StAR Proposal Title Page General Proposal Information A. Proposal Title: Acquisition of a Tabletop Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive X ray Spectrometer (SEM/EDS) B. Point Person and Contact Information: Keith A. Brunstad, Assistant Professor; keith.brunstad@oneonta.edu; X3066 C. Department(s), Unit(s): Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Biology Department D. Amount Requested: $129,850 E. Proposal Summary: This proposal requests acquisition of an SEM/EDS for use in geology and biology core classes, and student/faculty research campus wide. External funding from NSF to acquire high end instruments is currently very difficult to get at nonresearch based Universities. Most of our peer universities in New York have SEM EDS instruments. Having our own instrument in house will complement our recently upgraded X ray fluorescence (XRF) and newly acquired Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP MS), and provide opportunities for our students to learn and conduct cutting edge research. The proficiency our students gain from experience obtained operating analytical equipment of this caliber and the processing of data acquired is paramount to prospective employers and graduate schools. Existence of such a multi user analytical lab on campus with high end equipment, the students can use, should aid in recruiting high quality freshman interested in the STEM fields to join the SUNY Oneonta campus. Furthermore, this instrument directly supports the Pillars of Teaching, Learning, Scholarship and Student Engagement. Potential exists to contribute to 1) Diversity (helping recruit diverse students), 2) Community Partnerships (possible contractual use of the instrument from local business), and 3) Sustainability (reduced travel costs and related overhead).
Proposal Section I Narrative A. Proposal significance and objectives. This proposal seeks acquisition of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS) to enable course-based and student/faculty research in geology (microfossil biostratigraphy, microstructural analysis, mineral and rock chemical analysis, imaging of biologically mediated precipitation of precious metals from mine waste waters) and biology (bacteriology, parasitology, invasive species), with expected additional use in archaeology, chemistry, physics, and art. The requested instrument will facilitate laboratory experience for students and will catalyze research by faculty and students. The instrument will also be available as a resource for contractual use. For example, Dr. Brunstad currently has a contract with NYSDOT to analyze contaminant chemistry in road salt. The SEM/EDS would greatly facilitate such studies. The requested Hitachi Tabletop TM 3030 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with the Bruker Quantax 70 Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDS) is exceptionally versatile, with an intuitive user interface and operational capability in high or low vacuum modes with coated or uncoated samples. The predecessor to the tabletop model requested here, was a portable version that could be used in the field at such places as mine sites. Therefore because of the SEM s lineage, this instrument should be low maintenance, robust, and easy to use for both students and faculty. Furthermore, because of this model s developmental origin and size it can fit into existing laboratory space and requires no additional room renovations. Undergraduate students will be trained in the use of the SEM/EDS for research projects and projects in various classes (e.g., GEOL 242 Mineralogy, GEOL 314 Igneous & Metamorphic Petrology, GEOL 360 Sedimentary Geology, GEOL 330 Structural Geology, ESCI 315 Laboratory Techniques in Earth Science, BIOL 342 Invertebrate Zoology, BIOL 346 Parasitology, BIOL 555 Biological Invasions). Experience with advanced instrumentation allows young scientists to develop analytical skills, understand the limitations of instruments, and acquire a sense for the significance and value of their data. Such experiences will better prepare STEM majors for graduate school and professional employment. Pre-service teachers (e.g. AEES and AEBI majors) will conduct exciting research that they can share with K-12 students. Acquisition of the SEM/EDS will facilitate 8 initial research projects that will include undergraduates from Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Biology: 1) identification of microfossils (Fig. 1) for calibration of geologic time, and construction of a framework in which to analyze ancient sea-level and tectonic factors in the rock record (Ebert); 2) examination of microstructural fabrics and mineralogy as an extension of geologic mapping of Cape Ann, MA and associated islands (Brunstad and Sen); 3) study of bacterial precipitation of minerals Fig. 1: A 420 million year old microfossil From K. Bevington s CGP MA thesis, supervised by J. Ebert. Image from SUNY Geneseo s SEM. and precious metals (Fig. 2) from bioremediation of contaminated mine waters (Brunstad and Zalatan), 4) study of the mineral chemistry and crystal-size distribution of lavas (Brunstad), 5) Mineral and contaminant chemistry of road salts and stream sediments (Brunstad), 6) study of Fig. 2: Cluster of bacteria coated with gold particles from MacCrea s senior thesis project, supervised by K. Brunstad, image from SEM at University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
morphological species boundaries in parasites (Fig. 3) of freshwater fish and saltwater stingrays (Reyda), 7) study of invasive species of zooplankton and zebra/quagga mussel larvae (Wong) and 8) identification of microplastic pollutants (Yokota and Ebert). In addition, participation of individuals from multiple departments will foster exchange of ideas, inter-disciplinary work, and collaborations. Fig. 3: Attachment organ of a new species of tapeworm from a stingray from Borneo. Image taken by Reyda and a SUNY Oneonta student using SEM at University of Connecticut. B. Contribution to the SP2010. Acquisition of the SEM/EDS directly addresses two of the pillars of the Strategic Plan: Teaching, Learning and Scholarship and Student Engagement. In addition, the instrument holds the potential of addressing the pillars of Diversity, Community Partnership and Sustainability. Teaching, Learning and Scholarship: The SEM/EDS will be utilized extensively in courses and in faculty and student research projects. The availability of sophisticated instrumentation can impact several performance indicators in this pillar including the percentage of first time students in the highest selectivity groups (instrument can help attract STEM-interested students), the number of external grants received (improved research infrastructure makes it easier to obtain additional grants), the quality of education, student satisfaction and student involvement in research (Indicators can improve through use of the instrument in classes and research projects). Student Engagement: The SEM/EDS will enable faculty to provide experiences for students that will increase the performance indicators in level of academic challenge (New and engaging projects will be feasible in courses.), active and collaborative learning (Students can gather their own data and work together to solve problems.), student-faculty interaction (both within the context of classes and in student/faculty research) and enriching educational experiences (The instrument will enable students to obtain imagery and chemical data that are not possible without it.). All aspects serve to better engage students in their own learning. Diversity: The College makes substantial efforts to recruit students from historically underrepresented groups. Availability of the SEM/EDS will be an additional attractor for these and other students, particularly those who may choose to major in STEM disciplines, thus potentially increasing diversity in the STEM workforce. Community Partnership and Sustainability: Availability of the SEM/EDS for contractual use by NYSDOT and local tech-based industries may assist in improving employment in central New York, resulting in positive impacts on local economies and producing income that can contribute to sustainability of the campus budget. Currently, faculty and students that need to use an SEM/EDS must travel several hours to use instruments at other universities. This is costly in time and financially. Having an SEM/EDS on campus will decrease expenditures for travel to other institutions and will greatly facilitate faculty and student research, which will have a positive effect on faculty development and retention. Interesting images from the SEM can be shared in partnership with local media, thus increasing the visibility of the campus and the science literacy of the public.
