9 Trinity Clubs and Societies Sports Centre and Societies Membership to the Sports Centre is included in your registration. All registered students with a current Trinity ID card will have full access to the state-ofthe-art Sports Centre. You will need to call to the reception desk on your first visit to activate your ID card, and then you can come and go as you please. You will have free access to the Fitness Theatre, which has a full range of cardiovascular and weights stations. The 25m Swimming Pool has an adjustable floor and disabled hoist. Also available are the 11m-high Climbing Wall, Aerobics Fitness and Cycling Studios, Mind and Body Studio, changing rooms, Ancillary Hall for Martial Arts and Main Hall for a variety of indoor sports. There is a nominal fee for some services such as fitness classes. Off campus there are extensive playing fields at Santry and the Trinity Boat Club has its boathouse on the River Liffey at Islandbridge. Trinity has over 200 societies, sports clubs and publications. 10 Student Support Services Monday - Friday, with some weekend openings. With the Student 2 Student peer mentoring service, the Global Room hosts New 2 Dublin on Monday evenings, weekly sessions for anyone new to the city with questions large and small, from making friends to finding the cheapest groceries. The Global Room is located beside the Academic Registry in the Watts Building. If you have any questions, please tcdglobalroom@tcd.ie. Academic Registry The Academic Registry (AR) provides central academic administrative services for the university. Issues relating to fees & payment, record management, student cards and letters for GNIB can be addressed with AR. Many queries can be logged online via your student portal. AR also operate a service desk. For details please visit their website. Health Centre The Health Centre is located in a modern, purpose built premises situated on Trinity Campus in House 47, a residential block adjacent to the rugby pitch. Please see the website for opening hours and services. 10 Student Counselling A counselling service is available to support all registered Trinity students who are experiencing personal or academic concerns. Global Room It is staffed by student ambassadors who can help you navigate Trinity, Dublin and beyond. Many are international students or have lived abroad and all of them are available to chat when you drop into the room. With over 300 international television channels, you can relax and catch up on the news from home. During term, the room is open from 9.30am to 9.00pm IT Services IT Services is the central provider of computing facilities and services to students and staff of Trinity College Dublin. Their website contains comprehensive information e.g. information for new students; college computer rooms; services etc. Once you have registered and received your Trinity College student ID card, you will have access to the computer facilities, including a personal account.

11 LIBRARy The Library s history dates back to the establishment of the College in 1592 and it is the largest library in Ireland. Today it has over 6 million printed volumes with extensive collections of journals and online databases. CAREERs services postgraduate. Trinity Business School has a dedicated Career Development team to help students to realise their full potential. Throughout the year you will be invited to a range of workshops, employer presentations and one to one meetings with career development officers. Activities include psychometric testing, meeting potential employers, exploring career options and practicing interview skills whilst having access to Cv presentation workshops, the assessment centre and general career guidance. Additionally, the University Careers Advisory Service is also here to facilitate students and recent graduates of the College in making and implementing informed decisions about their future career. Vacancies, presentations and seminar listings are posted regularly. TCD Student Union The Students Union is run for students by students. The Students Union website can be a great resource for Trinity students, with information on accommodation and grinds as well as support services. Graduate Students Union The Graduate Students Union (GSU) is an independent body which represents postgraduate students in Trinity College, Dublin. All graduate students automatically become members of the Union upon registering with the College. The GSU is located on the 2nd floor of House 6 in Front Square. Call or president@gsu.tcd.ie. 13 Living in Dublin Dublin is a thriving capital city and one of the most dynamic technology and business hubs in Europe. Global finance, tech, pharmaceutical multinationals and the energetic start-ups of Silicon Docks are only minutes away from Trinity College. Location Dublin is situated in east-central Ireland, with wonderful mountains to the south and a stunning coastline to explore. Many low cost airlines connect Dublin to hundreds of European destinations, all on a student budget. Jet to Paris or London in under an hour. Dublin has a great literary legacy with many luminaries of Irish literature such as Joyce, Shaw, Yeats, Wilde, Kavanagh and Beckett, being associated with the city. Dublin s entertainments are legendary, from the delights of the Guinness Storehouse and Temple Bar to more cultured nights at the theatre or dining in one of the city s fine eateries. Known for its welcoming and friendly culture, it s no surprise that people from all over the world come to enjoy the craic in Dublin. Dublin is relatively small in size and a great walking city. You can stroll from Trinity College to the famous St. Stephen s Green in less than 15 minutes

14 Getting Around Dublin A handy hint if you are trying to locate an address, postal codes are always odd numbers on the northside and even numbers on the Southside. As a rule of thumb, the higher the number, the further away the location will be from the city centre. The most common transport links for students are the bus, train and tram. All main transport links navigating to the city centre will bring you to Trinity college or within a short walking distance with the Luas (tram network), opening a Trinity stop from December Travel Discounts Students are entitled to reduced fares on buses, trams and trains under certain circumstances. The student travel card costs 12 and can be obtained from the Student Travel Service office in House 6, Front Square. The Irish Student Travelcard and its Northern Ireland equivalent the Translink student discount card are accepted on both sides of the border for discounted student travel. Leap Card The Leap Student Travel Card can be used by students as an ID to buy special student travel tickets as well as to pay-as-you-go for travel in the Dublin area by topping up with travel credit and using it like a Leap Card. Student Leap Card holders are entitled to some retail and entertainment discounts around Ireland. 14

