High-performing systems across the world deliberately organise the sharing of teaching practices within and across schools. Last week, as part of our quality teaching strategic direction, Mr Warren, Mrs Meteyard and Miss Jarvis began their Quality Teaching Rounds. In conjunction with the University of Newcastle s School of Education Quality Teaching Rounds, teachers from our local community of schools observe lessons and classroom practice. The formal schedule involves all teachers coding 18 elements of successful practice with research-based professional reading and discussion. We have allocated school funding for this in the form of teacher release as they visit other schools to observe lessons. The 18 elements observed ask if the following teaching practices are evident in these three domains: Intellectual Environmental Significance Deep Knowledge Deep Understanding Higher Order Thinking Problematic Knowledge Substantive Communication Metalanguage Explicit quality criteria High Expectations Social Support Students selfregulation Student direction Background knowledge Cultural knowledge Knowledge integration Inclusivity Connectedness Narrative STAGE 3 TEACHERS AT SYDNEY UNIVERSITY Our year 5 and 6 teachers will spend next Thursday and Friday at Sydney University as part of phase 2 of the STEM Teacher Enrichment Academy. Sessions will involve a deeper understanding of STEM pedagogy including the Stanford Design Thinking Process which we have adopted, robotics, digital technologies and student assessment. We thank one of our parents, Manfred Yew for sharing his expertise in this area with 4/5S and 5K this week. SPELLING BEE COMPETITION Over the next few weeks, one class finalist will be chosen to compete in a grade final of the Spelling Bee Competition. Spelling words for the Grade finals will be drawn from the official spelling site: https://www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/2018-premiers-spelling-bee Password: dazzle WINTER IS HERE!
