General Summer School Information Focus The District 117 2017 summer school will offer five types of classes: Credit recovery for failures or incomplete grades. Credit bearing courses for a grade and credit. Enrichment courses. Bridge programs in preparation for the fall. Freshman Academy for selected students. Location Summer School courses will be held at both Antioch and Lakes High Schools. Students who enroll in the Freshmen Academy and Credit Recovery programs will attend their assigned school. All enrichment courses will be scheduled at each respective high school if enrollment allows and where the majority of the enrollment occurs. Registration To register for summer school classes, submit the course selection and registration forms along with payment to either high school s Student Services office. Registration deadlines vary see individual course offerings for details. Tuition and Fees Credit bearing and credit recovery courses are $225 (per.5 credit), except where noted. Full payment of tuition/fees is required at registration. If a student is eligible to change an incomplete from second semester, the cost is $75/week, with an initial deposit of $100. All outstanding school fees must be paid in full prior to enrolling in summer school courses. Class Limits/Cancellations Class registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Early enrollment is important since time slots and openings are limited. Classes without sufficient enrollment may be cancelled. Community High School District 117 students have first priority for enrollment purposes. Refunds No refunds will be made after Tuesday, June 6, 2017. Refunds will be applied toward future registration fees within District 117. Refunds will be issued only if the class is cancelled due to extenuating circumstances as determined by the principal. Attendance/Tardy Policy Summer school is a voluntary regular education program, but students are required to attend all classes. Daily attendance is critical to a student s ability to be successful in summer school. If a student is ill, the parent/guardian should contact the school secretary at the respective buildings before 7:30 A.M. the day of the absence. At Lakes High School the number is 847-838-7623. At Antioch High School the number is 847-838-7762. Repeated tardiness will be cause for dismissal from class without credit or refund. NOTE: Since Summer School hours are limited, daily attendance is extremely important. For The Freshmen Academy a minimum of eighteen attendance days are required to receive credit. As a rule, students will be dropped from ANY summer school classes after two absences due to the compacted time and necessary instructional hours. Please plan vacations and camps accordingly. Exceptions should be appealed to each building principal. Transportation Bus transportation IS provided for ALL Summer Freshman Academy students. Any student displaying financial hardship my also qualify as well for free transportation with counselor or administrative approval. Students can be dropped off and picked up in the designated areas. Students who are licensed drivers may drive to summer school. Cars driven to campus should not be moved or entered until the students leave the campus at the end of their school day. Students must park in the student parking lots east of the respective buildings. Violators will be ticketed or towed at the expense of the owner. All vehicles parked on school grounds may be subject to search if the school administration suspects a violation of school rules. Students must register their vehicles with the main office on the first day of school. Closed Campus Both Antioch and Lakes High Schools are closed campus schools. Students must remain in the building until their last classes are completed. Students who leave campus during a session or during break will be considered unexcused and could be dropped from the course with a loss of fees and credit. Student Discipline Rules and regulations of the regular school year are in effect according to District 117 policies. Students removed from class for disruptive or inappropriate behavior may be dropped from the school program with a loss of fees and credit
Enrichment Courses: The Psychology of Marvels: Cost $75 June 5 - June 9 7:45am- 9:45am or 10:00am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 Elective 9-12, no credit; no grade This non-credit course will examine the psychology of popular super heroes. Each day, there will be a different psychological focus relating to super heroes. Students will explore the psychological concepts as they relate to famous super heroes. Super heroes that will be examined include: Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League of America, Batman, and Spiderman. SAT/ACT Prep: Cost $ 150 June 5 - June 16 7:45am- 9:45am or 10:00am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 Elective 9-12; no credit; no grade This non-credit course will allow students to hone their ACT test preparedness. During the ACT Prep program, teachers will help students improve their knowledge base and test taking skills. Students will attend ten of sessions that will acquaint them with the expectations of the test, enable them to analyze their own results and sharpen their understanding of key skills covered on the test. Art Drawing and Painting: Cost $225 June 5 - June 23 7:45am- 12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 Elective 9-12, no credit; no grade Students will build skills in drawing and painting through a variety of media. The course allows students studio time for technique driven projects as well as independent study. Students will learn about and use the elements and principles of design. Students will develop their creative process and investigate new visual art concepts. This course will put emphasis on careers in the arts as well as discussion about Art in the world today. English Course: Cost $150 June 5 - June 16 10:00am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 Elective 9-12, no credit; no grade This two-week course is for any student that would like to improve their reading and writing skills. Students will be engaged in close reading strategies to improve their level of comprehension and their ability to infer meaning. Simultaneously, students will be guided through detailed stages of argumentative writing to produce a formal paper. All work will be done during class time. MATH AP Calculus Bridge Class: Cost $225 June 5 - June 23 7:45am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 This non-credit, three-week course for incoming seniors is by teacher recommendation only. It is designed to bridge the curriculum between Algebra II Honors and AP Calculus AB or BC and requires a high level of mastery of all previous math classes. Students will be expected to make connections, think abstractly, and provide justifications while working numerically, geometrically, symbolically, and verbally. A TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is required.
