1 art history program newsletter The year in review It s been a great year, thanks mainly to a terrific group of students who continue to distinguish themselves in lots of different ways, both in and out of the classroom. One member of the class of 2015 (Elisa Walker) and three from the class of 2014 (Zoë Burnett, Haley Carloni, and Bianca Saunders) are headed to graduate school, and another 2015 grad (Alyssa Dowler) will spend next year in Germany on a Fulbright Fellowship. You can read more about their plans in the pages that follow. You ll also find updates on many other art history students, both past and present. A lot has happened since we sent out the last newsletter, and there are more changes to come: Starting this fall, all of our classes will meet in the brand new building at 20 Somerset. The Archer building, which has housed our classrooms for the past few years, is currently on the market, as is Donahue. Our High Tea, which used to happen once a year, now happens every semester, usually in November and April. (Alumni are always welcome we ll post dates and times on our Facebook page a few weeks in advance.) Krista Dahl, who has taught Art and Museums Today for us since 2010, welcomed a new addition to her family this past spring: a beautiful baby boy. Congratulations, Krista! Unfortunately she won t be teaching for us this fall, but we re happy to announce that Krista s colleague Gabrielle Wywrick, Associate Director of Education at the Institute of Contemporary Art, will be joining our faculty. We re also thrilled to have Sarah Bromberg as a colleague. Sarah, who completed her PhD in Medieval Art at the University of Pittsburgh, taught Women, Art, and Society this past spring and will be teaching sections ARH 101 and ARH 102 in 2015/2016. Next year we ll have one brand new course on the schedule, plus one that we haven t been able to offer since The new course is Status and Gender in Ancient and Medieval Art, and we re thrilled that Beth Pugliano is able to teach it. The course we re resurrecting is History of Photography. Both will be offered in the spring of Suffolk s new Arts Administration Minor, now one year old, continues to grow, and several current Art History majors are enrolled in that program. Finally, two very important personnel changes at the upper levels of university administration. First, Kenneth Greenberg, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, steps down after a decade in that position and returns to the faculty of the History Department; Maria Toyoda, a political scientist who was most recently Associate Dean at Villanova University, will become our new dean on July 1. And President Norman Smith will be leaving Suffolk as our new President, Margaret McKenna, takes over. President McKenna was formerly the head of Lesley University in Cambridge. Suffolk s new building at 20 Somerset, where art history classes will be held starting in Fall 2015.

3 News from our alumni Stephanie Boisvert (2013) is working at Salem Academy Charter School in Salem, MA, where she teaches dance as an elective fine art course in the high school and serves as a Paraprofessional for English Language Learners, supporting ELL students in their academic classes. She also teaches recreational dance classes along the North Shore and in Boston. Stephanie reports: I am in my second year dancing professionally with BoSoma Dance Company, performing and educating around New England. My first job after graduating was at the ICA, as a gallery assistant, but since then I have turned my focus towards my dance career. However, I incorporate my art history knowledge into some of my dance lesson plans, and have begun discussions with the art teacher about proposing an Art History elective course that we would co-teach. Besides work, I am looking forward to a family cruise vacation this July, and spending the summer on the coast! Zoe Burnett (2014) returned from a small town in the French Alps (Gap), where she taught English for a year. She managed to find time to travel while there, visiting places like Paris, Rome and Venice. This fall she ll be continuing her education as a graduate student in the Art History Department at UMass Amherst. large scale private events, plus learning how to do every job in the restaurant! It's been an adventure and has often been overwhelming, but I'll always be thankful for this experience. Last month I was accepted into Sotheby's Institute of Art in New York City to get my MA in Art Business. I am incredibly excited to start this new venture in my life and to be living and studying and working in one of the most prominent art capitals in the world. I can't even imagine all the new things I'm going to be able to learn and experience. Until then, I will thankfully be cutting back my hours at Tico for the summer because I will be interning at Vose Galleries on Newbury Street a few days a week. The last 2 galleries I have interned at were more modern and contemporary, so I am excited to be mixing it up and working at a gallery that focuses on 18th-20th century American art. I also focused more on European art in college so I think it will be good for me to see some more American art. