1 ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY School of Applied Technology Spring 2018 ITM Undergraduate Advising Notes General Advising Information Spring student registration access will be activated according to your current standing and the following schedule: 1. Mon, Nov 6, 8:30am: All graduate students, U5 (fifth-year) undergraduates having more than 131 earned hours, and U4 (fourth-year) undergraduates having 90 or more earned hours 2. Tues, Nov 7, 8:30am: All U3 (third-year) undergrads having 60 or more earned hours 3. Wed, Nov 8, 8:30am: All U2 (second-year) undergrads having 30 or more earned hours 4. Thurs, Nov 9, 8:30am: All U1 (first-year) undergrads having less than 30 earned hours, exchange, visiting, and nondegree students Students with disabilities, varsity athletes and ROTC students should be able to register 8:30am on Friday, November 3. A student s U# classification is based on earned hours at 30 hours per level, which does not include classes taken in the Fall 2016 semester. Your adviser has not received your new alternate PIN yet. You do NOT need your new Alternate PIN to view the schedule for the new semester, only to drop/add classes. If you wait until January for advising and registration, your available course selections will be very limited, so please do this now! Spring 2018 class schedules were available starting Monday October 23. You can view the class schedule either in the MyIIT Academics tab or in the quick links on you can also use the secret faculty version of the schedule at just select your subjects from the drop-down box on the right. In order to see ALL ITM courses using MyIIT drop-down menus, you must hold down your CTRL key and select ITM (Information Tech and Mgmt), ITM (ITM Development), ITM (ITM Management), ITM (ITM Operations), ITM (ITM Security), ITM (ITM Theory and Technology) and TECH (Technology). Or you can just look at the last four pages of this document. For Professor Trygstad s Advisees: I prefer to see all of my students for advising in person, so please try to come and see me during the advising period. I will not issue you your PIN for registration without some sort of advising, so if you have not at least had a conversation with me with me by telephone, or carrier pigeon about the courses you would like to take, do not expect me to give you your PIN. Well, OK, probably not by carrier pigeon. Professor Trygstad will be available for advising at the Mies Campus Tuesday through Friday. Advising appointments are available Tuesday through Thursday. Students may come for advising on a walk-in basis (no appointment) during office hours 3-5pm Thursdays and on Fridays after 1pm. Professor Trygstad will be out of town at a conference November 6-9 so please plan accordingly. Professor Trygstad will be available by appointment and during office hours at the Rice Campus on Mondays except November 6. You may schedule an appointment with me at but please ensure you are there at or before your scheduled time to be fair to your fellow students. You cannot make an appointment during my scheduled office hours or on Friday afternoons; just drop in. As a reminder my Mies Campus office is Perlstein 223E and my Rice Campus office is room 227. If there are any changes to my schedule they will be reflected in my calendar at so you may want to check there before you come see me. Evening advising is unlikely but can only be arranged by appointment via . For Professor Hajek s Advisees: Professor Hajek is available for advising on the Mies Campus Tuesdays and Thursdays Noon-3pm, and varying times on Fridays as well. Contact him directly about Rice Campus advising. You can make an appointment with him at at Please make an appointment. ALERT! MATH for all ITM Undergrads First-year students may register for MATH 180, Fundamentals of Discrete Math. Any student who previously attempted MATH 230 and withdrew should register for MATH 180 as well. If you have previously failed MATH 230 and desire to replace the grade, you must retake MATH 230; this course cannot be used for grade replacement. Students who have completed Discrete Math may register for BUS 221, Analytics for Informed Decision Making, or MATH 425, Statistical Methods, which are only offered in the Spring (You may also take PSYC 203 which is offered every term). BUS 221 requires a departmental permit from the Director of the Undergraduate Business program, Prof. John Twombley (twombley@iit.edu). He will probably not issue any permits until he is sure that all business students who need the class have registered. ITM First-Year Advising First-year students need to take a Natural Science or Engineering elective. Remember that two courses in Natural Science or Engineering must be in the same subject area. In this area we strongly recommend EG 225 Engineering Graphics for Non- Engineers. The instructor, Jim Novak, has written the most widely-used textbooks in the field. Registering for EG 225 requires a permit from Jim Novak; you must him at novak@iit.edu to request the permit and ensure that you include your CWID (A#). Once he has all the students registered, he munges everyones schedules together and determines when the class will meet. First-year students should also take a lower social or behavioral science elective. Remember that you must take 9 hours of lower-level social or behavioral science and humanities (100/200) but it can be two humanities and one social or behavioral science or two social or behavioral science and one humanities course. Some upper level Social Science courses require completion of a prerequisite in the same area so it may be best to take two lower-level social science classes in different areas and only one lower level humanities course. If you did not take it in the Fall term, first-year students should take a 100/200- level humanities elective, i.e. HUM 20X, or take a lower social or behavioral science elective. Also, for first-year students we who have not taken them, strongly recommend: ITM Introduction to Operating Systems and Hardware I: Equivalent to CompTIA A+. 