Reed Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development Education - Meade County 4-H Membership RE-ENROLLMENT - Last Call!! NOW is the time!! Now is the time to re-enroll to be a 4-H member. The deadline to re-enroll for the 2017-2018 program year is Friday, December 15, 2017. Anyone not enrolled or re-enrolled by this date will be removed from our county mailing list meaning you will not receive the 4-H Newsletter nor will you be an enrolled 4-H member for the 2017-2018 year. Enrollments will be taken throughout the year, but we advise you to do this now rather than later. Please share this information with friends that are not currently enrolled in 4-H so they can be added to our mailing list to receive information about upcoming program opportunities. 4-H Teen Club A wonderful benefit of being a 4-H Member is being involved in a club and learning how to Make the Best Better in yourself and others. A NEW 4-H Teen Club will begin in January 2018, and 4-H members in grades 8 th 12 th are invited to attend. Meetings will take place right after school from 3:00 pm 5:00 pm at the Meade County Extension Office. The scheduled dates include: January 8 th, February 13 th, March 13 th, April 17 th and May 15 th. Join us in January as we begin deciding what the 4-H Teen Club will look like, what activities to do and eat some yummy afterschool snacks! Please call the office, 270-422-4958, and RSVP if you will be attending! 4-H Club Officer Training CONGRATULATIONS!! You have been elected as a member of your club s officer team! Being in this leadership role is VERY IMPORTANT! So, now what? What are you expected to do? What IS parliamentary procedure? How do club members make motions? What are minutes? All of these questions will be answered at our 2018 4-H Club Officer Training on Thursday, January 18, 2018, from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. ALL 4-H Club Officers are invited and encouraged to attend. Call the office, 270-422-4958, to RSVP by January 11 th and we ll save you a spot.

4-H Needle Arts Informational Meeting Anyone interested in needle arts (i.e. sewing, quilting, embroidery, crochet) is invited to attend a 4-H Needle Arts informational meeting on Thursday, January 25, 2018, at 6:30 pm at the Meade County Extension office. During this meeting, not only will you get to meet our new leader (Ms. Angela Dodge) but, this will be your chance to ask questions about project requirements, how to enroll in specific needle art projects, meet other youth interested in sewing and needlework and see a few project examples. If you are interested in attending this informational session, please call the Extension office, 270-422-4958, and let us know that you will be attending. WHAT DOES 4-H MEAN TO YOU? This is the theme for this year s District 5 4-H poster contest. Put on your thinking cap and get busy creating your poster! Here are the rules: RULES: 1. Poster must have 4-H in the title and it should display what 4-H means to the 4-H er or what 4-H provides for boys and girls. 2. Age categories are Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-12. 3. Copyrighted characters cannot be used such as Peanuts, Charlie Brown and Mickey Mouse. Digitally designed art is accepted, but must be the 4-H ers original work. 4. Posters must be designed on poster board 14 x 22 (1/2 of a regular poster board). Posters may be produced by any medium such as water color, ink, crayon, pencil, paint, but cannot be three dimensional. NO GLITTER, or other art supplies that may fall off or stain other projects. 5. All posters must have a completed title form. Affix the form on upper left hand corner on the back of poster. Forms may be picked up at our office. 6. NO sharing posters. Posters are individual. 7. Deadline to turn in poster is February 16, 2018. Winter Weather Notice This fall has been an unusually warm; however, Mother Nature can be very tricky this time of year!! Please remember that if SCHOOL is CANCELLED due to bad weather conditions (FULL OR PARTIAL DAY), ALL 4-H CLUB MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS ARE CANCELLED AS WELL. In the event that school is not closed but threatening weather conditions exist, please contact the Extension Office, 270-422-4958 or check our Facebook page for cancellation announcements.

