1 2016 Summer High School Intern Packet This packet is for students entering grades (and 2016 high school graduates) interested in volunteering as interns during the 2016 Summer Library Club at Tremont, Lane Rd or Miller Park. Interns will be selected through an application and interview process. Applications are due no later than 5 p.m. on May 1 st, Interviews for the internships will be scheduled for May 6 th through May 12 th, Qualifications: --Must be entering grades or be a high school graduate of the class of Good customer service skills and phone etiquette. --Good organizational skills, multi-tasking. --Can comfortably operate a computer. --Able to follow instructions. --Able to train and give computer/customer service instructions to middle and high school students. --Able to plan and assist with programs for multiple ages. Time Commitment: --Must be available to work 9-12 hours a week, possibly more during the first 2 weeks. (We know there may be a week when you are on vacation. We also realize school will not be out during the first week.) --Interns will be scheduled to volunteer May 23 through July 31 with additional dates discussed during interviews. --Must attend a training session for high school interns and for junior volunteers. --Unexcused absences or tardiness may result in termination of internship. --Attend and present at programs determined by location of internship. These dates will be discussed at the interview. --Plan, prepare and run the Jr. Volunteen party on August 10 from 3-4:00pm. Potential Duties: --Summer Library Club sign-up and validation. --Lead training sessions for junior volunteers. --Program assistance (help with crowd control, craft programs or other activities.) --Create book displays book bundles, teacher collections, program displays, book features/reviews, etc. --Department work such as pulling requests, looking for missing items. --Program planning. Rewards: --Explore a career in education, public relations, and sales. --Library References/Experience/Training for future jobs or college applications. --Obtain leadership experience by training peers. --Have fun sharing your love of reading and of our library with the community. -- A letter documenting the number of service hours you have completed for school service requirements. --A Certificate of Recognition for completing a summer internship at the library, and a critique/letter of recommendation if desired. 1

5 Upper Arlington Public Library Volunteer Code of Conduct Volunteer Expectations Conscientiously perform all assigned tasks to the best of their abilities. If assigned tasks are unclear, volunteers must request clarification or assistance from their department/branch supervisor. Maintain the confidentiality of library records and patron information. The UAPL specifically recognizes that its library records and patron information are confidential in nature and should only be accessed by a volunteer as it relates to the volunteer assignment. Wear a volunteer badge at all times of volunteer service. Arrive promptly. Volunteers who will be late or unable to work at an agreed upon time should contact their supervisor or the volunteer coordinator as early as possible. Notify their department/branch supervisor immediately if they are injured while volunteering, whether or not medical attention is required. Dress in clothing that is clean, neat, in good repair, appropriate for the assigned duties and in keeping with the library s public nature. Refer patrons with questions to public service desk staff. Be patient, pleasant and respectful when volunteering in the Library. Check with the department/branch supervisor of your volunteer assignment before using personal devices, i.e. ipod, mp3, DS, iphone or cell phones while volunteering as they may not be appropriate for volunteer assignment. Do not use library equipment, materials or property for personal use with the exception of resources available to the public. Do not use the library phone for personal or long distance calls except when cleared by staff, i.e. for a ride home. No campaigning, soliciting, selling, petitioning, surveying, or distribution of materials to patrons or staff. Please do not bring siblings or other children to babysit while volunteering. Do not use the library name or tax-exempt status for personal advantage. The use, sale, distribution, possession or manufacture of alcohol or illegal drugs on the premises of the Library is prohibited. Any volunteer that arrives at the library under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances will be asked to leave and may be permanently dismissed from volunteer service at the UAPL. 5
6 Volunteers may not harass library patrons, staff or other volunteers. Harassment due to an individual s race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, marital status, status as a veteran or sexual orientation will not be tolerated. This type of behavior may result in dismissal from volunteer assignment. If offered a volunteer position I agree to comply with all lawful rules, policies, standards and guidelines of the UAPL. COMMITMENT: I have read the qualifications, duties and time requirements to be a High School Intern and agree that I am qualified. If selected, I will attend a required Internship training session and will perform the duties of High School Intern to the best of my ability. I understand this is an unpaid internship.
