2 The Executive Director, Campaigns is an ideal opportunity for a highly ambitious, experienced, development leader with outstanding fundraising skills to partner with the President and VP of Advancement at a most exciting time in the College s history. This person will have the opportunity to direct a $100 million comprehensive capital campaign while also developing a high-performing major gifts portfolio. The right individual will contribute to the growth and advancement of all major gift activity and be ready to join a team of committed colleagues in reaching Marietta's aspirational goals through the campaign efforts. Campaign Overview The College is embarking on a five-year, $100 million comprehensive campaign, This Is the Time. The campaign will serve to enhance academic programs, facilitate net revenue generation and grow the College endowment. A recent visioning process has identified new strategic goals to which this campaign will serve as a response, while simultaneously providing a way for alumni, friends, parents, corporations and foundations to invest in Marietta College. 3 Leadership Dr. William N. Ruud President Dr. William N. Ruud is among the nation s most prominent leaders in higher education after revitalizing two campuses in Iowa and Pennsylvania. On July 3, 2016, Ruud became Marietta College s 19th President. President Ruud established his leadership goals early on, including putting students and their experience at Marietta first, as well as establishing the brand recognition of Marietta College as one of the top contemporary liberal arts institutions in the region. Born in North Dakota, Ruud graduated from the University of North Dakota with a B.S. in Public Administration and Hospital Administration and earned an MBA and Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior/Management from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. President Ruud also served in the U.S. Army as an Armor and Adjutant General officer from Prior to joining Marietta, Ruud served as the 10th President of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, from 2013 to During his three years at UNI, the institution reversed a downward enrollment trend and experienced increased donations of more than $50 million. Marietta is Ruud s third presidency, as he was the 15th president at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania from During his time at Shippensburg, Ruud implemented a facilities master plan in connection with the university s strategic plan and led the university s development of an academic master plan. President Ruud has assisted in a variety of leadership capacities at colleges and universities across the U.S. He has used his wealth of experience to lead universities to academic excellence and achievement, as well as ensure they fulfill their essential role in the region and state. He began his academic career teaching business courses at Northwestern Louisiana State University in From , he conducted his research in leadership assessment at the U.S. Army Research Institute in Washington, D.C.; he also taught management theory and organizational behavior courses at Central Michigan University from From , Ruud taught management, organizational behavior, strategy, policy and ethics courses at the University of Toledo and was awarded tenure in He served as an Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies, coordinated the MBA program as an Associate Dean, served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, Assistant Director of the University Honors Program MARIETTA COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 3
4 and eventually served as Interim Dean of the College of Business Administration while at Toledo. In 1993, President Ruud was appointed Dean of the College of Business & Economics and Professor of Management at Boise State University. He was then promoted in 1998 to Vice President for Institutional Advancement. At Boise State, he led a successful a $12.5 million campaign for a new engineering facility, established faculty fellowships and created endowments to support student research. From , he took leave as an Executive-in-Residence and served as the Chief Education Policy Advisor for Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne. He worked with the State Department of Education and State Board of Education on all pre-k through higher education issues. In 2004, Ruud was named Vice President for Development/University Relations and Professor of Management at California State University, Stanislaus. He achieved record fundraising levels, doubled membership in the alumni association, raised more than $10 million for student scholarships and increased community partnerships. He continues to research institutional leadership and organizational behavior topics. Ruud and his wife of 40 years, Judy, reside in the President s House with their cockapoo, Fuzzy. Angela Anderson Vice President for Advancement Angela Anderson, who has almost 20 years of experience in the academic world in addition to 10 years of experience in corporate human resources, joined Marietta College in July 2007 as a Major Gifts Officer. She has held various roles in the development division of advancement managing major and annual giving and advancement services, including donor relations, events and stewardship. She was appointed Interim Vice President in August Prior to joining Marietta College, Anderson was the Assistant Dean of Career Resources and Director of the Corporate Leadership Fellow Program at Ohio University s College of Business. During her time at Ohio, she revived the College of Business Internship Program and increased student participation in the program by more than 400%. She also originated the College of Business Internship Fair, hosting between 25 and 45 companies and hundreds of students over the years. In addition to the fair, she coordinated alumni events in various cities, including Columbus, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and New York City. Anderson also served as an instructor of human resource management and professional communications at Ohio University. Anderson and her husband, Jeffrey, reside in