15 Bus The vast majority of bus services are provided by Dublin Bus. Virtually all buses which serve the city centre either pass by Trinity or come within 10 minutes walk. Train Train services are provided by Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail. Commuter services are provided in Dublin, Cork and Limerick and a reasonably high frequency electric service known as DART, is provided on the main route through Dublin City, which by chance cuts through the rear of the Trinity Campus. Dublin Pearse Station is the closest to the Business School. Tram There are two lines, the Red Line from Tallaght to The Point (docklands in Dublin 1) and the Green line, which runs from St Stephen s Green West at the top of Grafton Street to Brides Glen via Dundrum. Tickets are sold at the tram stops. You must have a valid ticket before you get on the tram. Bicycle Dublinbikes is a self-service bike rental system open to everyone from 14 years of age. With 98 stations open with 1,500 bikes in circulation, it enables you to travel through the city centre, commute between home and work and to get out and about to enjoy Dublin city at your leisure. 15

17 Information for International Students Visas and Immigration All non-eu citizens will require a study visa. Citizens from some countries require a visa to enter Ireland (pre-arrival visa). This varies depending on your citizenship so it is important that you contact the nearest Irish Diplomatic Mission in your home country to establish whether or not you require an entry visa. You may check online at: Irish%20Visa%20Information. Please see the Department of Foreign Affairs website to find your nearest Irish Embassy: Arrival EU students Citizens from EU/EEA and Switzerland do not need to register with the immigration authorities. Non EU students If you do not need a pre-arrival visa (as above), you should have certain documents to show the immigration officer at the point of entry into the country: Your passport Your Trinity College acceptance letter Bank statement showing means to support your stay Proof of health insurance If your documents are in order you will receive a passport stamp indicating the time period during which you should visit the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB), in Dublin to receive your permission to stay and registration certificate. GNIB Card All non-irish nationals (who are not citizens of the EU/EEA or Switzerland) must register in person with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB), after arrival and after completion of registration at TCD. The GNIB will issue you with a residence permit/ GNIB card. The fee for this card is 300 and must be paid by credit card, laser card or bank giro. Please check with your insurance company at home to see if you are sufficiently insured for your period of study in Ireland. 18 Registration & Tuition Fees registration You will receive an invitation to register through your My TCD portal in August and you will need to complete the online registration process prior to arrival. On completion of online registration, your TCD address, computer ID (username), and password will be provided via the Intray message in the portal. Your ID card will be issued to you during Freshers Week as part of the Orientation schedule. It is recommended that you check your TCD account regularly for College official communications. Lecture timetables will be available via the student information portal near term time. Fees and Payment Log-in to MyTCD portal to view the balance of your fees. The Academic Registry is responsible for the invoicing and collection of course fees and other charges. They will also issue several of the documents you will need to register with the immigration bureau and open a bank account (if required). The best way to request documents is to call into the Service Desk during office hours. Documents take 48 hours to generate after making a request. 18

19 Setting up an Irish Bank ACCOunt There are several national banks in Ireland. One of them, Bank of Ireland, has facilities on campus. It is located adjacent to the Atrium under the Dining Hall. Bank of Ireland has dedicated student officers who deal with general financial issues. (This is now in the Hamilton Building). To open any bank account, you will need to show valid proof of identity, complete with a photograph and proof of address. On request, the college can provide a letter confirming you are a Trinity student and listing your home and Dublin addresses. Once you have registered, this letter can be obtained from the Academic Registry. Alternatively, you can print your letter from the portal (after registration) and then bring it to the Academic Registry to get it stamped and signed there and then. There are normally no fees charged on student bank accounts. Please note that you may have to wait for 2-3 days before presenting your letter from them to the bank. Pay to Study Payment Option Trinity partners with Pay to Study to allow international students to pay from their home country in their local currency. The service also provides a detailed receipt and helps the Student Finance team better track payments to student numbers than using traditional wire transfer payments. There is no international transfer charge for using the service. This is the recommended method of payment for international students, with credit card payments as a second preference. 19

20 Accommodation Student Accommodation university accommodation is available on and off campus. Once you have accepted your unconditional offer, you may make your TCD accommodation application online. If you would like university accommodation, you are advised to apply as early as possible at Privately Rented Accommodation As Trinity College Dublin cannot support all requests for accommodation, many students secure off-campus accommodation. It s best to consult for private housing opportunities. The Daft website is usually the best option for finding good, affordable housing. It allows you to search by area, price range and a host of other categories. Top online accommodation resources include:

21 Temporary ACCOMMODATIOn It is helpful for new students, particularly international students, to note that it can be rather difficult to secure accommodation in Dublin while outside of the country. The Accommodation Office provides the option of temporary accommodation on campus before term begins. This can be a convenient, easy option when you first arrive in order to conduct your long-term private accommodation search. See the website for more details and to sign up. Space is limited, so please reserve a room early at UsefulInformation/PrivateRentedAccommodation/ Accommodation Advisory Service If you do not secure university housing or wish to find your own accommodation, the Students Union operates an Accommodation Advisory Service throughout August and September. It will be located on the ground floor in the Students Union building, House 6, on campus. The service will be open Monday to Friday from The Accommodation Advisory Service offers computers and phones free of charge to assist with your search. The service will provide information on tenant s rights and provides an excellent opportunity to meet other students looking for housing.
