STUDENTS MAKING THE DIFFERENCE HONORING SAN DIEGO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR MAKING THE DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND SCHOOLS Purpose: To recognize and reward outstanding San Diego County student leaders who are making the difference in their schools and communities. Awards: Selected students will receive a tuition scholarship of $5,000 and a laptop computer. Directions: Only fully completed applications will be accepted. Please type all application materials. Applications must be postmarked by June 26, 2009. Please do not attach miscellaneous materials. Interviews for selected finalists will be held in mid September. Eligibility: Open to all high school juniors, who are U.S. residents, in public and private schools in San Diego County. Must have an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0. Applications must be postmarked by June 26, 2009, in order to receive consideration. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Describe in an essay (three page maximum) the following issues: a) What you have done to provide service and leadership in both your community and school. b) Why it is important for you to provide service and leadership to people in your community and school and what has been the impact to your community and school. c) What you have learned about yourself as a leader through your service to your community and school. * Please note that it is extremely important to address all of the above issues in your essay. 2. 2009 Recommendation Letter Guidelines The High School junior who has given you this Recommendation Guideline sheet is applying to be a Chargers Champions Scholar for 2009. The scholarship program selects young men and women who, through their leadership, are having a positive impact on their school AND community. Chargers Champions, the dream of the Spanos family is in its 10 th year of benefiting youth, education and sports in San Diego County. Since its inception, over $3 million dollars have been awarded to students and area schools. Chargers Champions is dedicated to identifying and honoring those Making the Difference in their communities and in people s lives. In 2009, ten high school juniors will be selected to become Chargers Champions. Each student will receive a $5,000 tuition scholarship, a lap top computer, and will be recognized at a Chargers home game during the 2009 season. You are being asked to provide one of the two letters of recommendation necessary to complete the application. Each student must submit a letter from their school and from an organization they work with in the community. When crafting your letter please keep the following in mind: School Recommendation: Your recommendation must be completed on your school s official letterhead. Only originals will be accepted. Your letter should discuss the positive impact you believe this student has had on your school. Your letter should also discuss the student s level of commitment and accomplishments at your school. Community Recommendation: Your recommendation must be completed on your organization s official letterhead. Only originals will be accepted. Your letter should also discuss the student s level of commitment to your organization, how long they have been a volunteer and any accomplishments you feel deserve noting.