Our final homeschool day camp for the year will take place on December 19th from 10:00 am 2:00 pm. Our topic for the day will be Science, Engineering & Technology. Youth do not have to be currently enrolled 4-H members, however, we will encourage you to join! A parent is required to stay with their child(ren) during this program. This is a FREE program, you just have to bring a lunch and register by December 18th. Poetry (3 line minimum and 25 line maximum) 3. What 4-H Means to Me Essay (minimum 500 words) 4. Original Monologue 5. Press Release 6. Public Service Announcement Rules and Information * Junior Class Open to any youth, age 9-13 (age as of 1/1/18) * Senior Class Open to any youth, age 14-18 (age as of 1/1/18) * Each writing piece must be original. * Entries are due 4:00 pm on February 16, 2018. Entries may be scanned and emailed to deanakreed@uky.edu or may mail (or drop off) a hard copy. * All entries are to be on 8 1/2 x 11 paper, with entrant s class, name and county on cover page and last name on every page. Please include scoring guide and entry form at the back of the piece. * Entries are to be double-spaced, typed with size 12 font on white paper. Songs may be single spaced within verses, chorus and bridge and double spaced between each item. * Winners will be invited to showcase at the Kentucky State Fair, date TBD. * Song writing, poetry, press release and public service announcement lessons can be found in national 4-H curriculum, Picking Up the Pieces and Putting It Together. Monologue lesson can be found in national 4-H curriculum Play the Role. Registration/informational packet can be picked up at the Extension Office or downloaded from our website, under current events. District 5 4-H Teen Council Attention 8th - 12th grade 4-H Members you are invited to attend the District 5 4-H Teen Council meetings and events! Meetings are held at the Taylor County Extension office and meet every other month. Please contact Deana if you are interested in learning more about these teen meetings.

Become a 4-H Volunteer today and help create life-changing experiences for youth in Meade County! We are currently seeking 4-H Volunteers to fill the following roles: Teen Club leader(s), Visual Arts Club leaders(s), Arts & Crafts Club leader(s), Community Service Club leader(s) and Shooting Sports leader(s). All volunteers must complete a volunteer application and successfully pass all background checks. Please contact the Extension Office to receive an application and to talk to Deana about volunteering. 4-H Council Did you know that as a 4-H parent you are welcome to attend the 4-H Council meetings? Well, you are and we welcome any new faces for the upcoming program year. The 4-H Council is made up of 4-H parents and volunteers who provide guidance and support for the overall Meade County 4-H Youth Development program. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Janaury 22, 2018, at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office. Please JOIN US and become an active adult volunteer for the program!

2018 4-H Summer Camp The weather is getting cooler and the leaves are beginning to fall, but don t fret, SUMMER will be here before you know it! Meade County will once again be attending 4-H summer camp in 2018. SAVE THE DATES: July 3-6, 2018. The total cost for camp will be published in late January 2018. 4-H Summer Camp Gift Certificates Need a last minute gift for your child, your grandchild or a neighbor s child? Why not help send them to 4-H Summer Camp in July?!?! Gift certificates (in any amount) can be purchased at the Extension Office until Thursday, December 21 st! Stop by the office and pick one up TODAY! Gift certificates come with a snowman themed envelope for easy gifting! ADULT (ages 18+) and TEEN (ages 16 & 17) Counselors are needed for summer camp! Adults that apply and are accepted as a counselor receive one FREE camp registration for their child. INTERESTED? Contact Deana at the Extension office for more information and an application.

4-H Livestock Reality Store The 4-H Livestock Reality Store will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2018, beginning at 11:00 am at the Meade County Extension Office and is a REQUIRED educational program for all our livestock project members, ages 9-18. Clover Bud members are invited to attend and participate but are not required. Because of the number of livestock club members we have, an attendance rotation has been set up to avoid having too many people in the meeting space at one time. Following is the rotation of the day: 10:30 am Volunteers arrive for a brief orientation 11:00 am Goat/Sheep Club participates 12:00 pm Beef Club participates Goat/Sheep Club start meeting in craft room Individual species clubs will continue to meet until dismissed by leader 1:00 pm Swine Club participates Beef Club start meeting in craft room Individual species clubs will continue to meet until dismissed by leader 2:00 pm End of program - volunteers dismissed Swine Club start meeting in room 3 Individual species clubs will continue to meet until dismissed by leader Snacks or a light lunch will be provided for club members while they participate in the 4-H Livestock Reality Store. Parents are invited and encouraged to stay and go through the program with their 4-H er so that furture discussions can happen at home about what is learned and how it can be applied to your child s 4-H livestock project. If you are interested in volunteering to run a booth, help with food, event set-up/take-down or mentoring a member through their time in the store, please contact the Meade County Extension office or your club leader and let them know you are available to help.
