School Sport NT is re-aligning the participation access and the representative pathway program we provide. Why? Over the past number of years our program has slowly found it difficult and unable to provide equity of access to all students in all regions in all sports. Financial considerations, curriculum expectations, volunteer availability, competing interests, participation numbers have all been significant contributors to this downward slide. What do we do about it? We need to change the way we deliver a great product to make it greater and meet the needs of kids. How do we do that? At the inter school level, we hope to coordinate competitions between nearby schools either by travelling short distances to other schools or using a virtual competition between schools and build physical competency and still have fun. At the region level we would like to encourage increased participation in competitions providing game skills and fun as well as build school pride. At the NT level we would like to provide opportunities for talented students with invitations to special events coordinated in Darwin. The sports at these events would be aligned with the sports on the School Sport NT pathway program with the potential to lead to NT representation at School Sport Australia events or pathways into various sport development programs. The sports we would be implementing this change to will be Rugby League, Tennis, Basketball, Touch Football and Cricket in 2017. Australian Football, Netball and Football (Soccer) will run the same as in 2016 in various locations in 2017. Goal: The goal of school sport is to provide a strong foundation at the grass roots level for students to build a full and active life through sport at school and through a continuing active lifestyle outside of school on pathways of their choosing. Aims: Ensure an increase in the participation rate of young people in physical activity at all levels Raise young people s level of physical competency School Sport Coordinator: Tahlia Rutherford Administration Assistant: Andrea Krikke e tahlia.rutherford@nt.gov.au e desertstorm.ssnt@ntschools.net m 0408 871 905 p 8951 1696

Greater coordination with the State Sporting Organisations (SSO) to assist in the provision of access to delivery programs Funded trial of inter school pilot project in three Darwin urban hubs for semester one 2017 with consideration for full roll out if successful and sustainable Territory wide in semester two and beyond Cost equalisation employed for all selected students to participate in special events in Darwin Running costs of the new special events met by School Sport NT grant Better teacher: student ratio both travelling to and from Darwin based event and at event and in overnight accommodation Improved student engagement at the local level Improved Region Administration support Some assistance with whole of Region meetings for discussions of issues More pathway opportunities for students as student referees/umpires and student assistant coaches School Sport Coordinator: Tahlia Rutherford e tahlia.rutherford@nt.gov.au m 0408 871 905 Administration Assistant: Andrea Krikke e desertstorm.ssnt@ntschools.net p 8951 1696

Alice Springs Region School Sport is working towards ensuring that every student in Alice Springs Region has the opportunity to participate in sport and learn the necessary skills to participate for life We aim to increase the participation rates of students in the Alice Springs region and continue to provide an educational experience for staff and students. We also strive to provide representative pathways for specific sports and officiating roles. School Sport Alice Springs- getting more kids, more active, more often Urban schools Alice Springs Region urban schools are continuing a weekly school sport program during school time throughout 2017. The goal is to provide a strong foundation for students to build a full and active life. Students will be participating in the Alice Region Urban Inter School Sport Program 2017, which focuses on the skill development of a sport towards competition as well as participation and enjoyment. The interschool sport program provides students to opportunity to come and develop skills within a chosen sport. Alice Region Urban Inter School Sport Program 2017 will consist of 2 parts Part 1 Come Try Day : (see calendar for dates) There will be 2 sports to choose from each fortnight. Students will complete the 2 sessions for that sport and a different sport will be selected for the following fortnight. Groups will be made up of students form different schools. From these Come Try Day sessions, students may be identified for selection for the next level in the School Sport NT Pathway for that particular sport. Selection sessions will be held after school and be conducted by Alice Springs Regional Team Officials. *Students who have missed the inter school sport program sessions are welcome to attend. Part 2 Inter School : (see calendar for dates) Schools will participate in a variety of sports as a school team. Each sport will run 4 week program with a gala day at the end of each 4 week block. Schools are encouraged to utilize Sporting in Schools funding for specific skills sessions during the week. The afternoon session will be designated for school vs schools matches. Remote schools Students will have the opportunity to nominate through schools if they wish to be considered for section into Alice Springs Regional teams. Development officers visiting your regions and sport officers within your community will be able to offer assistance with sporting activities and identifying students for nomination. Schools will be provided with a calendar of regional events which they are most welcome to come and participate in. Understanding travel, time and costs are huge barriers facing remote schools there will be an ongoing stream of resources and ideas provided by the Regional School Sport Coordinator for you to implement at individual schools.
