1 ADULT EDUCATION 7510 The Board of Trustees recognizes that most persons in our society are lifelong learners through necessity, as well as by choice. Adult Education is the institution available to adult members of the community, and a prime agent for actualizing positive change among people The program goals and instructional objectives are found in the Anaheim Union High School District Key To Learning and are aligned with the California Department of Education criteria, including state standards and frameworks for adult education. Major Goals: 1. Provide education readily accessible to community in neighborhood classrooms. 2. Provide programs needed in our community in the ten adult education program areas including: Courses leading to a high school diploma Programs to increase interest and competency in citizenship Courses designed to improve English language Classes in parent education Classes for handicapped adults Classes in vocational training Classes related to special community needs 3. 2 Provisions for Instruction: The Anaheim Union High School District adult education program provides: Enrollment A comprehensive program to meet the needs and desires of the community. A variety of courses for members of the community in such areas of academic instruction, basic education, business education, community services, parent education, career technical training, arts and crafts, and classes for substantially disabled adults. An academic program that enables adult members of the community to earn a high school diploma. Counseling services to guide students in developing a program of study that is in keeping with their educational and occupational needs. High interest course of cultural significance. Independent study is an educational option. Adults shall have first priority for enrollment in any adult education classes, provided they enroll during the regular enrollment period. For the purposes of these programs, adults include persons age 18 or older or other persons not concurrently enrolled in a regular high school program. High school students may not enroll in the Anaheim Union High School District Adult Education Program until they have reached 18 years of age and their scheduled graduation date has passed before they are able to complete the requirements needed to earn a high school diploma. High school seniors may be concurrently enrolled in the Anaheim Union High School District Adult Education Program provided they are maintaining a six-period day at the comprehensive site and are repeating classes needed for graduation, which cannot be scheduled during the regular school day. Second semester juniors are eligible to enroll in the program based upon space availability. Requirements for second semester juniors are the same as for a high school senior. Before concurrently enrolling in an adult education class, the high school student shall complete a documented counseling session that includes his/her parent/guardian and a certificated representative of the high school. 4 [Formerly in Policy 8538, Admission] ADULT EDUCATION 7510-R CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT EDUCATION PROGRAM Students who fail required high school courses in curriculum areas may make-up failed courses during their senior year in the concurrent enrollment education program. Second semester juniors are eligible to enroll in the program based upon space availability, Students must be enrolled in a district high school or alternative education program for full time. The enrollment form is completed by the high school counselor after a counseling session. The parent/ guardian is required to accompany the student to the concurrent enrollment education program counseling/registration meeting which is conducted by a counselor Parent/guardian and student signatures are required for entry. These adult education courses are open to adults and concurrently enrolled high school seniors and/or second semester juniors. Courses are generally held at night to accommodate working adults and high school students. Adult education classes are not allowed to supplant regular high school classes. 5 SCHOOL YEAR An Adult Education diploma will be issued to students who have successfully completed the following: acquired 200 credits completed all required courses passed all sections of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). achieved a total 2.0 grade point average (GPA) met the computer education requirement. earned credits in the following courses: ENGLISH (or English Language Development (ELD) as appropriate) English 1 English 2 English 3 English 4 MATHEMATICS (1 year Algebra 1 mandated) SCIENCE (1 year Life Science/1 year Physical Science mandated) HEALTH 40 CREDITS 20 CREDITS 5 CREDITS COMPUTER EDUCATION (This course does not fulfill the Career Education requirement.) 5 CREDITS HISTORY/SOCIAL SCIENCE WORLD HISTORY/CULTURE/GEOGRAPHY US HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY PRINCIPLES OF AM DEMOCRACY (GOVT) ECONOMICS FINE ARTS OR FOREIGN LANGUAGE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CAREER EDUCATION ELECTIVES 5 credits 5 credits 10 CREDITS 20 CREDITS 10 CREDITS Residence requirement of at least 15 credits must be earned in Adult Education in order to be eligible for a diploma.
