2 SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE Dear Hamilton High Graduates, Graduating from Hamilton High School is something you should be proud of, and it is a reflection of your dedication to education, your hard work, and your determination. While you will soon be leaving Hamilton High, you will not leave empty handed. You will leave with the friendships you have formed, the knowledge you have learned, and the lasting memories you have made. Graduation is not the end of your journey though. It is the first chapter of the novel you are about to write. By using the skills you have learned at Hamilton High - like the ability to think critically and to communicate effectively through writing and speaking, you will easily fill the pages of your novel. Always remember that you are the author of your story. So dream big. Regardless of what career you pursue or what your future holds, be passionate about what you do. The characters in a novel are what make it interesting and meaningful, so surround yourself with positive ones and care about them. They in turn will care about you. Finally, all novelists experience writer s block. It is inevitable. You will be confronted with some obstacle that seems insurmountable. This is when you call upon your perseverance and grit. After all, you are Hamilton High graduates, and if I know one thing, I have learned that they do not give up. Thank you for being a unique part of the Big Blue family. 3 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Dear Parents, Congratulations! Graduation from high school is an exciting event for the graduate and their family members. I am sure that you are very proud. This booklet has been designed to provide answers to questions most commonly asked by seniors and their parents. Included are dates, times, and activities that lead up to graduation. Please review this material carefully and use it as a reference during your spring planning. Candidates for graduation must complete all academic requirements and pass all parts of the Ohio Graduation Test in order to participate in commencement on May 25 th. It is imperative that we work together to ensure that your senior successfully completes all academic requirements. As principal of Hamilton High School, I also want to extend congratulations to our young people. High school graduation represents the completion of many years of work. 4 COMMENCEMENT INFORMATION Commencement will will be be held held on on Saturday, Wednesday, May May 2325 rdth at Millett Hall, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Commencement will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Doors will open to the public at 4:30 p.m. Graduates should arrive no later than 5:30 p.m. and report directly to their assigned line and stay there. Information regarding how and where to check in, march lines, seating, etc. will be given to graduates at practice on May 19 th. Special parking and seating are available for handicapped guests (note location on map.) Tickets for commencement are not required. Ample seating is available. Diplomas: Students will receive the diploma cover on the stage. The actual diploma will be given out after the ceremony. Graduates should report to the arena (where seated) after exiting commencement and locate his/her Advisory Teacher. Graduates can pick up his/her diploma the next day if not retrieved on graduation night. 6 THE CEREMONY The Hamilton High School commencement will be conducted with The Hamilton High School commencement will be conducted with dignity and respect. Graduates, parents, and guests are reminded that commencement is a ceremony, not a celebration. Participation in commencement is optional. Graduates wishing to participate in the ceremony should adhere to these guidelines: DRESS Ladies: Should wear dressy attire/dress clothes. Gentlemen: Should wear dressy attire/dress clothes. ALL : No purses, cameras, etc. Press your gown with a very cool iron. Wear your hat forward with the point almost between your eyebrows; tassel on the right. Do not write on caps or put anything on the top; otherwise, the faculty in charge will take the cap. DO NOT CHEW GUM. PICTURES: May be taken from the seating area only. No one will be permitted on the floor except graduates and commencement personnel. A photograph will be taken of each graduate as he/she receives a diploma. Proofs will be mailed to parents within 10 days of commencement and orders can be made by mail.

