2 Associate of Science Degree -Concentration Tracks Lakeland Community College offers students the opportunity to earn an Associate of Science degree with areas of concentration. Along with the general education courses that are required for an associate degree, students can focus their studies along specialized tracks. Students can concentrate in biology, biology pre-medicine, chemistry, geosciences, mathematics, or physics. These tracks are designed to seamlessly transfer credits to four-year colleges and universities for completion of bachelor s degrees in the specialized fields. Tracks may differ depending on which four-year college or university a student plans to attend. So students interested in obtaining an associate degree with a concentration area at Lakeland, should make an appointment with the Counseling and Advising Center. Counselors can help students map out a plan for their education and choose the appropriate courses to meet the requirements of their chosen four-year institution. Biology Associate of Science: Biology Concentration Biology is the science that studies living organisms and their fundamental life processes. Biologists conduct research on organisms as small as bacteria or as large as entire ecosystems to gain a better understanding how life forms survive, grow and reproduce in their environments. Biological science majors take classes in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. They can specialize in a multitude of areas, including the study of animals (zoology), the study of microscopic organisms (microbiology), the study of water environments (marine biology and limnology), the study of plants (botany), to name a few. Research in the field of biology has fostered the development of new products, medicines and biofuels, more productive and disease resistant crops, and innovative processes to deal with pollutants and other concerns found in nature. 3 Biology - Pre-medicine Associate of Science: Biology - Pre-medicine Concentration Students planning to attend medical school can structure their educational track to satisfy some of the core requirements for admission. Typically, undergraduate students can choose to major in any field that interests them, and medical schools accept applicants from a variety of majors. However, most students focus at least a portion of their studies on the natural or applied sciences. s such as anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry and organic chemistry are commonly required for premed students. Most pre-med students target their coursework to best prepare them for the MCAT, which is the standardized examination to qualify for medical school and a key component of their application package. 4 Chemistry Area of Concentration: Chemistry Concentration All living and non-living things on Earth are comprised of chemical elements, either in pure form or in combinations. The science of chemistry strives to discover more about the composition, structure and properties of chemicals. Chemists study atoms, molecules and crystals to learn how they are created, react and combine. They use that knowledge to find new ways to use chemicals and to create or improve the products we need. Products such as medicines, foods, paints, plastics, cosmetics, cleansers, and automobiles have been influenced by the achievements made in the field of chemistry. In addition, chemical analysis has played an important role and lead to many discoveries in the fields of forensic, environmental and geological sciences. Most chemists work in laboratories conducting research or in factories and manufacturing. 5 Geosciences Associate of Science: Geoscience Concentration Geosciences study Earth s composition, structure and processes. The sciences examine both surface and internal structure, the atmosphere, oceans and the dynamic forces that cause alterations in the planet. Geoscientists apply the principals of math, chemistry and physics in their study as they research Earth s solid and liquid matter to gain a better understanding of the physical aspects, processes and history of the planet. They evaluate rock formations and layers, volcanic activity, and earthquakes to gather data on environmental and physical changes that have taken place over time, and look closely at fossils to learn about the various life forms that once inhabited the planet. Geoscientists provide direction on the detection and extraction of oils, gas, water and minerals from deposits found below the surface. They can also be an important source for data on seismic activity and the likelihood of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that can affect the lives of millions of people. 6 Mathematics Associate of Science: Mathematics Concentration Mathematics is the study of numbers, relationships, operations, functions, geometric shapes and measurements. Mathematics can be studied purely on its own or be applied in other scientific disciplines. With mathematics, scientists can break down complex issues into smaller models that can be analyzed, and then communicate their findings through a common language. Mathematics has propelled scientific research into new frontiers. Areas such as astrophysics; biomedical engineering; chemical sciences; civil, electronic and mechanical engineering; computer technology; economics and finance; and robotics have all seen remarkable advancements supported by mathematics. Real-world challenges, such as environmental and energy resources, weather and climate forecasting, and the investigation of disease processes have found technological support from the computational modeling offered in mathematics. 7 Physics Associate of Science: Physics Concentration Physics is a science that has contributed enormously to our understanding of the world and the universe. It s a natural science that studies matter, energy, forces and motion to gain a better understanding of the laws of nature. Physicists develop theories by studying a large array of phenomena, from miniscule sub-atomic particles to massive galaxies. This research has produced fascinating discoveries that have transformed society and helped to create inventions that are essential to our lives. Significant advancements have been made in electronics, medicine, technology, thermodynamics, and energy due to the science of physics. Most physicists work for research and development firms in laboratory settings. Some conduct basic research, seeking to increase knowledge of physics and develop theories on why nature behaves the way it does. Others teach in academic settings or work in applied research situations, inventing new products that can go directly to the market.
