of Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts Update to Board of Education January 15, 2013

Purpose Review our Integrated Arts Schools (program and facilities) to determine future needs and sustainability of the program. Background: Previous reviews (2008-09) Long Term Facilities Plan (recommendations) Strategic Plan (access, flexibility)

Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts

Strategic Plan To improve student access to programs & services Consult with the community internally and externally to ascertain satisfaction levels and interests or choices not being met. Implement the recommendations from the Long Range Facilities Plan to ensure equity of access and reduction of waitlists. Improve parental engagement Develop Board tools/resources for public engagement as part of the Communication Plan.

The Program The Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts is a program where creative writing, dance, drama, visual arts, digital arts and music are, wherever possible, integrated into core curriculum. Ideas and concepts are studied across subject and grade boundaries, using skills developed in the arts. As a public school we follow the curriculum set out by the Ministry of Education, the difference is in the way through which curriculum is taught and studied.

Consultation During November and December parents and staff were invited to provide input through an online engagement tool called ThoughtStream. ThoughtStream allows stakeholders and interested individuals to contribute individual thoughts on an issue and then arrive at a shared understanding by collectively assigning value to those thoughts. It is an engagement system that allows you to guide groups to contribute, review and prioritize thoughtful responses to open ended questions.

Consultation - ThoughtStream: We asked: What key things do you like best about the integrated arts program? What are the key challenges with the integrated arts program? What other information do you need or think would be helpful as we consider the integrated arts program? (Note: The Board has been provided complete details of this input.)

NEXT STEPS Determine what further action is required: What additional information is required? Set Board priorities: What should we work on first? Which issue is most serious? If left unresolved, which issue will get worse? What, if any, decisions need to be made? Determine what further analysis is needed. What are we trying to do? What processes will we use? Develop a work plan.