7 THE CEREMONY PARENTS PARENTS PLEASE PLEASE NOTE: NOTE: Graduates ONLY in the line area prior to commencement. Small babies and small children should be left at home since their crying might be distracting to the rest of the guests. All guests attending should remain in their seats throughout the ceremony. No food should be brought into Millett Hall. There should be no undue cheering or applause, for all parents want to hear the name of their graduate. Air horns are prohibited at Millett Hall. Allow plenty of time to get to Millett Hall as we expect a lot of traffic and you will not want to miss the start of the ceremony. Any graduate participating in, or contributing to, inappropriate behavior during commencement will be promptly removed from the arena by Oxford police. Any graduate choosing not to participate in commencement may pick up his/her diploma the next business day at the high school after 9:00 a.m. No diplomas will be issued before then. 8 COMMENCEMENT REQUIREMENTS All seniors and early graduates must must have have completed completed all all academic and other requirements in order to participate in the Hamilton High School commencement. ALL PARTS OF THE OHIO GRADUATION TEST MUST BE PASSED TO PARTICIPATE IN GRADUATION A student who fails a second semester class that is needed to fulfill a graduation requirement will not be permitted to participate in commencement, even if the credit can be made up in summer school. Commencement is reserved only for those students who have successfully met all graduation requirements. Any senior having a fee to pay, a book to return, or any other obligations, must have it cleared by 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24 th in order to receive a diploma the night of graduation. Fees must be paid to Mrs. Grantz in the reception office. (Cash only after May 1 st.) Seniors wishing to participate in commencement must attend rehearsal on Thursday, May 19 th at 8:45 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. Only absences from rehearsal that are validated by a physician s statement indicating the student to be physically unable to participate in rehearsal will be deemed excused. Rehearsal will last approximately two hours.

9 GRADUATION THIS-N-THAT Going Going through practice does not necessarily assure you you of of graduation. Your grades and behavior remain factors. Any senior who contributes in any way to the disruption of the normal school operation during the final days of the school year will be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to being denied participation in commencement on May 25 th. Caps and gowns will be distributed at the high school during lunches by Jostens. Caps and gowns ordered directly through Jostens must be placed and paid in full. If you have questions, please contact Jostens (513) Any cap and gown orders not paid in full will be returned to Jostens (513) Only honor cords, Honor Society sashes and medallions (distributed for commencement) may be worn on or around the graduation attire. The cap and gown may not be altered (except for fitting) in any manner. It is strongly recommended that graduates do not bring purses or any other items to carry during the ceremony.

10 IMPORTANT SENIOR EVENTS * Senior Exam Schedule Tuesday, May 17 th Periods 2, 3 and 4 Wednesday, May 18 th Periods 5, 6 and 7 Thursday, May 19 th Period 1 Seniors only need to be in attendance during their scheduled exam times. Seniors will be dismissed after graduation rehearsal on Thursday. Seniors wishing to participate in commencement on May 25 th must attend and participate in rehearsal on Thursday, May 19 th. Rehearsal will be held after Advisory at 8:45 a.m. in the high school auditorium. ALL SENIORS are to report to Advisory at 8:45 a.m. to receive their line-up card and information sheet. Early Graduates, HOPE, Butler Tech. and Home Instruction students need to report to the reception area desk to find out the assigned room number for an assigned advisory. Remember, practice is mandatory!

11 REQUIREMENTS TO PURCHASE A TICKET: REQUIREMENTS TO PURCHASE A TICKET: SENIOR PROM Attendance: No more than 4 unexcused absences (3 unexcused Tardies = 1 unexcused absence) Behavior: No suspensions or alternative placements Credits: Must be on track to graduate (18.5 credits) PROM- Prom is Saturday, April, 23 rd from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at Lake Lyndsay Lodge. For your safety, parents of absent students will be called after 9:00 p.m. Students are not permitted to leave the dance until 11:00 p.m. DIRECTIONS TO LAKE LYNDSAY: Take North Third Street to Augspurgcr Road in New Miami and turn right. Go eight miles to Lake Lyndsay on the right. OR Go north on Route 4 and turn left on Liberty -Fairfield Road. Cross the bridge and turn left on Augspurgcr Road. Go two miles to Lake Lyndsay on left. TICKETS: $35 per person. Tickets can only be purchased by eligible Hamilton High seniors. Guests can be from 9th grade through 20 years old. ID must be presented at the time of purchase and upon entry at the prom. All requirements must be met in order to purchase a ticket (attendance, behavior and credits check website for more information). Seniors MUST provide their phone number and the phone number of their date at the time of ticket purchase. Price includes admission to the prom. Tickets will be on sale inside the Cafeteria during 5 th period (Monday- Friday, April 11 th April ). NO TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR. NO CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED. CASH ONLY PLEASE.