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the business side of the art world before I go to school to study it more in depth. While this past year I sadly haven't been able to go on any big adventures or travels and have been focusing on work, I have been using this time to build my art history library. I've bought at least 12 new books in the past several months and have finished a few. I'm just trying to keep my knowledge fresh until I start school again! Nick Kane (2010) continues to work at decordova Sculpture Park and Museum, where he currently holds the title of Leadership and Annual Giving Officer. Most recently Nick organized decordova's annual gala, Haley Carloni (2014) will be moving to New York this fall to begin studying at Sotheby s Institute of Art. She writes that after graduating from Suffolk she got a position as a restaurant manager at the restaurant Tico in Back Bay, Boston. Managing has been tough, but it has been a huge learning experience for me and has helped me to become a better worker and leader. Some of my responsibilities have included taking inventories, writing the weekly schedule, hiring and training of new employees, planning and executing Zoë Burnett strikes a casual pose in front of Statue of the River Dora in Turin. 4 Sotheby s Institute of Art in Los Angeles. Video of the trip that she and her classmates took to Art Basel Hong Kong is available on the Sotheby s website: Programmes/Los-Angeles.aspx. She reports that Sotheby's has been an incredible experience, and that she s spending the summer working for Allouche Gallery in Soho, New York. Cory Lettier and her class of MA students at Sotheby's on a trip to Hong Kong. Black and White in the Park, welcoming 400 guests to celebrate decordova and to honor distinguished Boston gallerist Barbara Krakow, who has been instrumental in decordova's evolution and growth. The recordbreaking fundraising event raised more than $530,000 to support decordova's curatorial programs and educational programming. Outside of work, Nick and fiancé Travis are still planning to get married on September 19! Congratulations to Mary Katherine Kwasnik (2010), who just finished her Master s Degree in Library and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has recently moved back to New York City to look for a job. She writes: In my program, I specialized in Archives and Visual Resources and have spent the last two years working as a Visual Materials Archives Assistant at the Wisconsin Historical Society. I have primarily worked with a lot of analog archival photograph collections and have also gotten a lot of experience working on digital projects. I have even learned how to code! My first professional job out of college (aside from a year as an AmeriCorps tutor) was as a Museum Educator at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn, New York. I loved that job, but it made me crave something more professional. I really loved working hands-on with the collections, so I decided to get an MLIS and become an archivist. Working on my MLIS has been a huge departure from my humanities background. Having been used to writing long research papers about paintings and artists, it was a massive learning curve to have to write concise, technical reports about metadata and digital preservation. However, I really love it. There are so many directions to go in the library profession, and archives and digital projects are definitely a great way for me to maintain my love of art history and photography, and make resources accessible to the masses. After I graduate this month, I am moving back to New York City to job hunt and settle in. In August I will travel to Cleveland to present a research poster at the Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting, something that I also did last year in Washington, D.C. Cory Lettier (2012) is studying art business as a graduate student at Federica McLaws (2014) reports: After finishing up a 5 month job in the communications department at the MFA, I am now dividing my time between Miami and Panama in search of warmer climates. I moved about a month ago and I have been loving it so far. After a year of being completely immersed in Art History (ICA/Boston and MFA jobs) I decided to shift my focus for a bit. I am now working at Samsung in their communications department. The job is incredible and being able to be part of the art direction and development of their advertisements allows for a bit of an artistic flair. Since finishing at Suffolk, I have added a new member to my family; my gorgeous and completely spoiled five pound Pomeranian puppy named Zaar. He enjoys traveling as much as me and has now added four countries to his passport and even an upcoming trip to Rome. At the moment I am enjoying the Miami art scene, which ranges from the PAMM to the urban Wynwood walls but hopefully my relocation to Panama becomes permanent in less than a year with possible opportunities in museum work. Liz Pandozzi (2011), who has been with the Victoria s Secret company for several years, has been promoted to supervisor and has moved to Rhode Island. I am also traveling to and from Nevada because some of my family is planning to move there. The art gallery at the Bellagio often has nice exhibits. Art is still very much a part of my life. Occasionally I will visit museums on Gallery Night in Providence which is museums Suffolk University Art History Program 2015 newsletter 4

