CRITERION V: STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION 5.1 Student Mentoring and Support 5.1.1 Does the College have an independent system for student support and mentoring? If yes, what are its structural and functional characteristics? 5.1.2 What provisions exist for academic mentoring apart from class room work? Through mid-semester and end-semester examinations. Student progression is monitored through the data bank available with the examination section and departmental records. yes, what are the activities / information included / provided to students through these documents? Is there a provision for online access? Yes, the college publishes its own updated prospectus giving details of various course, faculty, fee structure and academic calendar. There is provision for online access too at www, ranchicollege.org. 5.1.5 Specify the type and number of scholarships / freeships given to students (UG/PG/M.Phil/Ph.D./Diploma/others in tabular form) by the College Management during the last four years. Indicate whether the financial aid was available on time. The college used to provide freeship to poor students, but at present the scholarship is provided by the state government to all the SC/ST/OBC and economically backward students. 5.1.6 What percentage of students receives financial assistance from state government, central government and other national agencies? (e.g., Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), SN Bose Fellow, etc.) As mentioned above. Financial aid in the form of freeship to economically backward students, merit scholarship for students with merit are available from the state government. Insurance cover is available for students joining NCC. 5.1.7 Does the College have an International Student Cell to cater to the needs of foreign students? If so, what measures have been taken to attract foreign students? NO 5.1.8 What types of support services are available for overseas students: No physically challenged / differently abled students: To a certain extent involving reservations in admission. 84

About 10 students have competed in the UGC-CSIR-NET and roughly 30 students have entered the state and central services in the last three years. 85

5.1.10 Mention the policies of the College for enhancing student participation in sports and extracurricular activities through strategies such as additional academic support, flexibility in examinations special dietary requirements, sports uniform and materials any other The outstanding sportspersons are given weightage at the time of admission to higher classes. They are also provided basic facilities and stipend by the university. The institution provides uniform, dietary reqirements and material in coordination with the university. 5.1.11 Does the College have an institutionalized mechanism for placement of its students? What services are provided to help students identify job opportunities, prepare themselves for interview, and develop entrepreneurship skills? A placement cell has been created that invites various companies for job placement. About 30 to 60 students obtain in-campus placement each year. 5.1.12 Give the number of students selected during campus interviews by different employers (list the employers and the number of companies who visited the campus annually for the last four years). 5.1.13 Does the College have a registered Alumni association? If yes, what are its activities and contributions to the development of the College? The Alumni Association meets periodically to discuss the ways and means to improve the academic environment of the college, as well as to exchange views on the employment opportunities and the scope for higher education. It also deliberates upon the role of the Alumni in positive interaction with the society. 5.1.14 Does the College have a student grievance redressal cell? Give details of the nature of grievances reported and how they were redressed. 86

The institution has a grievance redressal cell which looks after the grievances of both the students and faculty and takes necessary action after discussion of the problem. 5.1.15 Does the College have a cell and mechanism to resolve issues of sexual harassment? YES. But such harassment has not occurred in the history of the college. 5.1.16 Is there an anti-ragging committee? How many instances (if any) have been reported during the last four years and what action has been taken on these? Yes but no complaint has been reported in the last four years. 5.1.17 How does the College elicit the cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure overall development of the students considering the curricular and co - curricular activities, research, community orientation, etc.? By inviting them in its meetings and discussing the overall development and considering there positive suggestion in this respect. 5.1.18 What special schemes/mechanisms are in place to motivate students for participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, cultural events, etc? The outstanding sportspersons are given weightage at the time of admission to the various programs. They are also provided basic facilities and stipend by the university. 5.1.19 How does the College ensure participation of women in intra and inter institutional sports competitions and cultural activities? Provides details of sports and cultural activities in which such efforts were made? 87

(1) Ranchi College, (Men and Women) Hockey Teams were Runners up and Winners respectively in the Ranchi University Inter-College Hockey Tournament. (2) Ranchi College Women Football Team is the champions in the Ranchi University Inter-College (W) Football Tournament. (3) Ranchi College Women Volleyball team is the champion in the R.U. Inter-College Womens Volleyball tournament. (4) Eight girl students of the College has represented R. U. in the Inter- University Volleyball (W) Tournament. (5) Five girl students of the College have represented Ranchi University Volleyball (W) Team in the Chancellor s Trophy and was Winner. 5.2 Student Progression 5.2.1 Provide details of programme-wise success rate of the College for the last four years. How does the College compare itself with the performance of other autonomous Colleges / universities (if available) After attainment of autonomy and introduction of the semester system the academic performance has gone up in relation to percentage of successful students and a decrease in the dropout rates. 5.2.2 Providing the percentage of students progressing to higher education or employment (for the last four batches) highlight the observed trends. The dropout rate varies from year to year. It averages to about 7%. 5.2.4 What is the number and percentage of students who appeared/qualified in examinations like UGC-CSIR-NET, UGC-NET, SLET, ATE / CAT / GRE / TOFEL / GMAT / Central / State services, Defense, Civil Services, etc. About 10 students have competed in the UGC-CSIR-NET and roughly 30 students have entered the state and central services in the last three years. 5.2.5 Provide details regarding the number of Ph.D/D.Sc./D.Litt. theses submitted, accepted, resubmitted and rejected in the last four years. About nine Ph.D thesis have been submitted in the last four years and all of them have been completed successfully. 5.3 Student Participation and Activities 5.3.1 List the range of sports and games, cultural and extracurricular activities available to students. Provide details of participation and program calendar. Cultural activities include outdoor sports, quiz contests, debates and socio- cultural programs, drama and dance organized by the college. 89

5.3.2 Provide details of the previous four years regarding the achievements of students in co-curricular, extracurricular activities and cultural activities at different levels: University / State / Zonal / National / International, etc. Not available. 5.3.3 How often does the College collect feedback from students for improving the support services? How is the feedback used? The College collects feedback from students about once every year and analyzes the same for improvisation. 5.3.4 Does the College have a mechanism to seek and use data and feedback from its graduates and employers, to improve the growth and development of the College? Yes the institution collects feedback from students from time to time and is used to evaluate the performance of the faculty and plan strategies for improvement. 5.3.5 How does the College involve and encourage students to publish materials like catalogues, wall magazines, College magazine, and other material? List the major publications/ materials brought out by the students during the previous academic session. Nil 5.3.5 Does the College have a Student Council or any similar body? Give details on its constitution, major activities and funding. Each Department has its own Departmental Council in which two meritorious students are inducted. They participate and express in academic and departmental development activities. 5.3.6 Give details of various academic and administrative bodies that have student representatives on them. As mentioned above. Any additional information regarding Student Support and Progression, which the institution would like to include. The institution strives for the holistic development of students and caters to their needs for progression in academic as well as curricular and extracurricular activities such as sports, debate, quiz contests, cultural activities and others. It also encourages them to have a feel of the external environment through study trips and visits to various institutions so that they know about the national and global demands.
