Memphis-Tennessee-Holston Extension Course of Study Schools 2010 An Extension of the Emory Course of Study The Course of Study is prescribed by the Division of Ordained Ministry of The United Methodist Church to ensure the education of local pastors. A person choosing to enter ministry as a local pastor must complete the Course of Study curriculum. The Course of Study provides an alternative to seminary education. To be admitted to the Extension Course of Study, you must 1) Be a certified candidate, 2) Complete all requirements for license as a local pastor, and 3) Be endorsed by your Annual Conference Board of Ordained Ministry. These extension courses are offered for part-time local pastors only. A part-time local pastor must complete the twenty courses required by the Course of Study within twelve years of the time she or he is licensed. Costs Connected with the Memphis-Tennessee-Holston Extension Course of Study Tuition at the Memphis- Tennessee-Holston Extension Course of Study is $220.00 per course. In addition, a $40.00 nonrefundable registration fee is charged if you enroll at least one month before the School begins. A non-refundable registration fee of $60.00 is charged if you enroll later than one full month in advance of the School. You make your own housing arrangements. Information about housing and driving directions to school sites will be sent upon request. Before registering for a course, check with your Conference Board of Ordained Ministry concerning possible scholarship assistance with tuition. If a Conference scholarship does not cover the entire tuition ($220.00), come to the School prepared to pay the difference between the scholarship and the tuition cost. (Make checks payable to the Memphis-Tennessee- Holston Course of Study.) Your Annual Conference will be billed for your scholarship after you have successfully completed the course.
Enrolling for a Course 1. Complete the appropriate Registration Form. Forms are in this packet. Or you may obtain forms from 1) your District Superintendent, 2) your Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, 3) Ms. Pam Whitmore, 271 East Ninth Street, Cookeville, TN 38501, (931) 526-1343, or 4) Kitty Allen (731) 660-6293. 2. Obtain the signatures of your District Superintendent and the Local Pastor Registrar of your Annual Conference Board of Ordained Ministry on the Registration Form. The Local Pastor Registrar will indicate the amount of scholarship your Annual Conference will provide. 3. Mail the completed Registration Form and your $40 registration fee (or $60 fee if you register less than one month in advance of the start of School) to Ms. Pam Whitmore 271 East Ninth Street Cookeville, TN 38501. 4. Upon receipt of your registration form and fee, Ms. Whitmore will send you the syllabus and pre-course assignment for the course you wish to take. 5. Come to the Course of Study School prepared to pay the difference between the $220.00 tuition and the amount of scholarship your Annual Conference Board of Ministry provides. A pre-course assignment is required for each course. Pre-course written assignments are due the first Friday evening of the course. Late work will be penalized. These assignments will be graded and returned to you. A second assignment will be given the first weekend of the School. This assignment is due the Friday of the second weekend. In most courses, an examination covering assigned reading and class presentations will be administered the final Saturday afternoon. Your grade for the course will be sent to you, the Division of Ordained Ministry, the Director of the Emory Course of Study, your District Superintendent, and your Annual Conference Board of Ministry. A copy of your grade sheet will be kept in the Memphis-Tennessee-Holston Course of Study files.