2 ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY School of Applied Technology Spring 2018 ITM Undergraduate Advising Notes ITM Current Sophomore Advising Sophomores (U-2) students who entered the program as first-year students need to start thinking about a minor, as completion of a minor is required in your ITM program. It can be anything you want I do think it would be amazing to see someone in IT minor in philosophy or music but you really need to start thinking about this. An interesting new minor with a strong relationship to ITM is Digital Humanities. Remember also that you may need BUS 221, Analytics for Informed Decision Making, or MATH 425, Statistical Methods, which are only offered offered in the Spring term so you should grab one. ITM Current Junior Advising Junior (U-3) students who entered the program as first-year students should be two or three courses into your minor since completion of a minor is required in your ITM program. If you are not, we seriously need to talk. ITM Current Senior Advising ITMT 430 System Integration, the senior capstone course, is only offered in the spring term. If you entered in Fall 2014 or later and are planning to graduate this spring, you must have this course. The class, taught by Professor Jeremy Hajek, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00am-11:40am in TS Humanities General Education Elective Selection Here are Professor Trygstad s recommendations for Upper-Level Humanities General Education electives for Fall 2017 with my reasons. We can t promise a course will be good; we re just trying to highlight the courses we believe would be of the most interest to ITM students. There are a fair number of courses we think will interest you this term, and there are several early evening and evening humanities courses offered, so if you work full-time, grab em while you can! All courses are at Mies Campus, and most sections have 22 seats. All course data follows the format (- indicates no room is assigned yet): CRN/Course Number-Section/Days-Time/# of Seats/Campus Bldg-Room/Instructor Persuasion: Interesting topic by a great instructor /COM /Tues-Thurs 3:15pm-4:30pm/20/Mies -/Greg Pulliam Communication Law and Ethics: Related to our industry, probably a good complement to ITMM /COM /Mon-Wed 11:25am-12:40pm/Mies -/Anna Scott Digital Media & Citizenship: Looks interesting and very relevent /COM /Mon-Wed 1:50pm-3:05pm/15/Mies -/Mohamed El Marzouki The Rise of the Global Economy: Great topic taught by a faculty member well respected by ITM students /HIST /Mon-Wed 8:30am-9:50am/22/Mies -/Val Martin History of Chicago: Interesting topic by an expert in Chicago history. Jack Snapper is probably the best teacher at IIT and this class will fill up very quickly; this course is our NUMBER ONE PICK. Jack will make you think but I think that making IT people think is a good thing. 3 ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY School of Applied Technology Spring 2018 ITM Undergraduate Advising Notes Science Fiction in Film: Not sure why this is SSCI and not LIT, but hey, the title is promising; convenient evening time /SSCI /Thu 6:25pm-9:05pm/27/Mies -/Christopher Deis We have not listed it, but you may notice that there is an online Social Science elective in the fall term, ECON 423 Economic Analysis of Capital Investments; we do not recommend this class either live or online, despite the extreme scarcity of online general education electives. This is because experience has shown that if you take ECON 423 and four other classes, ECON 423 will be as much work as your other four classes combined. I like John Twombley, who teaches this course and you probably will too but his expectations are extremely high. If you really need to do a social science elective online AND you are not afraid of hard work, then GO FOR IT. You will learn a lot in the course and some ITM students who went in with a full awareness of the workload have told us this was their favorite course of the term. And remember: your adviser must enter a departmental permit for undergrads to register for any online courses. Time/day for this class is not listed because the instructor, Jim Novak, gathers up the schedules of all of the students who have enrolled and determines a time for the class to meet that will work for everyone. To register for this course, Jim Novak at novak@iit.edu and request a permit to register for EG 225 and ensure you include your student ID number (A#) /EG /-/33/Mies TBA/James Novak If you are following the EG sequence for your Natural Science/Engineering requirements, you should note that EG 325, EG 425, EG 429, and EG 430 are all also offered this term. Spring 2018 IIT Core Curriculum Elective Listing and Spring 2018 ITM Course Listing We have included a complete list of what we view as all the applicable General Education courses for the Spring so you don t have to track them all down yourself. We ve also included a quick-reference of all ITM undergraduate courses for the Spring. ITM (C) Course Elective Selection As you are pondering your choice of ITM electives, just a reminder: IIT s general education requirements say that you have to take 12 hours of (C) coded courses in your major. These are courses with a significant written and oral communication component. Everyone will do three (C) coded courses (9 hours) as part of the ITM required courses, but this leaves 3 hours or one course that must be (C) coded ITM electives. There are a few (C) coded elective courses in the undergraduate curriculum, and we are offering one at the Main Campus spring term; it s available online as well. All course data follows the format: CRN/Course Number/Days-Time/# of Seats/Bldg-Room/Instructor Legal and Ethical Issues in Information Technology covers topics ripped from the pages of today s headlines as we examine the legal environment in which IT professionals work, and the moral and ethical issues both professionals and this industry face now and in the coming years /ITMM /Tues-Thurs 1:50-3:05pm/15/Mies -/Ray Trygstad 26666/ITMM /12/Internet/-/Ray Trygstad You need to make sure you get one of these courses in your program of study, and this is a good opportunity to pick up one up.
