5 Introduction to the International Baccalaureate The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a nonprofit educational foundation established in IB currently works with over 3500 schools in over 130 countries to develop and offer three challenging programs to over 560,000 students aged 3 to 19 years. IB helps develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.

6 The IBO mission IBO is motivated by a mission to create a better world through education. Mission: The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

11 The IB Diagram The curriculum contains six subject groups and an inner circle of three parts. Higher Level subjects receive 240 hours of instruction over 2 years. Standard level subjects receive 150 hours of instruction over 2 years. TOK receives100 hours of instruction over 2 years EE 8 months to complete CAS 18 months to complete

13 THE INNER CIRCLE The Extended Essay (EE): 4,000 words Offers the opportunity to investigate a research question of individual interest Familiarises students with the independent research and writing skills expected at university

14 Theory of knowledge (TOK): Interdisciplinary Explores the nature of knowledge across disciplines Encouraging an appreciation of other cultural perspectives

15 Creativity, action and service (CAS): Encourages students to be involved in artistic pursuits, sports and community service Education outside the classroom Development of the learner profile Based on Learner outcomes, not hours of completion

16 IB Assessment IB assessment is rigorous, criterion related, consistent and differentiating of student ability. Diploma Programme assessment includes both final examinations and internal assessment undertaken by the teacher to IB criteria and then externally moderated by the IB. The diploma is graded over 45 points giving ample scope to differentiate student ability Marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). All 4,000 examiners are quality checked through a process of moderation. Diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points.

17 IB at SFS A programme that compliments the SFS mission statement Is the well supported at SFS with trained IB teachers and an administration that whole heartedly supports the programme. SFS runs an open programme. This means that students who want to be involved in the programme can. It is important to note that SFS does have guidelines in place about how students choose subjects. Subject selection is a result of close collaboration with the IB coordinators, teachers and counselors.

18 IB at SFS Students are encouraged to make wise decisions. In rare cases students will be not be able to take certain classes. Students may not take 4 HL Subjects SFS offers different but complimentary HS pathways 1. IB Courses : Students take single or multiple IB courses including options form the Inner Circle such as TOK or EE. They complete all Internal Assessments and External IB exams. 2. Full IB Diploma: Students take 3 subjects at Higher level and 3 at standard level plus all three of the Inner Circle, TOK/CAS/EE 3. SFS Diploma: Students take no IB Exams

19 Who is a typical IB candidate? IB is suited to the motivated learner, the curious mind. It is not just for the academically elite; in fact, it is possible that traditional Advanced Placement students may not always be successful in an IB program, as IB has less of an emphasis on book learning and a greater emphasis on higher order thinking skills. A student who is willing to possibly see his or her GPA drop as they develop as an IB learner.

20 Who is a typical IB candidate? A student who is willing to work hard for two full years because they see the benefit of the programme beyond college acceptance and even beyond college credit. A student who is willing to commit to two years of academic rigor. A student who is willing to try an inquiry-based way of learning

21 How well are IB Scores recognized by universities? The IB diploma is widely recognized by the world s leading universities. A database of university admission policies can be found at or recognition@ibo.org Recognition in over 100 countries Recognition by over 2,500 universities Many universities offer scholarships and college credit to IB students, who have successfully completed either individual courses or the Diploma It is important to remember there is a difference between university credit and university recognition. Recognition is well established world wide and currently in the US, University credit is growing.
