Publicatie 1.book Page 6 Friday, July 14, :17 PM The University and Faculty with the Student s Council concerning such matters as the organization of education at the UvA. Teaching and research carried out at the Faculty of Science can be divided into a number of broader scientific fields. These fields are categorized into four departments. The Chairpersons of the departments advise the Dean in matters such as educational and research policies. They have a supervisory role with regard to Human Resource Management in their own department. The chairman of the department Biology and Physical Geography is prof. dr. M. Joëls Student participation Students and lecturers each have their own councils at the UvA. Student participation in the organization and management of education takes place at three levels, namely in the Programme Committees, the Faculty Student Council and the Central Student Council. The programme committees Each group of MSc programmes in a particular field has its own programme committee, which gives advice with regard to the educational programme. The programme committee consists of both students and lecturers. For more information about the programme committees for Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Life Sciences, see for Earth Sciences part 2, subsection and for Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Life Sciences part 3, subsection in this course catalogue. Faculty Student Council (Facultaire Studenten Raad, FSR) In the faculty of science, the FSR advises the Board of the Faculty and consults with the Dean every three weeks. At present, the FSR is keeping an eye on the Faculty s massive development plans for the Watergraafsmeer and, where necessary, draws attention to bottlenecks in teaching. You may also approach the FSR for problems encountered during your studies and they will help you find a solution. The FSR consists of twelve students from the various programmes in the Faculty. They are chosen democratically in an annual election. Students can put themselves up for election. More information about the Faculty Student Council can be found at Contact by studentenraad@science.uva.nl, or telephone: Central Student Council (Centrale Studenten Raad, CSR) The CSR is the highest council for students within the UvA. Its fourteen members are chosen annually by the almost students who are registered at the UvA. The aim is to have two students from each Faculty to be chosen for the Council. The CSR represents the students in consultations with the board of governors of the UvA. It has two important rights: its approval is required for many decisions, and it has the right to present uninvited as well as invited advice. Information about the Central Student Council can be found at 6

Publicatie 1.book Page 11 Friday, July 14, :17 PM General Study Matters 2 General Study Matters The School of Life and Earth Sciences trains students to carry out independent scientific research. They learn to work with existing scientific knowledge and to apply this to a variety of areas, both existing and new, whereby they learn to acquire new knowledge. The school actively stimulates interdisciplinary collaboration in scientific development; teaches students to develop skills, knowledge and insight in these fields; offers education which is, by international standards, of a high quality; offers students the opportunity to choose a specialization profile in Research, in Science, Technology & Public Management, or in Communication and Education. It enables students spend part of their study abroad and offers practicable study programmes in an inspiring academic environment and to a demanding and heterogeneous student population. The School of Life and Earth Sciences offers programmes which lead to an MSc degree in one of four fields, namely: 1. MSc in Earth Sciences 2. MSc in Biological Sciences 3. MSc in Biomedical Sciences 4. MSc in Life Sciences In the following sections the various MSc programmes offered in the four fields are described, and the specialization profiles which can be followed for each programme are stated: R (research profile) ST&PM (Science, Technology & Public Management profile) CE (Communication and Education profile) Generalinformation General information The three specialization profiles are described extensively below. 2.1 Specialisation profiles in the MSc programmes Research profile (R profile) The main focus in this profile is on scientific research. The programme is aimed at students who wish to extend their knowledge and skills in carrying out scientific research; the programme is especially adapted to this goal Science, Technology and Public Management profile (ST&PM profile) Introduction: The complexity of our modern world requires highly educated professionals, who are able to see beyond the boundaries of their own scientific discipline. The Master's degree in 11

Publicatie 1.book Page 12 Friday, July 14, :17 PM General Study Matters Science, Technology and Public Management (ST&PM) was developed for students who are fascinated by the sciences, but also want to learn more about fields in which science is implemented and about societal problems that are connected with science and technology. By making students acquainted with e.g. organization, management, public/social administration, law & legislation and scientific journalism, the ST&PM profile prepares science students for the rapidly developing hi-tech world. The ST&PM profile may be chosen in the following MSc programmes: Masterprogramme Earth Sciences Masterprogramme General Biology Masterprogramme Limnology and Oceanography Ecology and Evolution- Specialisation tracks: Spatial Ecology and Systematic and Evolutionary Biology Masterprogramme Medical Biology Masterprogramme Molecular Cell Biology and Bioinformatics The ST&PM theoretical course may also be taken as an optional course within any of the MSc programmes. This ST&PM course is taught in the Dutch language. Programme The first year of the master's programme consists of courses and traineeships within your own discipline. The scientific theory and research methods of your discipline are required for the second year, the ST&PM year, which consists of the following components: Course (14 weeks, 20 EC*) Extended essay/intensifying course (7 weeks, 10 EC) Research project/traineeship (21 weeks, 30 EC) *20 EC: see subsection Educational Matters for definition of EC. Course ( 300 Science, Technology and Public Management (pag. 203) (20 EC).) The course is organized according to the principles of problem-based-learning (PBL). This means that you will be challenged to research possible solutions to a societal problem in an interdisciplinary team. During the course support training and theories are offered by (guest)lecturers. The end product of the course is a policy report, which will be professionally presented at a symposium. Examples of policy report subjects: Water management Biodiversity, Genetic Modified Organisms Patenting of human genes Transplantation medicine Extended essay After you have followed the ST&PM course you can write an extended essay or follow an 12

