1 LAW FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME The law schools at the University of Adelaide and the Flinders University of South Australia have established a joint human rights internship programme. The Law Foundation of South Australia has given funds for four scholarships for this programme. Scholarships will be available for internships (either international or national) for 2 students at each institution. Scholarships will only be awarded for internships to be undertaken between December 2014 and December Aims of the Program: The aims of the Human Rights Internship Program (HRIP) are to: Provide students with the opportunity to add depth and context to theoretical studies in international and human rights law by being given an opportunity to undertake practical work in the human rights arena. Create links with local, national and international human rights organisations that would benefit both students and the organisations concerned. Strengthen the ties between the two law schools and the community by encouraging students to speak about their experiences at events organised by community organisations. Consolidate the relationship between the two law schools and the profession by encouraging students to report on their activities in the Law Society Bulletin and to make themselves available for seminars organised by the Law Society. Liaise with the Law Society s Human Rights Committee in order to improve the community s understanding of human rights norms and their application. Increase awareness in law students and the community about local, national and international human rights issues.

2 Available Funding: For those students wishing to undertake an international internship a scholarship valued between $3515 and $5050 will be available and for those students wishing to undertake a national internship a $1980 scholarship will be available. Guidelines: Students awarded a scholarship will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines: They will familiarise themselves with the work and philosophy of their host organisation prior to their departure. They will spend time learning about the culture of the society in which they will be working. They will treat all employees and volunteers at their host organisation with respect. They will follow the programme of work assigned to them by the host organisation and carry out all reasonable instructions given by employees of the organisation with respect to the manner in which the work will be performed. They will treat these positions as if they were full time positions. No other work, paid or volunteer, is to be undertaken during this period without the permission of a director or executive officer of the host organisation. Selection criteria: Quality of the proposal Demonstrated interest or prior experience in human rights activities whether through law or non-law Employment Extra-curricular or volunteer activities and relevant courses Academic achievement Language abilities (where applicable). Programmes for a duration of a minimum of four weeks Financial need Course Requirements Only current law students having completed one of the following courses will be eligible to apply: International Law, Human Rights Law, the International Protection of Human Rights, International Criminal Law (Flinders University), Women s Rights and International Human Rights, Jessup International Law Moot and Selected Issues in International Law. Application Process All prospective interns are required to complete an application form and attach the required proposal, resume and law school transcript. Applications are due at 2pm Friday 31st October 2014 and must be handed up to the student s Law School Office. Interviews will take place during early November and the successful candidates will be notified by mid November. Applications will be considered by the Steering Committee; this consists of two representatives of the two Law Schools and a representative from the Law Foundation of South Australia. The Committee reserves the right to eliminate any application that does not meet the course requirements stated above.

If you have not had the opportunity to demonstrate your interest in human rights, please explain what factors informed your decision to apply for this internship. Please note that you must have taken one of the following subjects to be eligible to apply for this scholarship: International Law, Human Rights, International Criminal Law (Flinders University), Women s Rights And International Human Rights (Flinders University), Jessup International Law Moot; International Humanitarian Law (Adelaide); Selected Issues In International Law. 3. Language abilities: Please list knowledge of languages beyond English, indicate your proficiency and describe whether foreign language ability will be relevant for your internship. 4. Internship Proposal (750 words maximum) Please describe your proposed internship. Kindly provide the following details: What kinds of contribution do you feel you can make to the host organization or institution? What do you hope to take away from the experience? How does the work of the host organisation relate to your particular interests as set out in Question 1 above? What issues or problems do you think your work will address? Why are these problems important? How will your work address these problems? 5. Host Organization Details Please provide the full name of the host organization, a description of its work or mandate, its mailing address, telephone number, the name of your proposed supervisor or partners and their address. 6. Letter of Support Kindly submit a letter of support for your proposal from the host organization. 7. Adelaide Students Adelaide students please note that you may only be awarded either the Dame Roma scholarship or a Law Foundation scholarship (but you are able to apply for both if you fit the eligibility criteria). 8. Scholarship Conditions Below are the conditions of the scholarship. By signing this application form you are agreeing to abide by these conditions. I will report on my internship to my University as well as the Law Foundation of South Australia. I will make myself available to participate in seminars organised by the Law Society. I agree to purchase all relevant insurance (travel and health) and to abide by travel guidelines issued by the relevant university. I acknowledge that none of the organisations, The University of Adelaide, The Flinders University of South Australia or the Law Foundation of South Australia, accept any responsibility for any injury, accident or loss that I may suffer while undertaking this internship.
