1 Counselling Tutor Foreword Thank you for your interest in the post of Counselling Tutor at Spurgeon s College. The post of Counselling Tutor will commence January 2019 following the establishment of an additional course at the College. Spurgeon's College has a worldwide reputation for its work in theological education, which is well known. However its counselling department is also recognised as a centre of excellence and is an integral part of our strategic plan and vision for the future development of the College. Presently Counselling is taught on two days a week. The CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies courses are taught on Thursdays and the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is taught on Fridays. Since September 2018, in partnership with the Institute of Pastoral Counselling and Supervision, we have also been delivering a Certificate in Reflective Practice and Pastoral Supervision. Consequently one of the Tutors who were teaching on the Level 2 and 3 courses has transferred to teaching this new course, therefore creating the need to recruit additional capacity. It should be noted that the counselling courses, although taught in a faith-based College are not Christian counselling courses. The material is provided by CSCT and the courses are validated by CPCAB. We hope you find the information provided in this pack helpful. 2 The College Spurgeon s College was founded in 1856 by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the leading nonconformist preacher in 19th century Britain. Formerly located with the Metropolitan Tabernacle at the Elephant and Castle in Southwark, it moved to its present premises in The College is in membership with the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Evangelical Alliance and Micah Global. The College has always trained students for the Baptist ministry. In the last two decades, its provision has diversified considerably, and Spurgeon s has become known for its enterprise and initiative in developing new courses in response to the changing needs of church and society. At any one time the College has full-time, part- time and online students currently registered across its programmes, with around 180 on-site at some point each week during term time. As part of our Counselling staff team, you would be assigned to teach parts of the two following CPCAB courses as well as to conduct assessments and marking. The Certificate in Counselling Skills (CSK-L2) which comprises 90 hours and is taught on Thursdays from 8.30am till 4.30pm between September and the end of January each academic year. The Certificate in Counselling Studies (CST-L3) which also comprises 90 hours and is taught on Thursdays from 8.30am till 4.30pm from the end of January till early June each academic year. The closing date for applications is 12 noon Friday 9 th November Interview date: Friday 23 rd November Terms and conditions of the appointment The role of Counselling Tutor at Spurgeon s College will be offered on a permanent basis and will be offered as an annualised hours contract. The annualised hours contract provides flexibility out of term time and the ability to schedule marking time to fit in with other commitments. The contract is for 350 hours per annum. This breaks down includes: 120 hours teaching, which is 8hrs once a week (Thursdays) in College teaching for 30 weeks 45 hours preparation (following initial induction training), which is 1 hour a week for 30 weeks 110 hours marking, which is 6 hours a week for the 30 teaching weeks 15 hours interviewing prospective students The remaining hours are floating hours used up by occasional meetings, preparation, open days etc. Reward package The reward package has two main elements: salary and a defined contribution pension. Salary: The salary per annum is 6,650. Pension: The College offers an excellent defined contribution pension scheme, to which both the College and individual staff members contribute. Job Description: Counselling Tutor Key Responsibilities would be: To deliver two Counselling certificate courses, Level 2 in Counselling Skills and Level 3 in Counselling Studies on Thursdays at Spurgeon s College. To prepare to deliver the above stated courses with the aid of prepared material supplied by CSCT. To mark students assignments weekly and portfolios at the end of each course against a set of criteria from CPCAB (the validating body) and give regular written feedback. To act as personal Tutor to half of each certificate class and to hold regular Tutorials with students, monitoring progress and raising concerns. To facilitate students in growing self-awareness and personal development. To promote the understanding of Spurgeon s vision and ethos in dealing with students. To assist the course leader in assessment decisions. To assist in interviewing and assessing potential candidates for the courses. To attend a meeting with the External Verifier on at least one of her biannual visits to Spurgeon s College. To attend CPCAB s Standardisation Day. 5 P a g e

6 Person specification Personal experience and competencies Essential At least 10 hours of personal therapy. A therapeutic counselling qualification at Level 4 or above comprising at least 420 hours. Membership of a professional association for counselling. Evidence of 30 hours CPD activities per year. Evidence of current supervised counselling practice. Evidence of a supervision qualification or experience of supervising groups of individuals in a counselling setting. A teaching qualification or be working towards one (or be willing to be enrolled on one at Spurgeon s College expense). Evidence of 6 months teaching and assessing at Level 2. Desirable A degree or Masters in Counselling and/or Psychotherapy Skills and abilities Essential Strong intellect and well-developed problem solving skills, evidenced by a strategic outlook and ability to discern and respond to changing circumstances. Excellent influencing and communication skills. Excellent teaching and presentational skills. Excellent administrative skills. Excellent networking skills. There is a strong ethos of team work amongst the Counselling staff where communication and reflection is highly valued and essential to achieving joined-up working.
