4 I found it to be very motivating to have the freedom to pursue a project in my own field of interest. The whole experience gave me a rather clear direction to pursue the academic field. I am now starting a PhD programme in sensor technology. Esther Tanumihardja (Indonesia) Alumnus 2016 Master Sensor System Engineering hanze.nl/sse During the first six months you will experiment with the technical possibilities provided by sensors. You ll spend the second half of your master s programme working at innovative health related companies or research institutes such as Philips and the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG). A Master of Science degree in 1 or 1.5 years Students who have a bachelor s degree in Advanced Sensor Applications or in Sensor Technology are guaranteed direct admittance into the one year master s programme without additional prerequisites. Graduates from other engineering, IT and science bachelor s programmes most likely need to do a special premaster s or bridging programme of six months. Curriculum: 70 ECs in one year General knowledge about sensor applications needed for any type of specialisation Linear algebra (5 ECTS): mathematics required for the next modules. Advanced data analysis (5 ECTS): integrating data coming from multiple complex sensors and to interpret this data correctly. Modelling & simulation (5 ECTS): theory and tools required to model complex systems and to analyse and represent simulated data. Data centric architectures (5 ECTS): the architectural design of sensor systems at the level of system architectures for big data applications and at the level of digital signal processing (DSP). Specialised knowledge involving sensors in the health domain Products and services in health (5 ECTS): using real cases to learn the full design process of a health related sensor system. Sensor applications in health (5 ECTS): exploration of sensor applications in biology, technology, diagnostics and application in health environments like hospitals and home care. Professional skills Professional skills (3 ECTS): learning to excel in the professional field by developing essential professional, non-technical skills. Research & ethics (5 ECTS): learning necessary research skills as well as the ability to reflect on ethical issues. Community contribution (2 ECTS): forming a network for the students to help them solve particular problems in a multidisciplinary setting. Master s thesis project (30 ECTS) A six month research project in the domain of sensor technology and health in industry, a research institute or university department, resulting in a master s thesis. 4 Master - Sensor System Engineering

5 Ten additional credits Like our bachelor s programmes, the Sensor System Engineering master is offering a challenging, but rewarding schedule to students. An additional 10 ECTS are awarded on top of the regular 60 ECTS of a one year programme. We strive for students who are passionate about technology and committed to their own personal development. We admit students who have an entrepreneurial style and who consider themselves to be world citizens. You will be expected to show creativity and the drive to discover new solutions by yourself. Naturally you will be supported by the lecturing staff, as well as experts from industry, health and applied research. Encouraging you to excel You will be involved in a high-level network with professional practitioners. We have special assignments designed for excellent students and you will be encouraged to publish your findings. Over the year you will assemble a personal showcase portfolio demonstrating your experience and achievements. We acknowledge special talent by awarding Cum Laude degrees. What do we offer? In Assen we have all the facilities you need to succeed, ranging from tools, equipment and technology to state of the art science and electronic labs. You ll find everything you need to complete projects and to work with fellow students on practical assignments. We have created a stimulating environment for your education and research by offering a community of excellence, where lecturers, students and professionals from the fields of engineering and health work together as partners in education. In this environment you have the opportunity to excel and to determine your own progress. International classroom You will be studying with students from all over the world. Our students come from Indonesia, Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Iran, Nigeria, India, Vietnam, Romania and other countries, it creates a unique warm atmosphere in the class and let you train your intercultural skills as well. Research at CENSI The institute also boasts an in-house applied research centre: CENSI (Centre of Excellence for Intelligent Sensor Innovation). CENSI provides facilities for user-inspired applied research and also offers opportunities for Master s thesis work. Master s thesis project that makes our world a better place Our students work on exciting and challenging thesis projects during the second semester. Here are some of them: use of the Kinect Sensors in Upper Extremity Rehabilitation genetics of post-nephrectomy residual renal capacity in living kidney donors development of data processing pipeline for Multidimensional Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry My research projects focus on, among other things, the effects of ageing on mobility and the prevention of falls. I expect the Sensor System Engineering master students to be well equipped to help us develop and program all kinds of useful applications for monitoring systems. To work with us they need to have high-level analytical skills as well as extensive knowledge of the latest sensor technologies. Most importantly, they must be able to work in an interdisciplinary team, learning what health professionals really need, developing innovations which will contribute to the major issues at hand in the health sector. Claudine Lamoth, university lecturer and senior researcher in Healthy Ageing at the University Medical Center Groningen 5

6 This master s programme prepares students for an international career at the interface of sensor technology, IT and applications.