5 opening their doors to the public. I recently visited the Peabody Essex Museum and very much enjoyed the amount of Asian Art on display. I am currently busy with work but also looking at a few masters programs for Art History and carefully considering the option of returning to school in the (hopefully not too distant) future. Julia Rudzinski (2012) writes: I am currently living outside of Chicago, working as a Head Swim Coach and Substitute teacher at a local high school, which helps fund my art. After hiking the Appalachian Trail last year I have really begun to focus on being happy with my life career and I use that to fuel daily drive. I have also found myself spending ridiculous amounts of time outside wishing I was hiking again since returning home in October! I am trying to get my own art business started, experimenting with lots of materials and doing research into start ups and art based companies. I have looked into going back to school but it hasn't really grabbed my attention as a must-do-right-now type of decision. I try very hard to make art a daily part of my life, both in making and studying it. I am always going to museums or galleries and trying to keep tabs on what is happening in the Fine Art world. Maria Santacaterina (2014) has recently relocated to Madison, Wisconsin, where she continues to work for Bright Cellars. Maria explains: We are a direct to consumer monthly wine box and have been growing rapidly since we started in April. I'm the member experience manager responsible for everything customer facing making sure our members are happy! My first job out of Suffolk was as a Content Marketing Manager at a marketing startup. I was there for about 8 months and found Bright Cellars quickly, jumped on board and have been working here for about 9 months. I still go to art museums every chance I get! Being so close to Chicago I'm excited to have the opportunity to visit all the museums they have. I believe they have Cindy Sherman's work which I'm looking forward to seeing! I've always said this, my Art History degree has given me the skills I need to compete in such a fast-paced startup market. If I could do it again I would do my Art History degree all over and keep it the same. That being said my company will be hiring rapidly so I'll keep you posted if you come across a student interested in startups and will to move to the Midwest! Anyone interested in Maria s company can get more information (and $30 off their first box of wine) at this link: Bianca Saunders (2014) will be starting the Master s Degree Program in Museum Studies at George Washington University this fall. She explains: This summer, I'm relocating to the DC area and I plan to begin graduate school at The George Washington University in the fall. There, I'm pursuing a Master of Arts in Museum Studies. I hope to be able to explore my interest in the areas of public engagement and informal learning. Prior to this, my first job out of college was, surprisingly, in the realm of health care. I primarily worked as a clerical associate in the Medical Staff Office of the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, but I was also able to spend daily and weekly time helping out in its Office of the President and Human Resources. It was great to experience how not-for-profit organizations function at the administrative level and I am quite sad to say goodbye to the company as I prepare to leave Boston. Kristen Wawruck (2007) writes: I remain in beautiful Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, which has changed a lot in the nearly five years since I moved there. I happily remain at the New Museum as the Grants Director and at Rhizome part-time, where I oversee development activities and strategy at each respective institution. I am looking forward to the third IDEAS CITY festival in a couple weeks, which is a biennial festival comprised of dozens of art installations, performances, discussions, and more that focus on the future city, and what role art plays in it. I raised a number of grants for this next edition, as well as for the Detroit version that will happen later this fall. I look forward to seeing everything through to fruition! Most recently, I embarked on my third visit to Japan and spent about 10 days in Tokyo to catch up with friends and dive deeper into the city there, which has