1 2018 Orientation Leader Position Description This year we seek to recruit hard working, humble, and enthusiastic undergraduate students to help guide incoming students through the transition to Emory University. Orientation leaders serve as a university liaison to all new students and families and have the responsibility of representing the university during an intensive, week-long orientation session held the week prior to the start of classes. Orientation leaders play a critical role in the academic, emotional, and cultural integration of students into the university as the school year begins. TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS All Orientation Leaders must meet a certain set of expectations if accepted. These expectations have been established to ensure the best possible experience for new students, their families, the Orientation Staff, and fellow Orientation Leaders. Orientation Leaders are expected to: Exhibit servant-leadership and mentor a small group of new students as they transition to college. Contribute to the logistical set up and tear down of Orientation events. Actively participate in all aspects of Orientation with a positive and professional attitude. Seek to make all new students and their families and/or guests feel welcome. Make every effort to present Emory University in the best light possible. Dress appropriately and follow orientation staff dress code as established during training in August. Abide by all university policies and standards of student conduct. Actively promote all campus activities and organizations with which students should be familiar or in which they express interest. (If you are a member of a particular social, service, or other organization on campus, do not use Orientation as a venue for promoting your organization over others.) Consistently and reliably act with integrity (which is defined as acting with honor, humility, and helpfulness). Typical responsibilities of an Orientation Leader include: Attend all mandatory dates as outlined below, be on time and ready to learn when training begins. Assist incoming students and their families as they move into their residence halls. Guide students through orientation events and activities. Lead various small group discussions related to academic advising, class registration, new student challenges, and finding community.

2 Collaborate with Resident Advisors and/or Sophomore Advisors to facilitate Creating Emory. Assist faculty/staff in academic advising for incoming students. Set up/break down events the week of Orientation as well as staff evening programs. Assist with logistics and event management for Week of Welcome events. Escort new students to Carter Town Hall. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Serving as an Orientation Leader is both a unique and rewarding opportunity for personal leadership development and professional growth. Orientation Leaders enjoy a memorable experience while providing a valuable service to the University community. This position requires humble and motivated student leaders who have a strong interest in assisting new students with their transition to the Emory University community. All applicants should: Exhibit attitudes of humility and servant leadership. Demonstrate strong work ethic and initiative. Have pride in being an Emory student and be eager to share their experience. Be involved in the campus community. Desire to be a role model on campus and in the community. Have high standards of ethical behavior and professionalism. Act with moral courage in the light of challenging circumstances. Act with integrity given the access and privilege offered to orientation leaders. Have a positive attitude. Work well under pressure. Be creative, flexible, and have a sense of humor. Exhibit a strong commitment to becoming informed and knowledgeable about the University s academic policies, procedures, deadlines, and various advising systems. Demonstrate the ability to work with a diverse group of people, including students, families, faculty, and staff. All applicants must: Be a full-time Emory University undergraduate student and remain enrolled through the 2018 fall semester. Completed 12 credit hours at Emory University by January Not be studying abroad during Fall Not be attending the Business School Retreat during orientation. Not be on academic or disciplinary probation as defined by the Emory University Honor Code and Undergraduate Code of Conduct. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of application and maintain a 3.0 throughout employment (circumstances such as a disability, which may have impacted GPA, will be considered on an individual basis). Not hold a position as an RA, SA, SRA, CC, or participate in a Pre-Orientation Program (i.e. isee, OEO, etc.) during the 2018 fall semester.

Few exceptions will be made for absences given the importance of this role to the Emory community. Saturday, August 25 th Friday, August 30 th Saturday, September 1 st Saturday, September 8 th * Mid-September, Evening Hours *Hours will typically only include evenings, and OLs will only be committed to 1-2 events during this week depending on the final Week of Welcome calendar of events. If times of day are not indicated above, assume you will be busy for the duration of the day. Detailed schedules will be provided for training and orientation in August.

4 APPLICATION & INTERVIEW PROCESS There are 3 components to the Orientation Leader application process: an application, a formal recommendation, and an interview. These 3 components are described in detail below. APPLICATION ü Candidates should submit their online application, which includes an electronic submission of a Creative Reflection, by Monday, February 12 th at 12:00 PM NOON. ü The online application can be found through this link: ü Creative Reflection Prompt: "A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the 'top of the pyramid,' servant leadership is different. The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible." - Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership Reflect on this definition of servant leadership and your own experiences of service. Creatively tell us about a time you served others well, and upload your file via the OrgSync application. Example submissions include but are not limited to a scrapbook page, poem, song, video, or written reflection. Reflections must be submitted through the OrgSync application. RECOMMENDATION ü Candidates must submit a faculty or staff reference with their application. Recommendations are also due Monday, February 12 th at 12:00 PM NOON. ü The recommendation form can be found through this link and should be sent to your reference well in advance of the deadline. You are responsible for sending your reference this link: INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEW ü Candidates who are selected from the online application will proceed to an individual interview. ü Interviews will take place on Saturday, February 17 th between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. ü All interviews will last approximately 20 minutes and are a mandatory component of the application process. ü Further information will be provided on how to proceed if you are studying abroad or are unable to attend our interview day for serious, extenuating circumstances (which will be reviewed on an individual basis).
