1 Course Code and Number Course Name Length Department Course Description EM 630 Emergency Medicine 4 Weeks Emergency Medicine Students will be assigned a shift schedule for the four week clerkship. Over the four weeks, students will work a total of 14 shifts; 13 in the Emergency Department and one as a ride along with an ambulance service. Students will have the opportunity to perform the initial evaluation of undifferentiated patients presenting for evaluation and will then present the patient to an attending or senior resident, followed by discussion of a management plan. They will actively participate in following through on the components of the management plan. Students will see from one to four patients at a time; this will vary depending on the attending. Students will have opportunities to develop their procedural skills (i.e., ABG's, NG tube and IV's). Students will attend all conferences/didactics during the clerkship and will be assigned selected readings. FM 610 Family Medicine/Outpatient 4 Weeks Family Medicine This elective clerkship offers students the opportunity for exposure to the practice of family medicine. The student will have the opportunity to perform initial patient interviews and physical examinations, assist with procedures, enhance presentation skills and learn cost effective management of patients. Students will be assigned to the Sparrow Family Medicine residency clinics in the Lansing area, working directly with the attending and family medicine resident. Students will also be assigned to spend one week with the family medicine in patient team. Student will participate in didactic activities throughout the clerkship. HM 610 Forensic Pathology 4 Weeks Human Medicine This elective offers students the opportunity to observe and participate in the medicolegal death investigations performed by staff at Sparrow Forensic Pathology which serves as the Medical Examiner s office for multiple counties in Mid-Michigan. Students will have the opportunity to participate in daily staff meetings where the death scene investigations are reviewed, to observe and participate in selected forensic autopsies, to participate in post autopsy procedures (histology review, toxicology report review, etc.), and learn to appropriately complete a death certificate. Students will also be provided with reading assignments to familiarize them with the basic concepts in death investigation, the forensic autopsy, and with various types of injuries encountered in forensic pathology. Students will be required

2 to give a brief (15 20 minute) presentation (on a forensic related topic mutually agreed upon by the student and course staff) near the end of the course. Students may have the opportunity to attend court proceedings (trials) and death scenes, as available during the rotation. HM 608 Hospice/ Palliative Medicine 4 Weeks Human Medicine Student will work with hospice and palliative care teams, will get exposure to inpatient hospice, home hospice and inpatient palliative care. The student will work with the team including physician, NP, RN and MSW. HM 610 Pathology 4 Weeks Human Medicine Anatomic and clinical pathology with emphasis on clinical-pathological correlation. Conducted at Sparrow Hospital. MED 611 Cardiology 4 Weeks Medicine Students are assigned to the Michigan State University/Sparrow Hospital cardiology service. Students will work with the MSU Cardiologist, the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute (TCI) physicians and the Cardiology Fellows. Students will round daily with an attending and/or cardiology fellow. Students will become comfortable with the management of acute and chronic cardiology problems. The student will spend time seeing both the non invasive and invasive testing. MED 622 Endocrinology & Metabolism 4 Weeks Medicine This elective offers the student an with various endocrinology conditions in the ambulatory setting. Students will also be involved in hospital consultations. Students will attend didactic sessions, Endocrinology Journal Club and weekly hospital Grand Rounds. MED 615 Gastroenterology 4 Weeks Medicine The student will encounter patients with various disorders and diseases seen by gastroenterologists. The student will be expected to evaluate, develop an assessment and propose appropriate diagnostic and management approaches for patients seen. There will be ample opportunities afforded to observe endoscopic and other gastroenterologic procedures. Attendance and participation in the scheduled experiences of the clerkship is required unless specifically excused. Student is supervised by attending gastroenterologist. They will receive endoscopic observation experience, weekly didactic education conferences, and GI Journal Club. The students will see a spectrum of gastrointestinal patients. Students will demonstrate the ability to perform a competent screening history and

