature FACULTY OF RURAL ORIENTED SCIENCES: Chemistry The department offers Elements of Biotechnology to the students of M.Sc. Biology, M.Sc. Food Science, and Home Science. An elective course in the instrumental methods of analysis has been designed. 17 Rural Technology Centre: B.Sc. Sustainable Technology Management an inter-disciplinary programme focusing on small enterprises in civil engineering, agricultural enterprises and food processing trades is being offered. FACULTY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT Applied Research Labour Studies. Rural Development All the programmes offered by the department of Rural Development are interdisciplinary in nature. FACULTY OF TAMIL AND INDIAN LANGUAGES The following courses have been introduced: Comparative Literature Folklore and Media. 5. Examination reforms implemented The Cumulative Formative Assessment with three tests, each of its weightages as five, fifteen and twenty respectively for the UG programmes and ten, fifteen and twenty respectively for the PG programmes has been introduced. Substitution Tests for CFA have been introduced. Rules for Re-appearance and appeals for revaluation have been framed. Examination Section has been computerized. 6. 72 26. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results, issue of certificates The entire admission process is computerized using Visual Foxpro. The office automation has already been effected in various sections of the administrative office. The office of the Controller of Examination is fully automated. Publication of results and issuing of certificate have been made easy using computers. 27. Increase in the infrastructural facilities The Institute has established a Sanitation Park, a Technology Park, Soundarya Day Care Centre and an Internet Browsing centre on campus. The Silver Jubilee arch constructed at a cost of 3 lacs was declared open by Shri. R.Venkatraman, His Excellency the former President of India on The Institute came up with a centralized water distribution system with a capacity of 1 lac litres. The Multipurpose auditorium was inaugurated by the Chairman, UGC, which was built at a cost of 66 lacs. Some Departments have acquired LCD, Scanner, Digital camera for effective teaching aid. Gyanvani programmes, video conferencing and other audio-visual aids are used as effective means of teaching. Faculty of Agriculture has introduced Alley cropping system in the farms. It has also introduced animal rearing as part of its Animal Husbandry activity. Preliminary studies have been completed by Chemistry department for the commercialization of a few green corrosion inhibitors. The Biology department has developed a low cost bacteriological water testing kit. Rural Energy Centre has propagated energy conservation technologies in cooking and lighting and renewable energy technologies. Eight different labour saving farm machines such as bullock drawn seed planter, paddy threshing aid, groundnut stripper etc., were developed and farmers have been apprised of these advancements. Notwithstanding the absence of a formal, registered Parent Teacher Association, the parents interact with teachers of the Department - initially during admission of their wards - during the programme - towards the end of the programme and - after graduation of their wards They share the - educational antecedents and ambitions of their wards initially - difficulties faced by their ward and / or suggestions of parents during the study period - Employment requirements and preferences of their ward, after completion of course. A small segment of students hail from nearby rural areas where our Faculty frequent for extension programmes. Parents of these wards provide the extension team with full cooperation and support in organizing village camps, conducting surveys and other activities. 33. Health Services The Kasturiba Hospital,, with 200 beds facility, supports GRI in health care. This Hospital is part of the Parent Organization, namely, Trust. Campus interview is arranged every year for students of various streams. Corporates, IT firms, NGOs, Funding agencies, Teacher Training Institutes and Schools avail of the services of the Bureau. Certain Faculty and Departments also have separate Placement officers. On-campus and off-campus placement is arranged by the department for the final year students of MCA and M.Sc. IT. Students of M.A. (RPM) and M.A (Int.DA)were selected as young professional by CAPART, New Delhi. 39. Good practices of the Institution: GRI, being a Gandhian Institution, imparts value based education The day at begins with an inter - religious prayer The Friday prayer where the community assembles is another healthy practice The Gurukula system wherein the students are attached to a guru addresses many of the issues faced by them. The student representative elected to the senate voices the views of the student. Thus student participation in the running of the Institute is ensured. The village placement programme, the unique feature of the rural university, imparts values and social responsibilities to the students. The stakeholders response through VPP helps the institute to reshape its policies and strategies to bring about holistic change in the rural scenario. The Department of Chemistry and Physics work in close collaboration with the Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi. The faculty members serve in National / International agencies like the Planning Commission, TWAD, Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency as members / consultants. GRI with the help of CAPART, has been instrumental in building the capacity of NGO s in the field of preparation of microplan using PRA and Logical frame work analysis. The Faculty members undertake projects sponsored by UGC, CSIR, Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission and other Governmental and Non Governmental agencies.
