Weekly Newsletter March 5, 2017 From the Principal s Desk ITBS Testing Begins Monday, March 6 th We will begin ITBS National Testing on Monday, March 6 th. Students will only test in the morning. Only students in grade two through eight will be taking the tests. These tests cover all areas of language arts, math computation and concepts, science, social studies, and research skills. HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD PREPARE The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills is used by all of the Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Venice. The testing data from the ITBS is used to review our current curriculum and plan for future growth and improvement. What your child is learning on a daily basis builds the foundation for being able to demonstrate high achievement on tests. We recommend that you talk with your child about the importance of giving his/her best effort during testing. The following thoughts will help you in preparing your child for being ready on the days of testing. The night before: Help your child get to bed on time. Research shows that being well rested helps students do better. Mention the test to show you re interested, but don t dwell on it. Please keep the test low key and stress free for your child. Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the mornings of the tests. The morning of the test: Get up early to avoid rushing. Be sure to have your child at school on time. Drop off begins at 7:35 am. Students may go to classrooms and get organized at 7:45 am. All students need to be in the courtyard and ready for prayer no later than 8:00 am. Have your child eat a good breakfast but not a heavy one. Research shows that students do better if they have breakfast before they take tests. Be positive about the tests. Acknowledge that tests can be hard and that they re designed so that no one should know all of the answers. Explain that doing your best is what counts. The important thing is to make your child comfortable and confident about the test. After the test: Talk to your child about his or her feelings about the test, making sure you acknowledge the effort such a task requires. Discuss what was easy and what was hard; discuss what your child learned from the test. Discuss what changes your child would make if he or she were to retake the test. Explain that performance on a test is not a condition for you to love your child. Explain to your child that this is not a graded or pass/fail test. Please keep this week as low stress for your children as possible. There will be no homework assigned during testing week.