3 physical examination and develop an appropriate assessment and management plan (diagnostic and therapeutic). The student will demonstrate the ability to concisely and accurately present patients to the attending gastroenterologist. Weekly didactic sessions will cover approaches to common gastrointestinal problems. The student will be able to discuss approaches to patients with: Abdominal pain, Gastrointestinal bleeding, Chronic diarrhea, Jaundice. The staff gastroenterologist will evaluate the student s ability to fulfill objectives of the clerkship experience. Appropriate and timely feedback will be provided. The student is responsible for making the evaluation available for completion. The student will be encouraged to provide verbal and written feedback regarding the educational experience. MED 609 Hematology/Oncology 4 Weeks Medicine This elective offers the student an with hematologic or oncologic disorders. Students will learn the approach to the comprehensive management of the cancer patient with multiple medical problems. Students will be responsible for taking the history and physical examination, collecting and assimilating laboratory and diagnostic study data and formulating recommendations for further diagnostic work ups and therapy. Students will spend time in the in patient and out patient settings. Students will attend appropriate conferences in the hospital during the clerkship. MED 618 Infectious Disease 4 Weeks Medicine Students are assigned to the Michigan State University Infectious Disease Group and will work up consultations and round daily with an attending and infectious disease fellow. Students will become comfortable with managing common infections seen in the inpatient setting. They will also hone their differential diagnosis skills to identify uncommon and rare infections seen in the inpatient setting. Students will attend morning report, lectures and journal club in accordance with the infectious diseases fellow conference schedule. The student will provide ongoing care for approximately 4-7 patients at any given time. Students will be expected to take one weekend call during the clerkship and present selected cases at morning report after their weekend call. Students are also expected to rotate through the Sparrow microbiology laboratory for a few hours.

4 MED 628 Internal Medicine Sub-I 4 Weeks Medicine The student will function as an intern equivalent on a general internal medicine service. Senior residents and attending physicians will supervise the students as they manage patients throughout their hospitalization. Students will attend morning report, teaching rounds and conferences in accordance with the internal medicine curriculum. The student will provide ongoing care for 2 5 patients at any given time. Students will be expected to take one call per week (until 11:00 p.m.) during the clerkship. The student will be expected to present at morning report once during the clerkship. MED 612 Nephrology 4 Weeks Medicine This elective offers the student an with common renal problems, including acute and chronic renal failure, fluid and electrolyte abnormalities, hypertension, hemodialysis, chronic hemodialysis patients and renal consultations with the attending nephrologist. MED 632 MED 626 Occupational/Environmental Medicine Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) 4 Weeks Medicine This elective clerkship offers students the opportunity for exposure to various workplaces in the community. They will accompany an industrial hygienist from Michigan OSHA to these sites. They will attend an occupational and environmental disease clinic one to two mornings per week. They will interview patients with lead poisoning, work-related asthma and silicosis and have the opportunity to review chest radiographs for pneumoconiosis and interpret pulmonary function tests.. Student will also observe one to two legal depositions. The student will select, with the guidance of the clerkship director, an agreed upon independent project. 4 Weeks Medicine This elective offers the student an opportunity to evaluate and manage rehab patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Students will typically spend two weeks on the acute inpatient rehabilitation unit at Sparrow Hospital with exposure to consults, admissions and inpatient physiatric management as well as two weeks in the PM&R outpatient clinics which include EMG, Spasticity (phenol and botulinum toxin neurolysis), medical acupuncture, and interventional pain management including fluoroscopic and ultrasound guided spine and joint injections. Students are expected to attend weekly didactic activities and to deliver a PowerPoint presentation on a pertinent rehab topic to the PM&R Residents

