2 2 Building common areas for higher education in the Americas WHAT IS THE IOHE? The Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) is the only university association actively present all across the Americas. Internationally recognized, the IOHE is a key forum for reflection and action that is composed of more than 300 higher education institutions (HEIs) and national associations, spanning the entire continent of the Americas. It is in charge of promoting its members interests, to thoroughly analyze the trends and to elaborate concrete solutions to the challenges encountered in this field. The IOHE has been the voice of its constituent members for more than 30 years. It has gained a deep understanding of the higher education sector through its close cooperation with its members and the consulting services to its partners. THE IOHE PRESENTLY REPRESENTS MORE THAN 300 MEMBER UNIVERSITIES, WHICH ENCOMPASS MORE THAN FIVE MILLIONS DECISION-MAKERS, MANAGERS, PROFESSORS, RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS. 4 4 Building common areas for higher education in the Americas THE IOHE OFFERS A RANGE OF SERVICES VIA THREE STRATEGIC PROGRAMS: INSTITUTE FOR UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP (IGLU) This program aims to support the training and development of university managers such as presidents, vice-presidents and university management team members through high-level courses and seminars. Thus, IGLU reaches higher education decision-makers and leaders. Moreover, several ministers and government officials have graduated from this IOHE program, which dedicates itself to train the next generation of academic leaders. IGLU offers a range of trainings programs, from online courses to annual conferences, in-class seminars, specialized internships and intervention projects. All these activities aim to train university management teams according to the highest standards. SINCE 1983, MORE THAN 20,000 UNIVERSITY MANAGERS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN IGLU S TRAINING COURSES. Taking part in IGLU means that you: improve your understanding of the role of the university in knowledge management and its integration in its environment; reinforce your leadership capacities and your team management abilities; master quality control methods and the strategic orientations of your institution; participate in the tutors training; establish strong partnerships with other universities affiliated to the IOHE. 8 8 Building common areas for higher education in the Americas CAMPUS PROGRAM The CAMPUS program aims to build common higher education areas. In order to do so, CAMPUS sets up academic mobility initiatives that encourage the development of research and cooperation between the universities, governments, nongovernmental organizations and higher education actors. CAMPUS is also IOHE s technological tool. It aims to create, jointly with IGLU and COLAM, common areas for higher education through Web 2.0 technological platforms; thus improving the universities training and research curriculum, and encouraging an effective knowledge management. Some of CAMPUS activities: + Area for INTERCAMPUS mobility: Encourages international online or physical mobility between the IOHE s member institutions. + Area for research in innovation and science: Stimulates the development of professors and researchers through time-shared doctoral studies, research incubators and knowledge management. + Area for social engagement, higher education spirit and values: Suggests a work agenda based on the role of the university in its environment, and on its response to challenges and to the needs of the society. CAMPUS and the IOHE offer online platforms to their member institutions: + The portal of the IOHE, The IOHE s portal offers to member universities an information exchange hub on the recent news on higher education, links to websites, list of members and courses/seminars offered, etc. Member universities can also disseminate their information on this portal. DOCUMENT_PRESENTATION_OUI_ENGLISH_FINAL.indd :46

9 Building common areas for higher education in the Americas 9 + Websites on common areas The IOHE offers to member universities online platforms on particular strategic topics, such as the cooperation and the relations between America-Europe, Canada-Brazil and Latin America-China. These websites are available on the IOHE s portal. + The library of the IOHE, Members have access to an online library where they can find and publish researches, analyses, theses, as well as any document deemed pertinent to the pursuit of the organization s and its members objectives. + Blogs, s and webinars In order to ensure an efficient interaction between the members, the IOHE and CAMPUS offer a space for dialogue via blogs, webinars and an unlimited service. Several members have acquired these tools in order to set up inter-institutional communication channels on topics such as mobility, time-shared doctorats, educative resources, etc. Any service request can be addressed to the IOHE s General Secretariat. INTERNATIONALIZATION AND COMMON AREAS: THE IOHE AT THE FOREFRONT + Conference of the Americas on International Education CAIE Among its objectives, the IOHE strives to build a common area for higher education in the Americas, taking advantage of its inter-american nature. While Europe and other regions reap the benefits of such initiatives, the IOHE aspires to assume a leading role of the construction of a common area for the Americas. DOCUMENT_PRESENTATION_OUI_ENGLISH_FINAL.indd :46

10 10 Building common areas for higher education in the Americas The IOHE is acting as Executive Secretariat for the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE) until 2014 and collaborates closely with several trilateral and national university associations to gather the academic community for this event, which is being held every 18 months. This is an essential event for all the higher education key actors. CAIE aims to be a fruitful space for inter-american dialogue on the internationalization and innovation of higher education. Through bringing together decision-makers and professionals of this field, CAIE aims to create a common area to exchange on current challenges, new paradigms, best practices and future trends. + Inter-American events The IOHE collaborates on an annual basis with its members and partners to produce six inter-american events, from forums on regional priorities to great primary international conferences. Thus, the IOHE offers to its members a unique range of networking and exchange opportunities. + University missions In order to create new partnership opportunities and to respond to the strategic needs in internationalization, the IOHE offers university missions, jointly with its network partners. These missions allow members to find and reinforce new partnerships in the Americas and beyond. + China-Latin America cooperation project As a result of the annual events and of the university missions, the IOHE and China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) adopted a resolution that aims to set up a large-scale cooperation project. The topics of university management, education, culture, innovation, science and technology, economy, law and business administration, as well as the recognition and accreditation of university degrees, are at heart of this cooperation. The IOHE works with university consortia to conduct this project. DOCUMENT_PRESENTATION_OUI_ENGLISH_FINAL.indd :46

11 Building common areas for higher education in the Americas 11 These initiatives are complementary to other current projects, such as: COLAM s Internationalization of higher education diploma Specialized internships program Working group on internationalization indicators INNOVATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION: ONE OF THE IOHE S PRIORITIES In order to support its members in achieving their objectives in terms of quality, accreditation and liaison with their environment, the IOHE encourages the establishment of mechanisms to stimulate the development of innovation within HEIs and through the following initiatives: + Create the training program Managers for innovation, which includes internships, workshops and seminars, as well as to support master s and doctoral programs. + Stimulate the establishment of inter-american networks to promote technology parks, centers of excellence and technology transfer offices. + Promote the improvement of university-industry cooperation models. IN ORDER TO TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION, THE IOHE COLLABORATES WITH VARIOUS PARTNERS FROM THE EDUCATION SECTOR, THE GOVERNMENT AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO ASSESS THE NEEDS AND PRIORITIES OF INNOVATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION.
