The Prep School, for ages 2 13, is located four miles away at Glastonbury. The school has in its 80 year history achieved significant growth. Established in 1935 by Jack Boss Meyer with six princes from India, today it is an international, multi faith school welcoming young people from all backgrounds and over 70 nationalities. Millfield may be one of the bigger independent schools, but its ethos remains to discover and develop the potential of every pupil. The school has been structured to make sure it is friendly, approachable and focused on the unique needs of each individual. Millfield provides a broad and balanced education preparing pupils for public examinations and also giving them the confidence to achieve success throughout their adult lives. The school offers an exceptionally wide range of courses whilst still allowing pupils' programmes to be tailored to individual needs. Innovation remains at the heart of the school with a commitment to continually refine how to
offer an exceptional and fully rounded education. Recent examples of this include the launch of Nine at Millfield, a dynamic Year 9 programme, and the use of pupil ipads to promote digital learning. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT SCIENCE AT MILLFIELD THE DEPARTMENT The Physical Education and Sport Science department consists of 13 members of staff, one of whom is part time. It is a cheerful, dynamic and inspiring department with a great sense of professionalism and team spirit. The department follows the OCR syllabus at AS and A level, the Cambridge International syllabus at IGCSE level and it continues to offer the Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Sport. Results in external examinations are excellent at all levels. The Department has eleven well equipped rooms for A level, BTEC Sport and GCSE teaching. The courses offered by the Department are popular and pupil numbers in academic PE and Sport Science are high at all levels. All teachers in the Department are fully committed to the aims of PE and the atmosphere is one of professionalism and constant progression, with excellent opportunities for continued professional development. Millfield has outstanding facilities for the teaching of Physical Education and Sport Science: two sports halls; a 50 metre indoor swimming pool; a 400 metre all weather track; an indoor tennis centre; a double floodlit, water based AstroTurf and numerous other specialist facilities. In addition, there are two well equipped Fitness Training Centres. Many pupils choose Physical Education as one of their optional GCSE subjects there are currently over 100 pupils studying GCSE PE in Year 11 and a further 120 in Year 10. In addition, there has been considerable growth in the numbers studying at A level. The BTEC Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence) was successfully introduced as a sixth form option in September 2008 and remains a popular choice. The department has a part time secretary (10 hours per week) to assist with administrative tasks.
CURRICULUM AND RESULTS A level Courses We follow the OCR specification at AS and A level. Internally, we have changed the name of this qualification from Physical Education to Sport Science to reflect the heavy science focus on this reformed qualification. Our current upper sixth pupils will complete their AQA A2 course in June 2017. BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) The BTEC Diploma in Sport is equivalent to two A levels. Currently, we have two sets of BTEC Sport in both the lower and upper sixth. BTEC Sport remains a popular choice for many pupils and the vast majority of pupils who take the BTEC Sport course obtain outstanding results. IGCSE Pupils follow the Cambridge IGCSE specification in Physical Education. External Exam Results Despite a wide range of abilities taking our courses, results in recent years have been very strong. At both GCSE and A level we have over 50% of pupils achieving A* B grades. In the BTEC course we regularly get 50% achieving D* and D grades. Extra Curricular Physical Education Taking pupils beyond the syllabus, is a very important part of what we do. As well as catering for the needs of our brightest pupils, we try to engender and develop enquiring minds in Physical Education and sport in as many pupils as possible, regardless of ability, through extra curricular events and activities. In particular, the department runs a number of enrichment activities which are popular with all pupils studying Physical Education and BTEC Sport and have in the past included visits to Sport Science departments at local universities and the English Institute of Sport as well as hosting guest speakers who have talked about a range of sports related issues. The department also has its own academic society (the de Coubertin Society) whose aims are to extend and enhance the learning experience of our pupils by providing a forum for dialogue and interaction among department members, pupils, and professionals; to provide leadership opportunities and to create bonds of friendship among pupils with similar professional or academic interest. The de Coubertin Society hosts guest speakers and regularly holds dinner events in which academic debate around contemporary sporting issues ensues. Sporting Programme The Year 9 programme at Millfield gives pupils the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of physical activities. Specialist PE teachers are involved in coaching Year 9 pupils on Monday mornings and also involved in their general games sessions and club activities. Millfield offers an outstanding programme in a full range of team and individual sports (see our website and twitter feed for further details). Members of the Physical Education department are expected to play a full part in coaching pupils in these sports. High quality instruction and leadership in this area is required.
