1 PANTHER PAWS To empower all students to be responsible lifelong learners. Parent or Guardians, This spring many students at WHS will be participating in state assessments in English Language Arts, Science and Mathematics. The Smarter Balanced assessments of the Washington Comprehensive Assessment Program (WCAP) will determine their achievement level and provide students with an indicator of their predicted readiness to take college-level English and mathematics courses when they begin college. Knowing their achievement level (Levels 1 through 4) early will give students the opportunity to use their junior/senior year to take the courses that will give them the best preparation for college and career success. Students will receive their achievement level results on their Student Score Report in the fall. However, we will have access to your achievement levels electronically within three to four weeks after the Smarter Balanced examinations take place. A significant benefit for students who perform at Achievement Levels 3 or 4 on the Smarter Balanced tests is that they will be able to move directly into credit-bearing college-level courses (levels 100 and above) upon enrollment at any of the 34 community and technical colleges, any of the public baccalaureate institutions, and nine independent colleges in Washington, including Running Start at WVC. This means students will be able to bypass traditional placement tests that are typically given when students enroll in college. Students who pass the ELA and/or the math as a sophomore with a level 3 or 4 will have the opportunity to bank their score and will not need to retake the ELA (English) or Math assessment their junior year. All Sophomore students will take the English Language Assessment (ELA) and Sophomore students who are in Algebra 2 or higher this year will be taking the SBA Math this spring and may bank their level 3 or 4 scores their junior year and not be required to retest. The upcoming test dates chart shows the dates for each assessment, including EOC s. 9th graders will not be testing this year, unless they are currently in Biology and will begin their ELA and math testing during their sophomore year. No math EOC s will be required for 9th 10th graders. All students must pass an ELA, Math & Science assessment for graduation. Please see graduation chart for required graduation assessment scores. More information will be given to students regarding specific dates and times for their test as early as mid March. Please make every effort to schedule appointments or avoid absences as much as possible. If you have any questions regarding any of these assessments please contact our School Assessment Coordinator, Cindy Murie. 3 STAMP Language Proficiency Assessment The STAMP (STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency) test rewards students for proficiency in their first language (Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and/or Hebrew.) The web-based assessment uses real-life questions to evaluate Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening proficiency. The cost is $17.50 and payments are made to the ASB office with EXACT cash or check made out to WSD. Testing is for Spanish unless a request is made in advance for a different language. Students must complete the entire test in one sitting. For more information please see Mrs. Murie in the Admin office. Testing will take place in the LGI on the following dates: Monday March 13, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. Monday May 15th, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. If you have already earned foreign language elective credits, please have your transcript reviewed BEFORE you pay for your STAMP test fee and register for the test. Your counselor or Mrs. Murie can review your transcript. From the Counseling Office Parents, would you like to be more connected to information from the counseling department? 7 From the WHS Library - Encouraging Teenagers to READ! A blog post by Varda Epstein in the Huffington Post had some great suggestions for getting your teen to read. Since reading is key to success in school - and reading Facebook posts and text messages does not count - I thought Ms. Epstein s ideas were worthy of sharing. Put awesome reading material in the bathroom. Really! Give your teen a gift card to a bookstore. Most teens love gift cards and getting to make their own choices. Buy your teen a book on something related to his or her interests. Wrap it up and give it as a present. Everyone likes to unwrap gifts. Declare a No-Tech day! Hold firm. Don t wimp out. Have snacks and good books ready. Give your teen a copy of your all-time favorite book from when you were his/her age. Inscribe the book to your teen. Share with them what made the book so meaningful to you. Epstein, Varda. 5 Tips for Getting Teens to Read.