C. Linkage to any of the following priorities: Experiential learning Students will be able to use imaging and elemental mapping in class and individual projects. The intuitive user interface of the SEM/EDS will enable students to master use of the instrument, thus learning is facilitated through hands-on experiences. To maintain an elevated student profile, the College must provide excellent and competitive educational experiences. Acquisition of an SEM/EDS will enable such experiences. Currently, we are possibly the only SUNY comprehensive college without a SEM. Three year ago, SUNY Oswego purchased an SEM with college funds in hope of participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative. Oswego regards this purchase as an investment, not an expenditure (The Oswegonian, October 28, 2011). It was recently brought to our attention that even Fulton-Montgomery Community College has an SEM. Technology Enhanced Learning The breadth and depth of class activities in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Biology will be increased through the state-of-the-art micro imaging capability of the SEM and the elemental analysis capabilities of the EDS. The instrument will facilitate new class activities and student projects that are simply not possible without it. The instrument will likely see use in Anthropology, Chemistry and Physics, as well and possibly Art. This instrument has the potential to technologically enhance the learning of students in six departments and eight majors (GEOL, WATR, ESCI, BIOL, ANTH, CHEM, PHYS, ART) housed in three Schools: Natural and Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities. Public/Private Partnerships Local technology firms have expressed interest in contractual use an SEM/EDS. NYSDOT has already contracted with Dr. Brunstad to analyze road salt for contaminants. This study would be easier to conduct if an SEM/EDS were available. Through fee-based use, the cost to the College for operation and maintenance will be greatly reduced and may produce additional revenue. D. Supporting Data from Assessment Process or other Evidence that Contributed to the Decision to Submit this Proposal. During the academic year, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences underwent an external evaluation of all four of its majors (GEOL, WATR, METR, ESCI). The evaluators identified the lack of a SEM/EDS as a factor limiting faculty and student research. In the evaluators words: An SEM is a critical need for a geoscience program. The program assessment of the Biology Department ( ) identified a shortage of research space as a limiting factor on student/faculty research. With a room specifically designed to house an SEM, the infrastructure is in place to increase opportunities for student and faculty research. Also because the proposed SEM-EDS does not require any lab space modifications no additional expense will be incurred. E. How the activity will be assessed, using measurable, documented outcomes The impact of the SEM/EDS on Teaching, Learning and Scholarship and Student Engagement will be assessed through documentation of the 1) number of courses in which the instrument is used, 2) number of student users in courses and individual research projects, 3) number of student presentations at Student Research Day that utilize SEM/EDS imagery and elemental data and 4) number of papers that use SEM/EDS imagery and data that are presented
by faculty and students at professional conferences and in professional journals. Impact on Diversity will be assessed via demographic data on student users. Impact on Community Partnerships will be assessed via records of contractual use and fees collected by the college. Comparing the number of faculty and student user sessions with the cost that would be incurred for travel to other institutions to provide equivalent use will assess the impact on Sustainability. F. Implementation strategy and timeline. Upon approval of this proposal, an updated quote will be solicited from Hitachi for the SEM/EDS. We hope to acquire the instruments by mid-july so that training of faculty users may take place prior to the start of fall classes. Student use in classes and research projects will commence with the Fall, 2015 semester. In June, 2016 an assessment report (Section E above.) will be submitted to the Dean of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Finance and Administration and the Associate Provost for Institutional Assessment and Effectiveness. G. Additional information, if necessary. As stated above, the SEM/EDS will facilitate collaboration among the departments in the School of Natural and Mathematical Sciences as well as with archaeologists in the School of Social Sciences and possibly artists in the School of Arts and Humanities. In addition, faculty from Hartwick College and Utica College were co-investigators on the grant proposals submitted to NSF. Acquisition of this instrument will facilitate collaboration with these and other colleges. Section II Funding Request Please complete the StAR Budget Template
