1 SOCIAL STUDIES PROGRAM The Social Studies program at Rondout Valley is designed to encourage responsible citizenship and to promote basic understandings of nations, peoples, and cultures as well as the history, traditions and impact of the United States as a world power. The Social Studies sequence incorporates an interdisciplinary approach to increase awareness and knowledge of local, national and international affairs while giving recognition to the increasing interdependence of the nations of the world. GLOBAL HISTORY I Regents/ Consultant Model GLOBAL HISTORY I (HONORS) GLOBAL HISTORY II Regents / Global Studies II ASI HONORS GLOBAL HISTORY II UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT (HONORS/AP) UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT/ Consultant Model SOCIAL STUDIES 12/ Consultant Model PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT AP COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS; AP AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS AP EUROPEAN HISTORY RACISM, CLASSISM & SEXISM HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL ART HISTORY I ART HISTORY II LAW STUDIES THE TURBULENT 60 s/21 st CENTURY SURVIVAL/ Consultant Model ECONOMICS GLOBAL HISTORY I Regents (223)/GLOBAL STUDIES I CM (233) Offered: Grade 9 This course encompasses a chronological survey of the history of the Ancient Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia. Interactions and linkages among nations and peoples are explored within specific time periods to ascertain how the past influences the present. GLOBAL HISTORY I (HONORS) Prerequisite: students must have a 90 average, score 85% or better on CTBS, and have the recommendation of their 8 th grade teacher. Offered: Grade 9 This course is designed for highly motivated students who have met the requirements for admission to this program and intend to take Advanced Placement History course before graduation. The course will cover the same content featured in the Regents level course with additional enrichment, materials and activities. The honor level student will be expected to do
2 work beyond the basic Regents course requirements and demonstrate higher levels or critical thinking and writing. GLOBAL HISTORY II Regents (224)/ Global Studies II ASI (234) Prerequisite: Regents Global Studies I Offered: Grade 10 This course is a continuation of the 9 th grade course designed to develop a global perspective for students. Interactions and linkages among nations and peoples are explored within specific time periods to ascertain how the past influences the present. The course highlights themes in a political and chronological context. The areas studied include Western Europe and Eastern Europe, including Russia and the Modern Middle East. THE FINAL EXAMINATION IN THE COURSE IS THE NYS REGENTS.. Passing this exam is required for graduation. HONORS GLOBAL HISTORY II Prerequisite: completion of Global Studies I Honors with an average of 85 or higher AND teacher recommendation OR Global Studies I Regents with an average of 90 or higher AND teacher recommendation. Like Global Studies I Honors, this course is designed for the highly motivated student who is planning to take Advanced Placement American History during the junior year in high school. The content of the course is the same as the Regents level course with an increased emphasis on writing and research skills. The final examination in this course is the NYS Regents exam in Global Studies that covers all of the material from grades 9 and 10. UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT (HONORS/AP) Prerequisite: Global Studies I and II and 85 or better on Global Regents exam and teacher approval Offered: Grade 11 This course covers the history of the U.S. from the colonial period to the present. In addition to the text, students analyze issues with document-based questions, engage in competitive debates and devise creative assignments. This course qualifies students for the Advanced Placement College Board examination in May. NOTE: The final examination for this course is the NYS Regents in U.S. History and Government. If students do not take the AP exam, they will be awarded Honors credit. UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT Regents - 225/ CM Prerequisite: Global Studies I and II Regents Offered: Grade 11 This course focuses on a chronological history of the U.S. from the post-civil War era to the present. Students use primary source materials, supplementary readings and the library to aid in the development of important understandings and generalizations. The final examination in this course is the NYS Regents exam. Passing this exam is required of all students. SOCIAL STUDIES /CM - 236
3 Prerequisite: completion of U.S. History and Government Offered: Grade 12 PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT 1 SEMESTER This one semester course emphasizes the process of effective interaction between citizens and government. It encourages student participation in the processes of government and politics. ECONOMICS 1 SEMESTER This one semester course deals with a survey of the fundamental concepts of economics with special emphasis upon the operation of the American system of free enterprise. Students also explore economic issues in today s world. Students should enroll for Social Studies 12. The order in which the topics will be taught is the choice of the teacher. AP COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS; AP AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS 222 Offered: Grades 11 & 12 Prerequisite: 85 or better average in SS courses and/or teacher recommendation. This course may be used to satisfy the 12 th grade social studies requirement. This is a combined course with two semester level AP courses taught in succession (fall and spring). Completion of the two courses affords students the possibility of receiving 6 college level credits following the successful completion of the AP exams in May. The AP course in comparative Government and Politics introduces students to the fundamental concepts used by political scientists to study the processes and outcomes of politics in a variety of country settings. The AP course in American Government and Politics is designed to give students an analytical perspective on government and politics in the U.S. and includes topics such as: constitutional underpinnings of the U. S., political beliefs and behaviors, political parties, interest groups, mass media, civil rights and civil liberties. AP EUROPEAN HISTORY 216 Prerequisite: Successful completion of Global History 10 Offered: 11th and 12th This course is a study of European history from 1450 to the present. Students will develop an understanding of some of the principal themes in modern European history; an ability to analyze historical evidence; and an ability to analyze and to express historical understanding in writing. The course qualifies students for the AP College Board exam given in May. **Course will be offered based on student enrollment, and teacher availability. RACISM, CLASSISM & SEXISM 253 Prerequisite: 11 th and 12 th grade class standing and successful completion of Global History and Geography I & II, and English 9 & 10 This course introduces students to ethnic and racial relations and conflict in the United States. The primary goal of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the difficulties and conflicts our society faces in the twenty first century with regards to racism, classism and sexism. This course will analyze the connections between race, class and gender and provide students with a historical awareness that will enhance their understanding of how history has shaped our contemporary dialogues on welfare, civil rights, affirmative action, immigration and the criminal justice system.
