3 State Graduation Requirements Ohio House Bill 487 established new requirements for earning a high school diploma in Ohio. To earn a high school diploma, you must complete courses and meet the requirements of one of the following options: Ohio s State Tests Industry Credential and Workforce Readiness College/Career Readiness Tests

4 State Graduation Requirements Ohio s State Tests Earn at least 18 points on seven end-of-course state tests. End-of-course tests are: Algebra I Geometry American Government American History English I English II Biology

5 State Graduation Requirements Ohio s State Tests (continued) You must have a minimum number of points in the following academic areas: Math (4 points) English (4 points) Social Studies/Science (6 points)

6 State Graduation Requirements Industry Credential and Workforce Readiness Earn a minimum of 12 points by receiving a State Board of Education-approved, industry-recognized credential and earn a 13 on WorkKeys, a work-readiness test. The state of Ohio will pay one time for you to take the WorkKeys test. LHS will be offering the following credential starting in the school year: Microsoft Certification

7 State Graduation Requirements College and Career Readiness Tests Earn the remediation-free scores on either: ACT SAT English- 18 or higher Writing- 430 or higher Mathematics- 22 or higher Mathematics- 520 or higher Reading- 22 or higher Reading- 450 or higher Students will be able to take a free ACT at LHS during the spring of their Junior year.

8 District Graduation Requirements Students must earn a total of 21 credits 4 credits of English 4 credits of Social Studies including: 1 credit of World History 1 credit of American History 1 credit of American Government ½ credit of Economics ½ credit of Global Studies 3 units of Science including: 1 credit of Life Science 1 credit of Physical Science 1 credit of Advance Study (ex. Anatomy) 4 credits of Mathematics ½ credit of Health ½ credit of Physical Education ½ credit of Integrated Computer 4.5 credits of electives which must include one (1) credit from the areas: Applications, Business, Technology, Fine Arts and/or Foreign Language

9 Scheduling The scheduling process will begin during the spring of each academic year. Students will receive a scheduling sheet and will have to return it to the guidance office with a parent/guardian signature. If you would like to schedule an appointment with me to go over scheduling options for next year, please call (330) , ext. 179.

10 Credits and GPA Students will be able to earn credits through the following means: 1.0 Credit = All Year Course 0.50 = Semester Course 0.25 = 9 Weeks Course *Although Physical Education courses are a semester course, they are worth 0.25 credits All credits earned will be calculated in a student s GPA

11 Courses Required Courses in 9th grade: LAN090- Language Arts I SOC100- World History PED090- Physical Education (One Semester) HED090- Health (One Semester) BUS900- Integrated Computer Applications (One Semester) IND900- Industrial Technology (One Semester) *Each student will also choose 1 Math and 1 Science

12 Courses Electives: ART090- Art I CBI101- Career Based Intervention 9/10 MUS091- Band I OJT100- Occupational Job Training MUS092- Choir I JOUR- Journalism SPN090- Spanish I SH- Study Hall ITL091- Italian I CAD125- Computer-Aided Drafting I FIT101- Fitness for Life

13 Withdrawal Policy Students are given the first 2 weeks of school to make any scheduling changes. If a student wishes to drop a course after the 2 week window, it will be done with a WF grade, which will become part of the student s permanent record and will be treated like an F when computing GPA and class rank. The principal will make the final decision in all cases.

14 Valedictorian/Salutatorian A graduating Senior must meet the following criteria to be eligible to be named Valedictorian or Salutatorian: Minimum of 28 credits 4 Credits of English including Advanced English II, III, and IV 5 credits of Math including Calculus 4 credits of Science including Physical Science, Biology, and Physics, and at least one of the following: Anatomy and Physiology or Chemistry If students were exempt from Physical Science, they will need to take another science in place of it. 4 credits of Social Studies 3 credits of 1 Foreign Language or 2 credits each of 2 Foreign Languages A student must enter LHS by their Junior year and attend 4 consecutive semesters to be eligible.

15 Organizations, clubs, and activities Art Club Italian Club Spanish Club SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) PANDA Wellness Club Drama Club English Festival Envirothon Academic Challenge Volunteer opportunities are announced via morning/afternoon announcements and/or by club advisors

16 sports/eligibility Athletes must carry a 1.0 GPA Athlete must pass 5 credits of OHSAA eligibility standards Eligibility is based upon 9 week grades 8th graders going into 9th grade must pass 75% of their 4th 9 weeks course to be eligible

17 National Honor Society A student s cumulative GPA will be calculated at the end of the 2nd 9 weeks of their Junior year. Students will need to have a cumulative GPA of a 3.4 in order to apply to NHS. Application Process Students who are eligible (based on cumulative GPA) to apply for NHS, will receive a letter and application telling them that they may apply. This will happen during the 3rd quarter of junior year. Students must submit a completed application with Letter of recommendation from a coach, advisor (not a teacher) displaying leadership abilities. provide documentation of 25 service hours

18 School support services Students who need extra academic support can receive the following services: Teacher Tutoring (offered before or after school depending on the teacher s schedule) Peer Tutoring YSU Tutors (available during the Fall and Spring)

19 Preparing for education after high school Standardized Assessments- ACT and SAT Keep a log of level of involvement in extracurricular activities, clubs and organizations Keep a log of volunteer hours Campus Visits Transcripts FAFSA Scholarships Recommendation Letters

20 Parent involvement Make a plan in selecting your child s courses for each year in high school Support good study habits Promote your child s involvement in participating in extracurricular activities, clubs and organizations Use progressbook to monitor your child s academic progress It s not too early to start exploring college and career options with your child (e.g.; colleges, trade schools, etc.) Please ask us for help if you need it in regards to academic, college/trade school or career planning
