3 PURPOSE The acquisition of the knowledge and skills a student needs to enroll and succeed in credit-bearing first-year courses at a postsecondary institution (such as a 2 or 4 year college, trade school, or technical school) without the need for remediation Our goal is to prepare ALL students to learn, grow, and succeed College & Career Readiness

4 BACKGROUND PURPOSE Providing expanded access to high quality education and related supports particularly for those young people who today lack such access will not only expand economic opportunity for those individuals, but will also likely do more to strengthen the overall state economy than anything else a state government can do. 16 BACKGROUND Teachers armed with the knowledge of children s development of an understanding of work and careers can work harder to influence work and career perceptions.

17 BACKGROUND Students need ample opportunity to explore and try a variety of different courses, programs, and activities. It s important for students to identify what they don t want to do in the future and know why they don t like something. Exercises that encourage sustained personal reflection are great ways to get to this kind of self insight. -Dr. Greta Davis

18 BACKGROUND Addressing the implications of an incomplete occupational map Purposefully and intentionally exposing students to practicing professionals in occupations traditionally dominated by one gender Aligning Enrichment Clusters with the National 16 Career Clusters using kid-friendly language Exposing students to clusters of careers versus singular options Developing an understanding of how careers in similar fields work together for a common purpose

19 BACKGROUND Transitioning from Elementary to CTE opportunities at the secondary level By Junior High, elementary students will have been ENGAGED in a variety of Enrichment Clusters with authentic methods that make connections to how the working world functions. Rising 7 th graders will have been EXPOSED to CTE opportunities and career clusters at the 6 th grade CCR event and through Naviance. Students will be EMPOWERED to enter Junior High ready to make decisions according to their individual talents & interests.

21 BACKGROUND Career and Technical Education in the Junior Highs Students are able to identify personal career interests and aptitudes, via utilization of the career guidance program Kuder Students have 20 State Approved Career and Technical Education Classes in Junior High related to career exploration with ten providing high school credit Students are able to develop a career educational plan, as well as develop generic career soft skills for successful employment

22 BACKGROUND Career and Technical Education in the High Schools High School students have the opportunity to select from 165 courses representing the 16 Federal career clusters Each cluster offers varied means of instruction through classroom, pre-employment laboratory, cooperative work experiences, and paid and non-paid internships Each cluster offers options to all students to earn license, certificate, or certification relevant to their career path

46 Dual Credit Dual Credit - This past year, Dual Credit enrollment went up to Changes in Dual Credit Offerings English 1301 and 1302 Physics US History Speech CTE Online opportunities RISD received over $40,000 from Richland College for our students enrolling in these dual credit courses, up from $24,000. We offer both stand alone courses and AP Overlay courses. AP Overlay courses are taught by RISD faculty, teaching the AP content, and students can receive college credit if they qualify through Richland College. We need more qualified teachers (Masters with 18 hours in field) at each campus.

Plus, maximize institutional effectiveness by automating transcript delivery through our electronic document delivery service, and enhancing communications with students and families through our built-in messaging and survey tools.
