1 Course Syllabus for MAT122 Course Information: Title: Intermediate Algebra, section When and Where: Monday & Wednesday from 9:00 am to 10:15 am in CM463 Credit Hours: 3 credits Prerequisites: Grade of "B" or better in MAT090, or MAT091, or MAT092, or MAT093, or equivalent, or satisfactory score on district placement exam. Instructor Information: Name: Keith Worth, Office in CM409 Availability: keith.worth@sccmail.maricopa.edu Telephone: Office Hours: MW: 3:30 pm 4:30 pm, TR: 11:00 am 12:30 pm, F: by appt. only Instructional Materials: Required Text: Mathematics in Action, 3 rd Ed., A Custom Edition for, bundled with MyMathLab Instructional Software. Other supplies: A graphing calculator (a TI-83 or TI-84 is strongly recommended for this). Access to a PC and an address: You will need regular access to a PC computer in order to complete the online homework for this course. If you don t have a computer at home, your online homework can be completed using the SCC computer labs or the Math/Science Center. You will also need a working address to register online for the MyMathLab software. Course Description: Quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions and equations; graphs of quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions; equations quadratic in form; operations on rational expressions, and complex numbers; rational exponents; applications. Course Objectives: 1. Use function notation. 2. Solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. 3. Solve equations quadratic in form. 4. Solve rational and radical equations. 5. Perform operation on complex numbers. 6. Perform operations on radical and rational expressions. 7. Simplify radical and rational expressions. 8. Simplify expressions involving rational exponents. 9. Graph quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 10. Identify the domain of quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions. 11. Rewrite logarithmic expressions using properties of logarithms. 12. Evaluate formulas involving exponential and logarithmic expressions. 13. Model and solve real-world problems using quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic equations. 1

2 Course grading: Ranges: A: , B: 89-80, C: 79-70, D: 69-60, F: below 60 20% of grade: homework (done online with MyMathLab Software). 20% of grade: daily, in-class quizzes. 50% of grade: five Tests worth 10% each. 10% of grade: comprehensive Final Exam 100% of your total grade. Policy regarding missed work due to absence: Attendance & withdrawal: Regular attendance is essential. You may be withdrawn if you have two absences in a row without keeping in contact with me. If you are sick or unable to attend class, it is absolutely essential that you should let me know by phone or . Regarding your online homework: Your MyMathLab course ID is worth I have attached an instruction sheet for MyMathLab. Please refer to these instructions and the key code that comes with your new textbook s shrink-wrapped software to setup your MyMathLab account. Each week I will assign new lesson homework in MyMathLab for you to do. Regarding the daily, in-class quizzes: Each quiz must be taken on the day and at the time everyone else takes it. No makeup quiz will be allowed. Instead I will drop the lowest three scores. Regarding each of the five Tests: You can take each original test on or before the date this test is scheduled in the course calendar. The time to take the original test can be extended only until I have graded and handed back this original test to the rest of the class. If an emergency arises, you must call or me on or before the day of the test. Regarding the Final Exam: The Final Exam is also essential to your course grade and therefore must be taken by you. You must take the Final Exam on or before the date this test is scheduled in the course calendar. If an emergency arises, you must me on or before the day of the Final Exam. If you miss the Final Exam for any reason, your final course grade will automatically be lowered one letter grade. Absolutely no exceptions! If you are in section your final exam is Wednesday, May 11 from 7:30 am to 9:20 am. Academic honesty: Every student in this class is expected to produce his/her own original work. Plagiarism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism can result in being dropped from the course with a failing grade and will result in a letter to the SCC Dean for further action. 2
