3 1. Introduction Our Art Programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach provides a positive environment for youth to learn and grow. The purpose of our Arts Program is to not only build great artists, but to build confidence and self-esteem, boost creativity and critical thinking. Our philosophy is to be the unique you, a place where Club members can celebrate and express their individuality. The idea behind all of the activities run by this department is not about perfection or being a highly skilled artist, it s about the process, the emotion and feeling, perseverance and resiliency. It s a space where our Club members can come and relax, de-stress from their school worries, a space where they can work through their emotions through the medium of Art. Our Art Room implements a wide and varied curriculum which is aimed at sparking the interest and creativity of all Club members, regardless of age, gender or ability. Our Art department does not work in silo, it works across a number of programs and departments for example STEM, ECO Smart, and My. Future. We work in partnership with many community groups and agencies, to give our Club members high quality education, social and emotion experience, to help them succeed and grow. We work with organizations such as Laguna Beach Art Museums, Festival of the Arts, and Aliso Viejo City, as well as individual local artists. The delivery of our activities changes each day to ensure Club members are experiencing all aspect of art. The activities that are delivered include: Fine Art (Painting and Drawing) Ceramics/Pottery Digital Art (including animation and stop motion) Photography Music makers Craft Sculpture Mixed Media Mural The main outcome of all this activities is to create empowerment and choice. There is a designate project that Club members can create or be part of, or they have the option to work on their own individual masterpiece in which they have the freedom to use any material within the art room. This method of delivery has helped us engage those members who originally had zero interest in the art room, but where those that most needed this artistic yet therapeutic outlet. The Art team gives Club members different perspectives, experiences and supports them. Ensuring they nurture, encourage and champion each Club member to do their best, to create individuality and confidence. All members of team also are part of our OJP mentoring program. The Art department fosters a collaborative environment where Club members work together. There is no failure, right or wrong answer, it s all about unleashing your imagination. Therefore, members feel supported and celebrated by their peers through programs such as Member of the Month for the Art department, and having work exhibited in the Art & Nature Show, Image Makers and Fine Art Show.
4 We also foster supportive relationships with parents, by opening our exhibits as family fun nights. Parents and carers are given the opportunity to celebrate their child s creativity and achievements. 2. Allowing their art to be elevated, respected, and celebrated amongst themselves. 4.2 Arts for All Impact Survey This year is our third year in implementing our Arts Survey. The survey is created to measure the social and emotional impact of our Arts program. This demonstrates the work staff have achieved in meeting our 2017 goal in of increasing building confidence and risk taking in Art.

On average there has been an increase of 10-15% in each area. 5. Success Story C is a quiet and unique member, kind of sticks to herself, and isn t necessarily a part of the popular members. I emphasized a member guided project series with painting. I wanted the paintings of their peers to guide the following project requirements. C made a mountain scape painting using dots (or pointillism). Members were drawn to her painting during an informal critique and her artwork, became the predecessor for the next round of paintings that members made. This is the way artists naturally work. It was nice to see the excitements of each member taking ownership of the project specifications and it was nice to see C artwork be elevated and respected. This was witnessed by seeing the sense pride on her face when this happened. Cailtin Reller (Art Director) The Art Director witnessed friends coming together while working on the collaborative wall and floor mural. Members were engaged and having fun, but also very serious about their part in the mural. It
10 was a successful project because it allowed for uninhibited exploration of materials and it also facilitated a place where members could collaborate. E has really begun to shine in the art room. She has always been very shy, soft spoken and timid. She began attending to photo club and since then has been speaking up & making art work non-stop. She participates in the daily activities and really seems to be gaining confidence and pride in herself. Cailin Reller (Art Director) 6. Art in Action