Athens, Ohio, with their two children, Reed and Hannah. The Opportunity: Following the recent commitment from Marietta College s Board of Trustees to adopt an ambitious and far-reaching strategic plan and related comprehensive campaign, the College seeks to attract a talented, inspirational development leader. The Executive Director has a key leadership role in supporting a high-performing frontline fundraising program during this transformative time for the College. Position Overview Executive Director, Campaigns Summary: The Executive Director of Major Gifts and Campaign Coordinator will focus all professional time on ensuring the effective execution of the College s Comprehensive Capital Campaign. This position reports directly to the President and works in close collaboration with the Vice President for Advancement. This position is a senior member of the Advancement management team looking at overall strategic developmental concerns and planning approaches to effectively increase major gift contributions to the college and will execute all aspects of the Comprehensive Capital Campaign. This position will manage a portfolio of high capacity prospects in addition to providing the Campaign Steering Committee, Campaign co-chairs, volunteers and staff with the staff support and tools they need to be successful. Duties and Responsibilities: Acts as the primary lead, strategist, and coordinator for the College's Comprehensive Capital Campaign, working directly with the President, and in partnership with the Vice President for Advancement, the Vice President for Communications and Brand Management and the Director of Advancement Communications; Develops a portfolio of high capacity prospects and does prospect discovery calls with individuals, corporate and foundation partners in advance of Presidential, Vice Presidential or Board of Trustee member visits; MARIETTA COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 5
6 With assistance from the staff, obtains research to identify major gift prospects and information concerning financial capability, special interests, historical and current connections with the College, close friends and advisors and financial contributions to other causes; Travels regularly to complete an average of 10 prospect visits a month; Work directly with the Vice President for Advancement regarding all campaign specific activities, including but not limited to: resourcing and managing recruited volunteers, identifying and developing sequencing of prospects, ensuring development of all needed materials, research and briefing papers, major gift prospectuses, needed correspondence from the President's office and driving overall campaign activity; In partnership with the Vice President for Advancement, staff the Campaign Steering Committee and other Campaign volunteers; Engage, as appropriate the assistance and involvement of appropriate persons - members of the Board of Trustees, Campaign co-chairs, other key volunteers, the President, Vice President for Advancement, faculty and other key College personnel and be responsible for attentively coordinating the overall strategic direction of the President's Office in conjunction with the College's Comprehensive Campaign, Strategic Plan and Campus Enhancement Plan; Keep the President, Vice President, Campaign co-chairs and other senior management informed of status of key prospect strategies and ensures that the President's Office is communicating appropriately with donor constituents and is briefed on upcoming donor visits; Develop strategies for solicitations, utilizing institutional leadership appropriate to the level of solicitation; Working with the Vice President for Advancement and the Director of Donor Relations and Advancement Services and in partnership with the advancement team, develop innovative donor recognition opportunities, coordinate special donor cultivation events and assist in creating a plan of overall stewardship of current donors, including strategies to grow the relationships going forward; In partnership with the Executive Director of Major Gifts and Director of Advancement Services, develops the agenda and drives a monthly prospect management meeting with Advancement Team members; With the President and Vice President for Advancement, represents the College at public functions and events, including social and professional gatherings; Represents the Office of Advancement in the place of the Vice President for Advancement when called; Maintains familiarity with salient issues relating to higher education, fundraising and financial planning, showing a desire to stay abreast of new trends and ideas; and Works closely with the Major Gifts Team, Planned Giving, Annual Giving Team. 7 Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred; Seven or more years of successful and progressive fundraising experience working with prospects capable of making gifts of $100,000-$1,000,000 or more required; Mastery level of competence of higher education fundraising, experience in corporate and foundation fundraising valued and campaign experience a must; Has demonstrated experience and/or aptitude to be a strong mentor, coach, leader and manager; Computer proficiency, with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and Raiser's Edge preferred; Forward-thinking communication/presentation skills (both verbal and written), with highlydeveloped interpersonal and relationship building expertise, along with the proven ability to successfully advocate for and respond to matters on behalf of the College; Experience with the key administrative functions of a College, including but not limited to academic affairs, enrollment management, finance and administration, marketing and brand management, athletics and student life; Advanced problem solving/triage skills and the ability to think creatively and persuasively; Significant experience supporting a CEO/President and/or Vice President for Advancement amongst a diverse population and within an institution of higher education or non-profit setting; and Experience reading, analyzing and extrapolating relevant data from professional and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
