EDL Faculty Endowed Scholarship: In 2016, the Department of Educational Leadership established an award to support student learning experiences related to coursework such as professional development, international travel, or course tuition.the 2019 award amount is for $1800. Robert & Marge Mills Endowed Scholarship in Educational Leadership: Established in 2017 by Robert and Marge Mills, this scholarship will support an EDL student who is seeking a degree or advanced certification in the field of K-12 education. The 2019 award amount is $1000. Electronic applications and details can be requested from Nan Clapp (clapp1nl@cmich.edu). 4 ////////////////////// Feature The CMU/OCASA Outstanding Research Award for 2018 The CMU/OCASA (Central Michigan University/ Ontario College Administrative Staff Association) Outstanding Research Award for 2018 was presented to Heather Raikou, an Academic Quality Officer at Georgian College, and a student in the department of Educational Leadership here at CMU. The award was presented to Heather Raikou at the OCASA Leaders and Innovators Professional Development Conference in King City. The CMU/OCASA Outstanding Research Award is presented annually to Ontario students in CMU s Master of Arts in Education degree (which focuses on the Ontario college system) for conducting outstanding research in Ontario. The award is sponsored jointly by CMU and OCASA. Research papers are nominated by CMU faculty, reviewed first by a CMU Committee to select finalists who are passed along to an OCASA review panel, which selects the award winner. A Georgian College employee, Ms. Raikou s capstone paper was completed as a requirement for her Master of Arts in Education degree through CMU s Ontario partnerships. Which provide CMU s program on site at five colleges in the province, Durham, Humber, George Brown, Georgian, and Mohawk. The runner up, Norma Williams, a student in the department of Educational Leadership, was also recognized. 5 /// Awards and Recognitions Ph.D. student Tonya Bailey was recently named the new Chief Diversity Officer at Lansing Community College. Tonya previously worked at MSU as the director of Student Success. She transitioned in Fall 2018 to her new role at LCC leading the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Congratulations Tonya! Dr. Andrew J. Neumann, an Ed.D. alumnus and Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center building trades teacher, was awarded $100,000 as one of three first-place winners of the 2018 Harbor FreightTools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan has recognized an Educational Leadership student as one of the Top 50 Latinas of Michigan. Carmen Stricker, who is the Assistant Director of Freshmen Operations at SVSU, and Ed.D. student, and the other honorees will be recognized at the Statewide Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations. Mit Foley, an Ed.D. student and Director of Secondary Education for Saginaw Public Schools, has been awarded the School Superintendents Association 2019 honors. Mit has been selected as a recipient of the 2019 AASA Educational Administrative Scholarship Award, and he will be honored during the 2019 National Conference on Education. Riley Justis, a Ph.D. student, was recently named a recipient of Central Michigan University s College of Education and Human Services 2019 Learning and Leading Award. The Award recognizes undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education and Human Services who demonstrate excellence in the clasroom, within their clinical experiences, and through leadership, service and professionalism. 5

8 ///////////////// Faculty EDL and Faculty Staff Frimpomaa Ampaw, Ed.D., is an Associate Professor for the department of Educational Leadership at Central Michigan University. Dr. Ampaw teaches Quantitative Analysis, Advanced Quantitative Analysis, and Finance in Higher Education. Dr. Ampaw s research interests include retention and persistence in higher education; minorities and women in science education, and labor market outcomes of higher education. Eric Buschlen, Ed.D., is an Associate Professor for the department of Educational Leadership at Central Michigan University. Dr. Buschlen has taught the American College Student, Student Affairs Administration, Academic Profession, and Leadership: Theory & Practice. Dr. Buschlen s research interests include leadership education, youth leadership development, leadership through community service and service learning experiences, and the impact youth sports have on developing leadership capacities in both coaches and players. Nan Clapp, is the Office Manager for the Department of Educational Leadership. Nan has been with the department since Mark Deschaine, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor, and Coordinator for Assessment, Certification, and Accreditation for the Department. Dr. Deschaine has taught Teacher Leadership, Administration of School Curriculum, Leadership Internship, Organizational Change in Educational Institutions, Instructional Supervision and Leadership, and Doctoral Seminar. Dr. Deschaine s research agenda examines how theory, policy, and processes support educational leaders in their implementation of effective differentiated programs and instruction for all students. Anne Hornak, Ph.D., is a Professor in the department of Educational Leadership at Central Michigan University. Her focus is on higher education administration and student affairs. Dr. Hornak has taught Ethics, Social Justice, Helping Skills, Qualitative Research, and Student Development Theory. Her research interests include ethics and decision making, student affairs in community colleges, and the impact of college cost on engagement and persistence. Benjamin P. Jankens, Ed.D., is an Associate Professor and the Department Chair for Educational Leadership at Central Michigan University. Dr. Janken s has taught School and Community Relations, The Principalship, Leadership Capstone, Leadership Internship, Organizational Change, Public School Finance, Educational Policy Analysis, and Culture and Change in Educational Institutions. Dr. Janken s research interests include school culture and climate, school performance, organizational leadership, charter schools and authorizing, and reform efforts in education. Matthew Johnson, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor for the department of Educational Leadership at Central Michigan. Dr. Johnson has taught Critical Perspectives of Development Theory, Educational Research Design, Leadership Theory and Practice, College Student Development, and Student Development Theory. Dr. Johnson s research focuses on the intersections of leadership, civic engagement and social justice. He is interested in how college experiences help students learn and develop into civically engaged citizens who work effectively across differences. Barbara Klocko, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor for the department of Educational Leadership at Central Michigan. Dr. Klocko has taught Doctoral Seminar and Philosophy of Education. Dr. Klocko s research interests are K-12 leadership stress and resiliency, scholar-practitioner research, and innovation in educational leadership. Ethan A. Kolek, Ed.D., is an Assistant Professor for the department of Educational Leadership at Central Michigan. Dr. Kolek has taught Assessment in Higher Education, Readings in Higher Education, 8

Dr. Kolek s research interests include knowledge production, research methods in higher education, the college student experience, and civic engagement. Sarah Marshall, Ph.D., is a Professor of Educational Leadership with an emphasis in higher education administration at Central Michigan University. She also directs the Graduate Certificate in College Teaching program and serves as a Center for Teaching Excellence Fellow at the same institution. Her research interests include teaching techniques to enhance student learning, work/life management, university leadership, and the profession of student affairs. Kaleb G. Patrick, Ed.D., is a Professor and Program Director for the department of Educational Leadership. Dr. Patrick has taught Teaching with Technology in Higher Education Settings, Seminar - Issues in Education, Methods of director of the Master of Science Administration. Educational Research, and Student Development Theory. Dr. Patrick s research interests include online and non-traditional education, higher education administration, and leadership. Megan Taylor, is an Office Professional for the Department of Educational Leadership. She has been with the department since October Additionally, she is an MA student in the Higher Education Administration program. Gina Umpstead, J.D., Ph.D., is a Professor and Program Director for the Department of Educational Leadership. Dr. Umpstead regularly teaches Public School Law, Advanced School Law, Educational Policy Analysis, and Writing and Inquiry. Dr. Umpstead s research interests include education law & policy issues related to equal educational opportunities, teacher workforce reforms, and educational innovation. David Whale, Ed.D., is a Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at Central Michigan University.
