1 WHARTON BOROUGH BOARD OF EDUCATION MINUTES COMBINED WORKSHOP/REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING TECHNOLOGY LIBRARY CENTER - MACKINNON MIDDLE SCHOOL November 13, pm I. CALL TO ORDER At 7pm, Mr. called to order the Combined Workshop/Regular Business Meeting of the Wharton Borough Board of Education. II. OPEN PUBLIC MEETING STATEMENT Mr. read the following: The New Jersey Open Public Meetings Law was enacted to insure the right of the public to have advance notice of and to attend the meetings of public bodies at which any business affecting their interests is discussed and acted upon. In accordance with the provisions of this act and Board of Education Bylaw 0160, the Wharton Borough Board of Education has caused notice of this meeting to be sent to the Daily Record, posted on the bulletin board in the Wharton Public School, filed with the Wharton Borough Clerk, and mailed to all those people who have requested individual notice and paid the required fee. III. IV. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL X A X A A X X Also present: Mr. Dennis Mack, Interim Superintendent, Ms. Pamela Hinman, Board Secretary, Ms. Sandy Cammarata, Assistant Business Administrator, Mr. Alan Bocchino, Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction and one (1) member of the public. V. DISTRICT MISSION STATEMENT Mr. read the following: In partnership with the community, the Wharton School District is committed to educational excellence and guarantees challenging learning opportunities for all students to become life-long learners and productive and responsible members of society. It is the expectation of this school district that all pupils achieve the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards at all grade levels. VI. COMMUNICATION RECEIVED 10/24/12 - Letter of Retirement received from Art Teacher, Janet Tomaszewski VII. REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS A. Superintendent s Report The Superintendent thanked everyone for attending the meeting and reported on the following: Wharton School District lost 6 days due to Hurricane Sandy but picked up 2 days from Teacher s Convention. Students of the Month for September and October, NJASK results, and the June 30, 2012 CAFR will be discussed at the November 27, 2012 meeting. Approval to submit the QSAC and Statement of Assurance 1 Minutes Wharton Borough Public Schools November 13, 2012
2 B. Committee Reports PTA Basket Bingo was changed to December 7, 2012 in the APR Room. C. Business Administrator/Board Secretary s Report: Ms. Hinman reported on the following: E-rate funding at $11, for this year Annual report submissions of ASSA, DRTRS, CMP, M1 and Debt Service all complete. QSAC submission deadline has been extended to December 1, 2012 but we are ready to submit. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the Bid Opening moved to November 15, 2012 at 2 pm for Ceramic Tile. Storm Damage Appreciation to the Borough for their assistance during the storm. VIII. IX. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR DISCUSSION N/A A. MINUTES: EXHIBIT A Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the Board of Education tabled the Minutes from the meeting of October 2, 2012 (Business Session) and approves the Minutes from the October 16, 2012 (Work Session). Motion: Mr. Seconded: Mr. All in Favor X --- X X X X. B. CURRICULUM & STUDENT ACTIVITIES-EXHIBIT B 1. The Board of Education approves the following Fundraisers: Partylite Candles (C. Silvestri/B. Lengyel) 6 th Grade will sell candles from 10/29/12-11/12/12 All funds will be applied to the 6 th grade trip & dance. Partylite Candles (M. Andrea/B.Lengyel) 7 th Grade will sell candles from 10/29/12-11/12/12 All funds will be applied to the 7 th grade trip & dance. Monster Popcorn Hands(M. Andrea) 7th Grade will sell from 10/22 10/26. All funds will be applied to the 7 th grade class trip. 5 Below (E. Johannesen/S. Johnston) Public is asked to shop at 5 Below between 11/23/12 12/1/12 and 12/16/12 12/23/12 and a portion of the sales will be given back to the 8 th Grade Class. All funds will be applied to the 8 th Grade class. TGIF Dining-to-Donate (E. Johannesen/S. Johnston) Public asked to dine at TGIF on January 9, 2013 between 5 pm 10 pm and a portion of the sales will be forwarded to the 8 th Grade Class. Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the Board of Education accepts the following grant: Grant Program Purpose Total 2012 BASF Science Education Grant Purchase First Option Science System kits $5, The Board of Education approves the following Fundraisers: Peer To Peer Food Donations (Johnston/Laudati) Grades K-8 will donate non-perishable food between November 16-19, All items collected will be donated to Wharton United Community Church at St. John s and St. Mary s Church in Wharton. PERSONNEL: EXHIBIT C New personnel employment appointments are contingent upon the required state and federal criminal history background checks in accordance with N.J.S.A. 116, P.L The Board authorizes the submission to the County Superintendent, as required, applications for emergency hiring and the applicants attestations that they have not been convicted of any disqualifying crime pursuant to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.1 et. seq., N.J.S.A. 18A:39-17 et. seq., or N.J.S.A. 18A: et. seq 1. Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the Board of Education approves the revision of the Wharton School Calendar to include the following dates as school days: November 8, 2012 and November 9, Whereas the bids were initially advertised for Corridor Wainscot Repair at the Marie V. Duffy Elementary School. The bids were to be opened October 29, 2012 at 11am, due to Hurricane Sandy, the bid opening will now be opened on November 15, 2012 at 2pm in the Board Office. An Additional notice was advertised on November 10, WHEREAS on June 28, 2012, the Board authorized a team of teachers, support staff members, administrators and Board members to undertake the QSAC self-assessment process, and WHEREAS, the team convened to review the DPRs in the five areas of school district effectiveness on the following dates: 9/7/12 10/22/12 11/13/12 WHEREAS the Superintendent and Business Administrator have reported to the Board during open session the progress of the team, and specific deficiencies in each area, now therefore be it RESOLVED, the Board accept the DPRs and Statement of Assurance and authorize the electronic submission of the District Performance Reviews to the New Jersey Department of Education. 5 Minutes Wharton Borough Public Schools November 13, 2012