5 and attending faculty. NOP 617 Neurology 4 Weeks Neurology This elective offers the student an in the in patient setting. They will spend time on both the general neurology service and stroke service. Students will be responsible for one weekend of call during the clerkship. The will also attend Neurology Grand Rounds. NOP 617 Neuro Ophthalmology 4 Weeks Neurology This elective offers the student an opportunity to evaluate and manage patients in an outpatient setting. Students will be expected to attend all scheduled clinics, daily rounds and neuro-ophthalmology conference. OGR 615 Ob-Gyn Sub-I 4 Weeks OB-GYN Assist in labor delivery and in the care of gynecology patients. Attendance at resident didactic session, gynecology rounds, patient pre-rounds. Participation in prenatal and postpartum clinics and in management of obstetrical and gynecological problems. Written or oral presentation on topic agreed upon between supervising physician and student. PHD 604 Neonatology 4 Weeks Peds/Human This elective clerkship offers students the opportunity for exposure to neonatal techniques and care patterns for the sick neonate. Students are assigned to the Sparrow Hospital Neonatal Unit working with the neonatologists and neonatology fellows. Night call is usually one night in four. Students are generally assigned 3 4 patients at a time and are responsible for presenting the patients progress at daily rounds and for caring for the patient (under the supervision of the attendings and fellows) during the day. Students are encouraged to perform and scrub in on basic procedures. During the final week of the rotation, students will be responsible for giving a brief presentation on a clinical aspect of neonatology. Students are expected to attend the various teaching programs of the Division of Neonatology, including journal clubs, research seminars, and clinical reviews. PHD 607 Pediatric Hematology/Oncology 4 Weeks Peds/Human The student will spend two weeks on the inpatient and two weeks on the out patient services and participate in evaluating outpatients, rounding on the in patient hematology/oncology service, performing inpatient consultations and be responsible for 3 4 patients on the in patient service. The student will present the patients progress on daily rounds. The student will take 1 2

6 calls/week and one weekend during the rotation. The student is encouraged to assist and learn to perform bone marrow aspirations, biopsy and lumbar punctures under direct supervision. Student will attend the Grand and Sub Specialty Rounds, and the Hemophilia Comprehensive Care and the Comprehensive Hematology/Oncology clinics. Relevant reading materials will be assigned by the faculty. PHD 601 Pediatric ICU 4 Weeks Peds/Human PHD 601 Pediatric Sub-I 4 Weeks Peds/Human This elective clerkship offers students the opportunity for exposure to pediatric patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Sparrow Hospital. Students will function at the level of a sub intern on the service. Students will do the initial evaluation of new patients, complete daily follow up and complete progress notes on assigned patients. Students will attend and participate with the residents in sign out rounds. Students will be required to take night and weekend call over the four weeks. Students are generally assigned 2 3 patients at a time and are responsible for presenting the patients progress at daily rounds and for caring for the patient to the attending and residents. Students will attend conferences and be assigned readings during the clerkship. The student will function as an intern on the In Patient Pediatric Unit and will be integrated into the patient care team. They will be responsible for managing three to five patients on the Pediatric Unit and are expected to write notes on each patient daily as well as orders, discharge summaries, procedures and case presentations as appropriate. The student will be required to attend the Thursday morning Pediatric Grand Rounds, Sub Specialty Rounds as well as the resident lectures and will also attend any teaching sessions that occur on the pediatric floor. They will schedule five to seven night shifts during the one month rotation (no more than five nights in a row). The student will be required to participate in formal presentations at morning report and the subspecialty conference. One presentation (the student will need to identify which presentation) will be graded by a faculty member. PSC 609 Adult Psychiatry 4 Weeks Psychiatry A 4 week rotation exposing the student to a variety of clinical experiences including inpatient adult psychiatry, child and adult outpatient, telepsychiatry, brain injury, early schizophrenia intervention programs and

7 geriatric psychiatry. The student will meet current psychiatry residents and will participate in their didactics. A case presentation is required. PSC 610 Child Psychiatry 4 Weeks Psychiatry A 4 week rotation offering the student a variety of child experiences including outpatient therapy and psychiatric consultation clinics, residential child treatment, community mental health exposure and child psychiatry team meetings. The student will work with current child psychiatry fellows and attendings, participating in the fellowship didactics as appropriate. A case presentation is required. RAD 609 Diagnostic Radiology 4 Weeks Radiology This elective will be spent in the Michigan State University Department of Radiology. The rotation will be a combination of clinical experiences, as well as the study of educational materials. Students will be assigned to work with various radiologists over the clerkship; offering exposure to General Radiology, Mammography, MRI, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, and Fluoroscopy. The student will also spend time each week with a radiologist at Sparrow Hospital. SUR 618 Anesthesiology 4 Weeks Surgery Students will assist with sedating patients utilizing common anesthetic agents. Performing anesthetic procedures under faculty supervision.