Integrated Math 2 Honors Bridge Class: Cost $225 June 5 - June 23 7:45-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 This non-credit, three-week course is for recommended freshmen who meet the following criteria: NWEA math scores of 240-260 and/or EXPLORE math scores of 19-21. This course is required for students who have completed a middle school Algebra 1 course, and want to enroll in Integrated Math 2 Honors - the second-year course in D117 s integrated math curriculum. Units in basic geometry, geometric reasoning, one-variable statistics, and two-variable statistics will cover the standards aligned to D117 s Integrated Math 1 Honors course that are not taught in traditional Algebra 1 courses. A TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is required. SOCIAL STUDIES AP History Bridge Class: Cost $150 June 5 - June 16 7:45am- 9:45am or 10:00am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 This non-credit, course is for recommended students who meet the following criteria: students interested in enrolling in either AP European History or AP United States History in the fall. The curriculum will focus on skills that will be successful in college level history courses. Skills such as effective reading, and note taking, thesis development, vocabulary development, document analysis, FRQ/DBQ, organization, and use of evidence to support claims will be emphasized. AP Human Geography Class: Cost $75 June 26 - June 30 7:45am- 9:45am or 10:00am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 This non-credit course is recommended for students interested in enrolling in AP Human Geography in the fall. The curriculum will focus on skills including: writing Free Response Questions, analyzing data on maps, charts, and graphs in a college level history course, effective reading and study skills, and more. This course will support AP Human Geography students in being successful critical thinkers in a college level history course. SCIENCE AP Chemistry Bridge Class: Cost $75 June 5 - June 9 7:45am- 9:45am or 10:00am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 This non- credit, one-week course is recommended for students enrolling in AP Chemistry in the fall. The course will focus on re-learning the major content objectives needed in order to begin the year in AP Chemistry. AP Biology Bridge Class: Cost $75 June 5 - June 9 7:45am- 9:45am or 10:00am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 This non- credit, one-week course is recommended for students enrolling in AP Biology in the fall. The course will focus on learning the major Biology content objectives necessary to begin the year in AP Biology.
Credit Bearing Courses: Life Resource Management (LRM): Cost $225 June 5 - June 23 7:45am-12:00pm Registration Deadline: May 1 Elective 10-12, 1 semester,.5 credit This class is a must course for any student planning to live on their own. The majority of the topics will be project based experiences. Topics include: consumer rights and responsibilities, money management including checking and credit, and employment preparation. This course fulfills the Consumer Education graduation requirement. Driver Education: Cost $300 and a $20 permit fee to the Secretary of State in Illinois Location: Antioch Community High School) June 2 - July 14 Two-hour blocks, times will vary Registration Deadline: May 1 Students must be 15 by June 1, 2017 to enroll. A student may enroll in Driver Education at age 15, with parent permission. The course is a two-phase program consisting of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 6 hours behind the wheel instruction including observation hours. Students must be 15 years old to be enrolled in Driver Education and to obtain an Illinois permit. Students must have passed eight courses within the past two semesters, this would include eighth grade year for freshman. Course fee of $300 and $20 permit fee to the Secretary of State of Illinois. Students will attend a 2-hour time block of classroom and behind the wheel/observation instruction. Classes will be offered at 7 a.m., 8 am, 9 a.m., and 10 a.m. Student attendance is critical for meeting curriculum and Illinois State law requires. After three days of absences, students will be dropped from the course, please notify teacher of any prescheduled absences as soon as possible. Classes will be held Monday thru Friday, with no class on July 3 rd or 4 th. Registration will be first come first serve. Classes will be held at Antioch Community High School. Prerequisite: Successfully pass eight courses within the past two semesters and submit application to counselor. Summer Freshmen Academy Summer Freshman Academy (Invite only) (location: Lakes & Antioch Community High Schools) Registration occurs separately by building June 5 - June 30 7:30am-11:45 am Registration Deadline: May 1 Elective,.5 credit Pass grade for those who complete the program satisfactorily This course is designed to foster reading, writing, math, and organizational skills for selected incoming freshmen. Students are reminded to please bring their summer read books each day. Full Semester Credit Recovery: June 5 - June 23 as assigned - Seating is limited - Times Assigned 7:45am-9:45am or 10:00am-12:00pm For students who have failed a Semester 1 or 2 course Cost: $225 Registration Deadline: May 31 Students can recover.5 credits by completing 60 hours of course work. Satisfactory completion of a combination of online assignments and independent written work will fulfill course requirements with a grade of P for Pass. No grade point value will be assigned.
