7 International Baccalaureate Education Continuum The Diploma Programme for students aged 16 to 19 started in 1968 with first examinations in 1970 and is now offered by 2,451 IB World Schools. Academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and life beyond. Addresses the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The programme has gained recognition and respect from the world s leading universities.

It is a broad-based two-year programme that aims to encourage students to be knowledgeable and inquiring, but also caring and compassionate. There is a strong emphasis on encouraging students to develop intercultural understanding, open-mindedness, and the attitudes necessary for them to respect and evaluate a range of points of view.

14 UNIVERSITIES ABOUT THE I.B. DIPLOMA PROGRAMME RAY IVANY - President and Vice-Chancellor, Acadia University I am an unabashed fan of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program ( ). My enthusiasm for IB is based on two observations from my career in higher education. First, the inherent intensity of the IB curriculum produces not only subject matter expertise, but it also develops significant discipline, time management and critical thinking skills. Second, the high school to university transition remains challenging and many students experience a GPA decline in their first term/year. In my experience, IB graduates often stand out in their ability to make a smooth and successful transition to university and, notably, maintain higher GPA levels of excellence than most other university students.

15 UNIVERSITIES ABOUT THE I.B. DIPLOMA PROGRAMME University of Toronto: Applicants in their final year of the diploma will be considered with predicted results of 28 or higher. More competitive programs require higher predicted results. Transfer credit towards arts, science or commerce/management programs is granted for some IB higher level subjects with a final grade of 5 or higher. McMaster University: Applicants who have completed or will be completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma will be considered for admission to Level I, provided the completed diploma program includes the subject requirements of the program desired. University of Western Ontario: IB applicants who have successfully completed the IB Diploma and meet Western s admission criteria, are eligible for transfer credit consideration for each Higher Level subject with a score of 5 or higher. Queen s University: Up to 18 transfer credit units are granted to candidates for Higher Level (HL) subjects in which a final grade of five or higher is achieved (six for Applied Science). For HL subjects in which the course content closely parallels the content of a specific first-year Queen s course, specific credit is awarded.

16 NOVA SCOTIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Universities believe that IB Diploma graduates will perform better at university than students graduating from regular programs. The combination of critical thinking, research, and writing skills learned in the IB program enables students to succeed in the university learning environment. Statistics reflect this performance: IB students who registered directly into second-year courses scored an average of 7% to 12% higher than their classmates (based on UBC study). In a recent study, the University of Florida showed that as IB students took more advanced and more difficult university courses, the performance gap widens further. The IB graduation transcript is a model of consistency with world IB averages, varying by only fractions over the past 20 years. IB graduates are snapping up more and more of the traditional scholarships, as well as benefiting from a vast array of financial incentives reserved exclusively for them.

17 FACTS AND OPINIONS (from the Nova Scotia Department of Education website) 88% of IB graduates in North America & 96% of IB graduates in Canada graduate from university within 6 yrs; only 58% of North American students complete it within 6 yrs. Ivy League school admission rates of IB students vs. non-ib students (Brown University: IB 17.4% vs. 8.7%; Columbia University: IB 13.6% vs. 6.9%; Princeton University: IB 17.3% vs. 8.4%). One major Ontario university recently reported that only 27% of first year scholarship recipients maintain their scholarships, whereas almost all of the recipients who were IB Diploma graduates retained their scholarships through to graduation. "Diploma Program students are well-rounded, multifacted, multiskillled and have studied in depth. They have good time-management skills. They score higher than students in other national systems, and the IB score is worldwide the same measure." - Hrilina Lock, undergrad admissions, London School of Economics We view IB students as well prepared to succeed at university, and like many of our counterparts across Canada, we want to position ourselves as the university of choice for IB Diploma graduates. DIPLOMA PROGRAMME PROS AND CONS ADVANTAGES: Solid and broad-based university preparation which pays off with higher university grades and maintained scholarships through the course of studies. Well-rounded educational program (including French, Extended Essay, CAS, TOK ). Most students get to the program of their first choice. Most students get university credits for their high school work (Higher Level subjects only for parks of 5-7, i.e %). Dual diploma program (OSSD and IB Diploma). Admissions based on best performance. Students will always get to a university program (even the ones who did not get the IB Diploma). The more challenging the program, the greater the chances of doing well at university, and achieving future success. MISCONCEPTIONS: I.B. D.P. is for students who would like to study abroad. Ontario university stream is much easier that the I.B. D.P. DISADVANTAGES: Less variety of courses in the I.B. D.P.
