VIDEO 9: CREATING YOUR FOUR YEAR PLAN This script and slide view can be used as you view Video 9 in the Foundation High School Program series. CREATING YOUR FOUR YEAR PLAN Guidance & Counseling Welcome to the final video in the FHSP series. This video will help guide you as you create your four year plan and complete online registration for the next school year.
Slide 2 STEPS IN THE PROCESS Step 1 View Videos & Other Foundation Materials High School Program Video 1 Step 2 Select an Endorsement Understanding and Selecting an Endorsement Video 8 Step 3 Design Four Year Plan Creating Your Four Year Plan Video 9 Step 4 Submit Registration Enter Information into Career Cruising Career Cruising Videos 2-6 Review Endorsements in Parent/Student Guide Complete FHSP Requirement Worksheet Submit Registration Online High School Course Description Guide Identify Courses of Interest Based on Career Clusters Complete Four Year Plan Worksheet Print Registration Document and Submit to Counselor Parent/Student Guide to the FHSP Course Descriptions in HS Course Description Guide In this video, We will focus on four primary steps. First, an overview of videos and other materials available to assist parents and students. Second, how to use this information to select an endorsement you may pursue. Third, designing your four year plan, allowing you to graduate with an endorsement and incorporate courses that meet your interests and career goals. And finally, submitting your registration through the Career Cruising portal.
Slide 3 STEP 1 Let s proceed to step 1
Slide 4 STEP 1 VIEW VIDEOS & OTHER DOCUMENTS Series of Videos Separated into a playlist by content 5 8 Minutes in length Allows you to review sections as needed without watching all sections View videos prior to 8 th grade registration meeting Reference Documents High School Course Description Guide (CDG) Parent/Student Guide to the Foundation High School Program (FHSP) In step one we ask that you review the short videos and other reference documents made available on the guidance and counseling website. The 9 videos are separated into a Playlist by content. Each video is 5 to 8 minutes in length. This allows you to review any section necessary without having to watch the entire video. We do ask that you view the videos prior to the 8 th grade registration meeting with the high school counselors. This will give you a basis of understanding regarding the new Foundation Graduation Plan. The two main reference documents you will use as you complete the registration process are: The High School Course Description Guide. All students have received or will receive a hard copy of the guide. And The Parent/Student Guide to the Foundation HS Program. This is an online guide and is posted on the Guidance and Counseling Website
Slide 5 STEP 2 We are now ready for Step 2 Selecting an Endorsement
Slide 6 STEP 2 SELECTING AN ENDORSEMENT Video Understanding and Selecting an Endorsement Review of all 5 endorsements Possible career fields Types of courses Match your identified clusters with a possible endorsement CTE and Non-CTE You previously viewed the video Understanding and Selecting an Endorsement. If you have not viewed the video, you may want to watch it at this time. The video included a review of all five endorsements, including possible career fields and types of courses available within the endorsement. This information is more well-defined in the Parent/Student Guide In this video, you will learn how to match career clusters identified through CC activities with at least one of the five endorsements
Slide 7 STEP 2 SELECT AN ENDORSEMENT Match your identified clusters with a possible endorsement Your suggested clusters are based on the activities you completed in CC and can be seen in the student account under My Course Plan. Your recommended Career Clusters can be noted here. If necessary you can refer back to the Career Cruising Videos for assistance.
Slide 8 STEP 2 SELECT AN ENDORSEMENT Clusters are grouped into five different endorsements See Video Selecting an Endorsement OR Parent/Student Guide The clusters are grouped into a specific endorsement area.
Slide 9 STEP 2 SELECT AN ENDORSEMENT Explore Courses in Cluster/Endorsement Area Parent/Student Guide to the FHSP Courses by cluster/endorsement CTE/Non CTE Pathways by endorsement High School Course Description Guide (CDG) Now let s explore courses available in the various endorsement areas. The Parent Student Guide has course lists by alpha, cluster, and endorsement. You can easily determine which endorsement a cluster falls into by looking at the course lists in the appendix of the Parent Student Guide. This is a course list of Business and Industry offerings in LISD. The cluster is identified at the far right. The grade level requirement, number of credit slots, and type of course is also indicated here. Lists are available for each endorsement area. There is also a comprehensive alpha list you want to search by course. A description of each course and any prerequisites needed can be found in the HS Course Description Guide
Slide 10 STEP 3 Let s move on to Step 3 Four Year Planning
Slide 11 STEP 3 FOUR YEAR PLANNING After you have identified an endorsement Complete FHSP requirement worksheet (Appendix of Guide) Use Parent/Student Guide to the Foundation High School Program (FHSP) as a reference After you have identified a possible endorsement Use the Foundation requirement Worksheet to make sure you have all the courses necessary for your graduation path. This document can be found in the appendix of the Parent/Student Guide and as a separate document on the guidance and counseling website.
Slide 12 STEP 3 FOUR YEAR PLANNING Ensure all requirements are identified including core courses specific to the endorsement Pages As you are completing the worksheet, use the core course comparison information in the PS guide to make sure you are selecting the appropriate courses for your endorsement. As you can see here, Science requirements for the Multidisciplinary endorsement differ from those of the STEM endorsement. There are also some different core course requirements within an endorsement based on whether the pathway is CTE or NON-CTE
Slide 13 STEP 3 FOUR YEAR PLANNING Transfer courses from FHSP worksheet to Four Year Plan worksheet This is where you will decide which year you will take which courses There are sample plans for each endorsement, both CTE and Non-CTE in the Parent/Student Guide Use STEM as an example Once you have completed your FHSP Worksheet, you can transfer the courses to your four year plan. This is where you will decide which year you will take your courses. This may change throughout your HS career, but this step will give you an idea of how you can fit in all your course requirements and other courses you are interested in. There are sample plans in the Parent Student Guide for each endorsement We are going to work through this process using the STEM Endorsement as an example.
Slide 14 STEP 3 FOUR YEAR PLANNING If you are taking athletics, band, drill team, etc. fill that in for each year Two 9 wk blocks in both fall and spring Fall Athletics Fall Athletics Fall Athletics Spring Athletics Spring Athletics Spring Athletics Fall Athletics Spring Athletics If you plan to participate in Athletics, Band, Drill Team, Choir, Theatre or another activity all four years, go ahead and add those to your four year plan. This will require two quarters or two 9 weeks in the Fall and two in the spring
Slide 15 STEP 3 FOUR YEAR PLANNING Fill in all FHSP core classes for: English Math Science Social Studies LOTE (Languages Other Than English) or Comp Prog English 1 Algebra 1 Biology W. Geo or W. 17 Slide 17 STEP 3 FOUR YEAR PLANNING Make sure that all requirements are checked off in the first column This is just one example of a STEM Endorsement in the Non-CTE Pathway English 1 Algebra 1 Biology French 1 W.
