6 Workshop Descriptions Session Planning for College Tom McGinn, Director, Admissions & Enrollment, Anne Arundel Community College Kristin Paddack, Counseling Department Chair, George Fox Middle School This session provides information to support parents and students in thinking about options available after high school. The key is to understand interests and know the many options that help direct the decision to choose college, a tech school, a gap year, the workplace, or a combination. Information will be provided about course selection for different career paths, various career pathways, and the benefits of using Naviance, a college planning and career readiness tool. You will also learn about what Anne Arundel Community College has to offer students in terms of degrees, certificate programs, and even opportunities for students still in high school. 101 Homework Your Public Library Kt Zawodny, Outreach Librarian, Anne Arundel County Public Library You can access an incredible array of premium homework tools with your Anne Arundel County Public Library card. Online tutors, databases with full text articles, and 24-hour reference service are at your fingertips. You will learn how to use the AACPL s Homework Center, an online resource that will save time and headaches for both parents and students! 104 Magnet Programs in AACPS Terry Poisson, Director, Advanced Studies and Programs Laura Pinto, Teacher Specialist, Advanced Studies and Programs Anne Arundel County Public Schools offers many programs and schools of choice for students and their families. Come learn about our International Baccalaureate programs (IB and MYP), Science Technology Engineering Math programs (STEM), Performing & Visual Arts programs (PVA) and the Centers for Applied Technology (CAT centers). You will learn about the scope of the crisis, how it is affecting children and families in the county, what signs for parents to look for if their child is abusing opioids, and what resources are available to families. 122 A Healthy Family s Path through Teen Mental Health Issues Bridget Claxton, Andy Claxton, Reilly Claxton Dr. Charles L. Parmele, Annapolis Pediatrics An honest discussion with a teen, her family and her doctor. 123 Erin s Law: How Can I Partner with My Child s School to Keep My Child Safe from Child Sexual Abuse? Ryan Voegtlin, Director of Student Services In this experiential session, participants will understand why education about child sexual abuse in schools is important for children s safety. Preview materials being used in the schools to deliver lessons on the topic of child sexual abuse. 124 Financial Literacy for Kids of all Ages Genieve Clarke-Hillman, Educational Systems Federal Credit Union Tiffany Scales, Educational Systems Federal Credit Union This session is an invaluable guide for parents wishing to teach their children financial responsibility at any age. You ll learn how to teach them basic money management, how to develop good personal finance habits, and how to prepare for the future.

8 Workshop Descriptions Session Tips for Managing Difficult Behaviors (PreK grade 5) Angie Antoniak, LCSW-C, The Parenting Center and the BEST program, TEACH Institute, Anne Arundel Community College In this workshop, we will take on the important topic of how to manage our children s challenging behaviors such as aggression, disrespect and defiance. The goal is for families to leave this session with new strategies and ideas to try at home. This session will be geared towards young children (PreK-Elementary). 126 Helping Your Child with Math (Grades 3 5) Kristin Morrissey, Teacher Specialist, Elementary Math Kim Vermerris, Assistant Principal, Pershing Hill Elementary School Come explore and engage in mathematical hands-on activities. You will learn strategies and games to support your child. This session will focus on activities for children in grades Internet Safety: Awareness through Knowledge Sarah Kivett, Senior Manager of Employee Conduct and Performance Management The online world is one that offers countless opportunities for children. It is, however, one in which danger also lurks. Come learn about the opportunities as well as the dangers children encounter online and through social media. Become informed so you can, in turn, have appropriate conversations with your children about online activities. 208 STEM Outside of School Leann Craumer, Librarian, Anne Arundel County Public Library STEM education doesn t stop at the school doors. The public library offers STEM programming all throughout the year at all of the locations and even online! You will learn what you can do at the library and some tips and tricks for STEM activities at home.
