3 INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Study Abroad Participant Data Report for Academic Year Executive Summary The number of UW-Madison students studying abroad in (including Fall 08, Spring 09, and Summer 09) for UW-Madison credit on programs offered through (IAP) was 1236 students, a decrease from of 1.20%. This slight decline in participation was a result of the UW travel ban to Mexico in Summer 09 due to the H1N1 virus, as well as the effect of the economic recession. In , IAP programs again attracted a greater proportion of female (68.37%) to male (31.63%) participants compared with the UW-Madison Fall 2008 undergraduate campus ratio of 52.4% female to 47.6% male.* In , 81.88% of IAP participants were from the College of Letters and Science. The second most represented school/college was the School of Education, representing 4.69% of participants. In , 9.06% of IAP participants (112) participated in an internship, a work abroad placement in an apprenticeship capacity with working professionals in that field. 98 of these students earned academic credit for their internship experience. In , IAP offered 25 programs with an internship option as well as 1 program with a service-learning opportunity. IAP offers programs on six continents. Europe continues to be the most popular study abroad destination for UW-Madison students, attracting 55.83% of study abroad students in The second most popular region was Latin America (13.03%). IAP offers programs in 51 unique countries. In , the top five most popular study abroad countries were: Spain (149 participants), United Kingdom (98), Italy (95), China (90), and France (82). The percentage of IAP students on yearlong programs in was 9.79%. In addition, 54.61% of IAP students attended semester-long programs, 30.91% attended summer programs, and another 4.69% participated on winter intersession three-week programs. In , 12.30% of IAP participants reported being African American, Asian American, Native American, or Hispanic a significant increase from 6.20% of IAP participants in Compared to the entire campus, UW-Madison s Fall 2008 Undergraduate class percentage was 15.7% for the same ethnic groups.* In , IAP offered 124 study abroad and exchange programs, a 16.98% increase from when 106 programs were offered. The top six most popular study abroad programs were: Academic Program in Tianjin, China Summer (49); CEA Liberal Arts Program in Prague, Czech Republic Spring (41); Academic Program in London, England - Spring (39); CIEE Program in Seville, Spain - Spring (30); Academic Program in Madrid, Spain Spring (28); and Academic Program in Florence, Italy - Spring (28).