Publicatie 1.book Page 13 Friday, July 14, :17 PM General Study Matters intensifying course. The subject depends on your own interest and courses in another discipline may be followed. Research project/traineeship The aim of the research project is to get acquainted with the academic world and with interdisciplinary research. It offers you the opportunity to put your newly learned skills into practice. Student requirements Students should have a bachelor s degree in (Medical) Biology, Environmental Sciences, Physical Geography, Physics, Mathematics or Earth Sciences. For participation or information, contact the coordinator/lecturer. Admission can only take place after an interview. Contacts Coordinator: dr. Amâde M charek Lecturers: Drs. M. Kohinor, Drs. H. Bergman Phone: / stpm@science.uva.nl Address: Oudezijds Achterburgwal 237, 1012 DL Amsterdam More information: Forensic Science (F-profile) Introduction: Forensic research is an increasingly important way of furnishing evidence for criminal court cases, and the technology involved is becoming increasingly advanced. There is research in different areas; chemical investigations (bits of paint, tyre tracks), medical and biological investigations (hair, DNA, toxicology results) and the analysis of digital data such as s or photographs. In this research, there is a growing need for scientists who can combine know-how in the fields of chemistry, biology, computer science or statistics with knowledge in the fields of criminology and law. The Forensic Science study programme trains students to be innovative researchers or policy-makers who contribute to the development of forensic science. The programme at the UvA is given in conjunction with the Netherlands Forensic Institute. Programme One-year programme Students who are already enrolled in a master's programme at the Faculty of Science and have chosen the Science Technology & Public Management variant of their master s programme, can start with the one-year programme in Forensic Science in September. This one-year programme is part of one of the two-year master's programmes of the Faculty of Science. The first year of the master s programme consists of a branch-specific research General information 13

Publicatie 1.book Page 14 Friday, July 14, :17 PM General Study Matters part. The second year is completely devoted to Forensic Science. The MSc in Forensic Science is strongly embedded in the student s own discipline. Within the one-year programme, 20 EC are spent on a branch-specific internship at an agency where forensic research plays a role. Besides this internship, there is of course a joint programme consisting of selected courses. The courses are mainly based on issues from the professional work field in close cooperation with forensic experts. For more information on courses, see the course description: FS Forensic Science (pag. 258) (40 EC) Two-year master s programme The curriculum of the MSc in Forensic Science is still being developed. Most courses of the one-year programme will also be taught in the two-year MSc programme. In the twoyear programme, there will be a longer work placement and a four-month course integrating the knowledge of the first year with topical and complex issues of forensic science. The admission criterium for the two-year master s programme will be a bachelor's degree in Science. Student requirements Students should have a bachelor s degree in (Medical) Biology, Environmental Sciences, Physical Geography, Physics, Mathematics, Information Sciences, Chemistry or Earth Sciences. For participation or information, contact the coordinator/lecturer. Admission can only take place after an interview. Contacts Coordinator: dr.

Men verkrijgt de titel Master of Science Teaching Biology.

Voor een stageplek wordt eigen initiatief verwacht Specific learning outcomes for the different profiles Specific learning outcomesof the Research profile The graduate will be able to: form an opinion with regard to the development of scientific research within their field; formulate hypotheses on the front lines of scientific research; translate scientific hypotheses into research proposals; make qualitative and quantitative analyses of patterns and processes, classify the resulting data into existing models or develop new models, and present the output using various levels of abstraction; set up and carry out experiments and measurements independently. Specific learning outcomes for the Science, Technology & Public Management profile The graduate will be able to: 18