become one of my favorite places. Admittedly, I am fairly unfamiliar with contemporary Japanese art, so I was delighted to be in town for a large installation by Chim Pom, whose work I have been following closely for the last few years. The name of the project was called Genbutsu Over Dose, and it featured nearly twenty energizing new works by several artists. I had the fortune of being able to meet and spend time with several of the artists, and I m attaching a picture of us together. I m sure readers will be able to tell who I am out of that crew! 7 Graduating in May 2015 (from left to right): Elisa Walker, Steven Dorsey, Tarah Maresh, and Alyssa Dowler. News from our current students and graduating seniors 2015 graduate Steven Dorsey is spending the summer managing a project for the Office of Research Administration (ORAF) at Northeastern University. For the upcoming fall he hopes to be working as an intern at the Learning Project, a private school in Boston. Within the next few years, he wants to apply to The Teaching Assistant Program in France, as well as take (and pass) the MTEL's, travel, and (eventually) go to grad school! This fall Alyssa Dowler (another illustrious member of the class of 2015) will be moving to Germany to work as an English Teaching Assistant as a Fulbright Fellow. Alyssa reports: Last summer I spent four weeks in Europe traveling through Germany, France and England, before which I went on a crosscountry excursion with my family and three cats. In August I spent a week on the Oregon coast and in February I visited Montreal for a few, very cold days. Now I can say that we officially had a winter that was more miserable than a Canadian winter. She managed to see quite a bit of art during her time abroad. My trip to London coincided beautifully with the Matisse The Cut Outs exhibition at the Tate Modern. I have made it a point to visit a museum or gallery in every place that I travel so this has been a richly fulfilling year in that sense. There are usually always a few Suffolk University Art History Program 2015 newsletter treasures even in the smallest of locations. This past year, in addition to taking classes and finishing her BA (with a minors in both German Studies and Marketing), she worked for the German airline company Lufthansa. When she returns from Germany in 2016 she hopes to enter a Master s Degree program in either Museum Education or German. I m really interested in Museum Education and making art and cultural resources available to the public so ideally I would love to be in that sector. Camille Ferrer is minoring in Chemistry and laying the foundation for a career in art conservation. This summer she ll be looking for an internship, and after graduation will 7

8 apply to Master s Degree programs in art conservation. Jesse Magnifico is pursuing a minor in Arts Administration in addition to his major in Art History. Over the summer, he ll focus on growing his company, Dustcovery Co. - a venture created to preserve, flip, and repurpose lost antiques and relics, while preserving their nostalgic and artful history for others to enjoy. Jesse is looking forward to bringing Dustcovery Co. to many vintage fairs and bazaars in the surrounding area, while also introducing a company website in the near future Dustcovery.com. In addition, Jesse will be working on an automotive restoration project -- bringing a classic 1938 Packard back to its original glory. He ll also try to visit various museums over the next few months, including the Clark Institute, MoMA, and The Met grad Tarah Maresh reports: Over the last year, I took a new job at Night Shift Brewing, where I am now heading up our Barrel Society program, keeping track of cellared inventory, planning events, and naming beers after painters (Picasso and Hogarth are the first two releases of that series!) I majored in Humanities, with a focus on Art History, which I'm sure would have been much different if I'd had more than four semesters at Suffolk (Art History all the way)! Before I returned to school to finish my degree, I traveled quite frequently, but had to take a bit of a break to focus on studies. Now that I've graduated, I will keep my job at the brewery, but get back to traveling! I've got a trip to Nova Scotia planned for late June, and a return to my second home, Oxford, England, in September. I'm not really sure what my plans are other than to travel. Coming back to school was less about getting a degree to get a job, and more about getting an education, and completing a personal goal. I'd love to be able to combine my love of travel, art, and beer one day, maybe a beer and art themed tour around the world! But for now, I'll name beers and crash art history classes and high teas! 2015 graduate Elisa Walker is spending the month of June in Paris. When she returns she'll be working part time at the Gibson House Museum on Beacon St. (come for a tour!) before enrolling at BU for her Master's Degree in the History of Art and Architecture.
