2 fourth european conference on gender equality in higher education The fourth european conference on gender equality in higher education 2005 will take place in the United Kingdom, at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford. The conference is being organised by a partnership involving Oxford Brookes University, the Equality Challenge Unit, the European Network of Gender Equality in Higher Education, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. This is the fourth in a series of European conferences on this subject since Following the first Conference at the University of Helsinki, came a book entitled Hard Work in Academy: Research and Interventions on Gender Inequalities in Higher Education which included a number of selected papers from the Conference. An informal network of academics and HE practitioners from universities both in Europe and in other parts of the world was also established following this conference. The European Network of Gender Equality in Higher Education keeps in touch through an distribution list, eq-uni@helsinki.fi managed by the University of Helsinki. The network has been growing steadily and supported the organisation of the second and third European Conferences on Gender Equality in Higher Education that took place in Zurich, in 2000 and at the University of Genova, Italy in The 2005 conference will open on the afternoon of Wednesday 31 August and close at lunchtime on Saturday 3 September There will be an organised walking tour of historic Oxford on Saturday afternoon. This conference is aimed at academics, practitioners and research students There are three main themes running through the conference. These are: 1. Understanding gender and performance This involves work that explores ways in which men and women behave or perform differently (or similarly) and the ways in which women are judged differently (generally more critically) than men. This could include any aspect of the student experience (for example access, learning and teaching, curriculum development, the PhD process) or any aspect of employment (for example recruitment and promotion, different academic tasks and the way they are valued, leadership, peer review). 2. Achieving gender equality in higher education: evaluating methods This involves hearing about any methods that have been tried to give greater value to women s work (or draw attention to the advantages that men enjoy) and to achieve gender equality in terms of academic and employment outcomes. Evidence based evaluation of the success (or not) of these methods is of particular interest. 3. Academics and practitioners working together This involves bringing together the work of academics and practitioners. This could be achieved through the submission of evidencebased practitioner work, or academic papers that reflect on the practical implications of their findings. Papers written jointly by academics and practitioners are especially encouraged. If you think you will be interested in submitting some of your work to the conference, this can take three different forms: Full paper You are requested to submit a 300-word abstract for review and selection, which must be received at Oxford Brookes no later than 10 January Send by to hrnoonan@brookes.ac.uk If selected, you will be notified by 25 March 2005 and requested to send a 5000 word (max) paper for presentation. To ensure your papers are included in the Proceedings, they must be forwarded to Oxford Brookes by , to hrnoonan@brookes.ac.uk. The format used should be Arial 10 font. Absolute final date for receipt at Brookes to ensure inclusion in the Proceedings will be 9 July Your presentation should take no more than 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes discussion time. Demonstration/workshop This should be interactive. You should submit a 300-word synopsis by to hrnoonan@brookes.ac.uk for selection. To be received no later than 10 January Your submission should clearly state your aims / objectives, content, material and approach. If your proposal for a demonstration / workshop is selected, you will be notified by 25 March 2005.

3 Poster There will be dedicated time within the conference to look at posters. You are asked to submit a 200-word summary for selection clearly stating the main content you plan to display in your poster, by to hrnoonan@brookes.ac.uk by 10 January If your poster is selected, you will be notified by 25 March Keynote Speakers: Teresa Rees Professor in Social Sciences at Cardiff University. Her main research interests are in the field of education and labour market policies, especially focussing on gender. She has acted as rapporteur for the European Commission s Directorate-General for Research on a new project about women in industrial research. She also works with candidate countries preparing to meet the EU s requirements on gender equality to join the EU. Her publications include an evidence based policy report The Helsinki Group of Women and Science: National Policies on Women and Science in Europe Luxembourg: Office for Official Publications of the European Communities pp improving/women/policies.htm Pierre Bismuth Senior HR Executive, presenting on the practical management of cultural changes, with a case study on the integration of women in an international, technical company. He will lay out a road map that could be used to achieve this goal, while also addressing both the obstacles that need to be removed as well as the benefits that integration will bring to the industry. He has spent 30 years with Schlumberger, an international oilfield service company, where he was Vice President of HR for 10 years. He managed a major initiative, launched in 1994, to integrate women from all nationalities at all levels of the company. He has worked in Europe, Asia and America. Throughout his career, he has been deeply involved in making the company both diverse in its staffing and global in its policies. The initiative he managed is an example of a forceful and management driven integration of women in the world of technology and science. As a practitioner, Pierre Bismuth participates in many task forces and conferences on diversity, the global policies needed to support it, and cultural changes in international companies. He also conducts an expert group on this subject for the EU. Virginia Valian Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Linguistics at Hunter College and the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York (CUNY). She is a cognitive scientist, whose research ranges from first and second language acquisition to gender differences and gender equity. Reviewers have called Dr Valian s book, Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women, MIT Press, 1998, compelling, scholarly and convincing, accessible and lively, and a breakthrough in the discourse on gender. Harriet Bjerrum Professor in Gender Studies and Education at the University of Oslo, and Academic Director of the Centre for Women s Studies and Gender Research. She has authored several books and articles about gender in a process of change and is actively reviewing gender balance among academic staff at the University of Oslo. One of her recent publications includes a comparative study of boys and girls at scout camps in four European countries One of the boys? Doing gender in European Scouting, 2003.