Publicatie 1.book Page 19 Friday, July 14, :17 PM General Study Matters form an opinion with regard to the possible contributions that physical geography, biology and medical biology can make to solving societal problems related to their field; distil a scientific hypothesis from this opinion, aimed at solving the problem in question; implement hypotheses in strategic research; interpret and present data obtained from the analysis of patterns and processes using various levels of abstraction; collaborate in a multidisciplinary project team. General information Specific learning outcomes for the Communication and Education profile The Communication and Education profile distinguishes four components, corresponding to those stated by the VSNU as a first grade teaching qualification in their General Outline for the University Teacher Training Programme, namely: a scholarly mentality an interest in knowledge outside their own field a professional and inquisitive frame of mind, geared towards innovation a pedagogical mentality and a feeling for social welfare; At the end of the programme, students who have followed the Communication and Education profile will be able and willing to: use their specialist knowledge of educational and communicative techniques adequately in their future profession; work independently in an educational and communicative position; convey knowledge of their field to colleagues and people working outside their field; promote internal and external communication; carry out research and development tasks, both individually and as member of a team; make sure that their own professional activities are up to date on all fronts. If the student aims to qualify with a first grade teaching qualification, the learning outcomes will be adjusted accordingly. Particular attention will be paid to the following points: independent teaching in class and promoting the pupils ability to learn; participation in forms of consultation both within and outside the school; communication with pupils; helping pupils to learn and creating a good learning environment. During the post-graduate part of the programme, the graduate will need to achieve a higher level of proficiency with regard to these points in order to obtain a first level teaching qualification. 19

Publicatie 1.book Page 20 Friday, July 14, :17 PM General Study Matters 2.2 Educational Matters Credits, workload and length of a course When programming university studies, a standard workload is adopted, which refers to the time required by an average student to follow a course, or to complete (part of) a particular programme. The workload is expressed in credits. The number of credits which can be obtained for courses, traineeships, research projects etc. are expressed in EC ( European Credits), which are used internationally and which are transferable. One EC is equal to a workload of 28 hours. One academic year comprises 60 EC. The doctoraalfase or MSc programme both have a workload of 120 EC. In this course catalogue all references to credits refer to EC Study results Examination results can be viewed on Studieweb: A pass sheet or evaluation form is issued for individually completed courses such as a colloquium or thesis, research practicals, traineeships, oral examinations, etc. The form will be send to the Education Office by the examiner. Additionally, all students automatically receive a message at their student address when study results are processed in ISIS, the student administration system. This message will also be sent as a text message to those students who have given their GSM telephone number. Furthermore, at two times during the academic year students will receive print-outs of their study results. They may request an interim listing of their results via the Education Office Period of validity of grades Grades for courses, research projects and papers in the MSc programme remain valid for four years. Please note that students who follow the doctoraal program have to finish off their program before the end of the academic year , so they can graduate within this year Evaluation of teaching In order to guarantee the quality of the education provided, Programme Committees evaluate each MSc course. A periodic evaluation is also made of each completed MSc programme. The outcome of this evaluation is discussed in the relevant Programme Committee and, if necessary, the committee will advise the Education director to take action. 20

Publicatie 1.book Page 21 Friday, July 14, :17 PM General Study Matters Students who encounter problems during their research project are requested to contact the academic counsellor as soon as possible. Evaluation of final research projects takes place when the student applies for graduation. General information Change of address It is important that you inform the UvA Student Administration of a change of address as soon as possible: Studenten Services (StS) Binnengasthuisstraat ZA Amsterdam Telephone: You may also alter your address yourself via Studieweb ( Any alterations you make will be received automatically by the Student Services. If you are a member of a committee, inform them independently of your change of address. Also, do not forget to inform the IBG ( Informatie Beheer Groep) Temporary break in your study / re-registration after temporary break If you plan to break off your studies temporarily, you should inform both your own Education Office and Student Services, Binnengasthuisstraat 9, 1012 ZA Amsterdam, telephone: To arrange such a break you should make an appointment with a Academic Counsellor (see also the Student Handbook, Students who wish to resume their studies after a break can obtain re-registration forms from the Service and Information Centre (Student Services, telephone: ). Students have to ask permission of the academic counselor first Stopping your study Registration may be terminated on graduation. Illness or exceptional personal circumstances also form grounds for termination, as do other valid reasons recognized by the Board of Governors and included in the Registration Act of the UvA. Students who terminate their studies permanently should inform both their Education Office as well as Student Services of this fact. For restitution of fee it is necessary to make an appointment with a Academic Counsellor. For possibilities see Testimonial On request, the Board of Examiners will provide a testimonial to students who terminate their studies prematurely, stating all passed courses. 21