4 HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL 256 Full year course Prerequisite: Successful completion of 10 th grade Global History and Geography; submission of an essay that answers the question, Why do you want to take a course called: History of Rock N Roll? This full year course is a Social Studies elective. The course begins at the turn of the 20 th century with the early development of rock and roll brought by the ending of slavery and the initial stages of the African-American civil rights movements. Through biographies, political and economic studies of musicians, leaders and corporations, students will learn how popular music has been shaped and shaped political and economic policies of the US government. The course will include studies of Robert Johson, Elvis, Dylan, the Beatles, the 60 s, Led Zeppelin, heavy metal, glam rock, and rap and culminate with a final examination that will encourage students to see the impact music has made on popular social movements for political action. ART HISTORY I 257 ½ credit Prerequisite: 11 th or 12 th and successful completion of Global History and Geography I & II and English 9 & 10 This course is designed to provide the same benefits to the high school students as those offered by an introductory course in art history. Students will examine the art and architecture of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa from the prehistoric ear through the Gothic period. Focus will be on the visual qualities of images and the structural properties of buildings as they relate to a particular cultural context. Students will be able to analyze the stylistic features of individual works of art and relate these qualities to the larger historical context. It is expected that students are independent thinkers and capable of reading at a college level. ART HISTORY II ½ credit Prerequisite: 11 th and 12 th graders and successful completion of Global History and Geography I & II and English 9 & 10. Completion of Art History I is strongly recommended. This course continues and builds off of Art History I and surveys the fine arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture of the Western world from the Renaissance through the post-modern period. Students will earn to use analysis of art work as a tool to understanding the role of art and artists in society and their relationship to either economic, political and cultural contexts. It is expected that students are independent thinkers and capable of reading at a college level. LAW STUDIES 215 Offered: Grades 11 & 12 Prerequisite: Completion of 10 th grade Global Studies; this course may be used to satisfy the 12 th grade social studies requirement. Law Studies is a two tiered course designed to give students a broad overview regarding the origins of the modern legal system and a working knowledge of both the civil and criminal arms of our court system. The semester will focus on the essential legal concepts related to the American legal system and the preparation and presentation of mock trials. Students will
5 research and then argue cases before and against each other in a simulated courtroom setting. The second semester will focus on a review, analysis, and reenactment of key Supreme Court cases and their ramification of the American judicial system through history. An economics unit of the class will focus on the courts role in supporting/regulating the American market economy and the principles basic to understanding the American Dream economically and judicially. THE TURBULENT 60 s/21 st CENTURY SURVIVAL 255/CT Prerequisite: 11 th /12 th graders. Must have successfully completed Global History and US History (may be concurrent). 10 th graders admitted with permission of instructors and recommendation from 9 th grade teacher. Part I (fall semester) provides an in-depth look at the social, cultural, and political issues generated by one of the most powerful decades in American history: 1960 s. Cold War America faced many challenges from the civil rights movement and the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK, and Malcolm X to the counter culture created by the Vietnam War. In addition to civil rights, student protests, and women s rights movements, we will consider major changes in popular culture, especially television, movies and music. This was a revolutionary time in American history that echoes in the identity of America today. Part II (spring semester) focuses on current world crises that threaten your world. Poverty, scarcity of natural resources, population growth, energy and climate change, AIDS/pandemics, unequal wealth distribution, power of multinational corporations, weapons of mass destruction, genocide, terrorism, racism, sexism, and anti-semitism all plaque the 21 st century. While the 1960 s fostered a belief that people could change the world, that feeling was lost in subsequent generations. The goal of this course is to demonstrate how students can become change agents within their communities and beyond, rejuvenating the spirit and action of the 60 s. ** Course will be offered 2009/2010 based upon board approval.
