4 02 GOVERNANCE The University is governed by a 22-member Senate representing University and community interests. Senate is led by a Chancellor and Deputy Chancellor. The Senate has delegated to the Vice-Chancellor many of its powers under the University of Queensland Act 1998 to appoint staff, manage and control University affairs and property, and manage and control finances. 5 03 STRATEGIC PLAN The University s strategic objectives for are defined around the key themes of Learning, Discovery and Engagement. We are reviewing our Strategic Plan during 2016 taking into account the consequences of and drivers in the Australian Federal Government s recent innovation statement. The new Student Strategy will inform this review ( UQ s strategies are further underpinned by its values, which are the Pursuit of Excellence, Creativity and Independent Thinking, Honesty and Accountability, Mutual Respect and Diversity and Supporting our People. 6 04 INSTITUTE FOR MOLECULAR BIOSCIENCE The University of Queensland s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is a leading global research institute. IMB was established in 2000 as UQ s first research institute and is the cornerstone of one of the largest bioscience research precincts in Australia. The Institute s 500 scientists, support staff and postgraduate students from more than 40 countries are working to improve quality of life for all. IMB s multidisciplinary research programs focus on discovery for disease application, working across a number of fields including medical genomics, drug discovery and biotechnology. By investigating the basis of growth and development at the genetic, molecular, cellular and organ level, our researchers aim to better understand the development processes and pathways involved in human and animal health and disease. They also work to translate these findings into diagnostics, technologies and therapeutics to more effectively prevent, detect and treat disease, and deliver a sustainable future for Australia through initiatives such as clean energy and new agricultural compounds. IMB is equipped with state-of-the-art research infrastructure including mouse and zebrafish facilities, advanced imaging and microarray platforms, high-throughput sequencing, advanced bioinformatics and proteomics all of which support the Institute s leading life sciences research. 7 05 ROLE OF THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR (RESEARCH) As Deputy Director (Research), you will be responsible for the development, facilitation and reporting of the strategic direction of research within the Institute, the quality and impact of that research, the growth of local, national and international research collaborations, and engagement and impact with a broad range of stakeholders, including academia and industry. As a Group Leader, you will run a research group funded largely by competitive grants and fellowships, conducting world leading science in your field of expertise. You will be a driver of relevant area(s) of research in national and international arenas. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The position reports to the Director, Institute for Molecular Bioscience. It works closely with the Deputy Director (Operations & Strategy), the Senior Management Committee (SMC) and Institute Advisory Board. It will develop relationships with IMB Group Leaders, peers, University Executive Management and external stakeholders to engage in collaborative research that meets the strategic goals of the Institute, University and State and Federal Government priorities. DUTIES Policy and leadership Advise the Director on all Institute matters relating to Research; Facilitate growth of research activity in the Institute, including developing mechanisms and targets to achieve this; Coordinate and plan the development of research infrastructure across the Institute, working with the Institute s Platform Technologies Committee to achieve this; Develop and coordinate strategies for maximising the Institute s success in gaining external and internal research funding; Represent the Institute on appropriate University committees, working parties and review teams e.g. University Research Committee; Maintain and disseminate current information about relevant research policy areas and initiatives in government (state and federal), in the professions and in relevant industries, including external funding opportunities; Develop strategies to foster research collaborations within the Institute, across Faculties and Institutes, and with parties external to UQ. Research enhancement and external relations Work with the Director, SMC and Advisory Board to establish and develop Institute research priorities; Interact with industry, government, professions and the wider community on all research matters and promote Institute research activities to external stakeholders; Work with Uniquest to realise timely commercialisation opportunities; Assist the Director to maintain effective links with government departments, authorities, business, commerce and industry organisations relevant to the Institute s research activities. Research scholarship and staff development Advise staff and students about forthcoming research opportunities (e.g. ARC and NHMRC programs) and alert staff to grant opportunities; Coordinate Institute workshops and staff development activities on research-related issues; Facilitate research mentorship within the Institute;
8 06 Ensure staff and students are aware of UQ policies and procedures around research; Encourage development of activities to attract the best research higher degree students. Research As a Group Leader, oversee an independent research program including securing external research funding; Conduct high quality research and publish scholarly papers; Engage with industry and/or medical collaborators and stakeholders for the translation of research; Work with colleagues and postgraduate students in collaborative research projects; Act in a leadership role for the relevant field of research at Institute, University, national and international levels. Teaching This is a Research Focused position. All IMB Group Leaders are encouraged to engage with undergraduate students for research training, lecturing and/or other learning focused activities. Supervision of Honours (1-year research project; PhD qualifier year) and PhD students. Administration Assist the Director as required in the management of Institute s human resources and finance functions as per the HR Authorisation Schedule and Financial Delegation Framework; If required, perform in an acting capacity as Director, Institute for Molecular Bioscience. Other Ensure you are aware of and comply with legislation and University policy relevant to the duties undertaken, including: the University s Code of Conduct. requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Institute/ School. the adoption sustainable practices in all work activities and compliance with associated legislation and related University sustainability responsibilities and procedures. requirements of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000, the National Code 2007 and associated legislation, and related responsibilities and procedures developed by the University.
9 07 SELECTION CRITERIA The successful appointee will have a demonstrated capacity to provide academic leadership, a track record of success within the university and a commitment to building excellence in research within the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, and UQ. Essential A PhD and an international research profile in a field of research relevant to life sciences and consistent with the research foci of the Institute. Demonstrated ability to provide academic leadership in research and professional activities. The ability to think and act strategically including the ability to plan and to deliver continuous improvement of research programs; to deploy human, financial and other resources effectively; and to manage a broad range of administrative and research oversight processes. Strong interpersonal ability and communication skills including the ability to work with others to achieve outcomes and continual improvement, including the ability to lead and implement change, and to lead and motivate staff. The skills to represent the Institute s interests in the University and the wider community, and with relevant professional and other bodies. Seminar Applicants invited for interview will be expected to present a research seminar in conjunction with the selection interview process. Qualification Verification An appointment to this position is subject to the verification of the highest academic qualification from the conferring institution. SELECTION COMMITTEE The selection committee for this appointment will be chaired by the Provost.

They should have outstanding strategic skills, including the ability to develop, articulate and sustain shared vision, strategy and to implement it across the Institute to achieve research excellence with tangible outcomes of output, engagement and impact. The position is full-time, fixed-term for five years with the potential for renewal and subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation for new appointees.
