I am very excited to be leading Manly this year and very much looking forward to the year ahead. Over the holidays my family arrived from Townsville and have settled in very well. The last two days have been excellent at school - our children smiling and very happy to be back at school. Thank you for sending your children with stationery and an attitude of ready to learn. We have been very busy over the last few weeks getting ready for school and have made a few changes to our school operations to hopefully make it even better. Uniforms The last few days have been awesome walking into classrooms to be greeted by a sea of blue and grey. I have started reminding children about the importance of our uniform. Wearing our uniform means you are part of Manly and also proud of our school. At our first P and C meeting I am looking forward to discussing the finer points of our uniform in order to give everyone in our community a very clear uniform policy. We cannot send home our policy until it has had P and C consultation and endorsement. In the meantime, we do have broad expectations which include - Sports Uniforms are only worn in the Prep Year and on sports days these are-monday Year 3 and Year 6, Tuesday Year 1, Wednesday Year 5 and Year 4A/4H/4T, and Thursday Year 2 and 4T- Black shoes (please ask your teacher if unsure) with grey socks (boys) and white socks (girls) for our formal uniform.- Manly hat for playtime. As I mentioned above, these are only recommendations until I have consulted with our P and C. Thank you for your ongoing support with this I am very proud of our uniforms and also the unique designs and colours that really do make us all part of the Manly family. Playground and Playtime For the start of 2017 we are trialling two ideas which include-a. Before School Process last year I noticed we did not have any processes for before school supervision. I was also concerned with our oval being open to play before school and the associated supervision and safety requirements and risks. Therefore, for term 1, 2017 we will trial for before school - If you arrive before 8.35am, children sit and wait in the undercover area near the Hall.- From 8.35 to 8.55am children socialise around the school and prepare for the day. Our oval is closed before school.b. One Lunch and One Morning Tea we will trial our school coming together for morning tea and lunch breaks rather than

split times. At this stage, Preps have their own breaks, year 1 eat in the year 1 igloo, years 2 and 3 eat under the library and years 4, 5 and 6 will eat from next week in the undercover area. When I presented this idea to the P and C last year, we decided that we would reflect upon the idea once we have trialled it for a while. The breaks have also been developed in consultation with our Education Queensland break requirements. For each of these items we will see how we go and welcome feedback. Our aim is to develop clear procedures for our behaviour processes around the school and promote a safe and respectful environment for our children. SMS Text Service Started This week we launched our SMS text service. This text service provides us with some peace of mind because we will now text you if your child is away from school. In order for this to work well, I would really appreciate it if we could have your up to date mobile phone number on record. Please contact the office to update your number if you have changed numbers. We will also be using the text service to contact you regarding events through the year like field trips. P and C I very much enjoyed my three P and C meetings last year and we are very lucky to have such a dedicated team in our school. Our first meeting will be held on the 20 th of February in the library and will be held each month. At our first meeting I would like to present our school goals for the year and also discuss our uniform.fete in MayThis year we will be holding our first school fete in many years. I am very excited about having a fete as it is a wonderful chance to meet families and have a great time. More details will follow in the lead up to our May fete. Wireless Upgrade The wireless upgrade to our school computer network continued over the holidays and will be complete in the next few weeks. This will allow us to carry a high number of devices throughout the school with reliable connectivity. New Building Our year 3 students moved into our new building this week. The children and teachers have done a marvellous job in creating a beautiful learning space. A Few Quick Numbers This year our school has opened with 674 students which is a slight increase of 24 students from last year. We have 27 classes across our school and a staff of approximately 60. It is an absolute honour to lead our community for the 107 th year of Manly. School Carnivals and Sport We are currently putting together our carnival calendar for 2017 and will be ready for next week. At this stage we will hold our Cross Country Carnival later this term, Interhouse Athletics late term 2/ early term 3 and Swimming Carnival in term 4. I will confirm exact dates for all of these carnivals in next week s newsletter. Meet n Greet Our Meet the Teacher evening will be held in week 3. We will send home a note next week to confirm this date for you. Year Calendar

Over the last few weeks we have been working on a whole of year calendar for Manly to give you next week. I am hoping that it will give us some direction as a community for all of our events. When you see it, 2017 promises to be a very exciting year! You will also notice a number of new events including Easter Bonnet Parade and the return of some old favourites including Book Week Parade and Trash and Treasure. I wish you a fun Australia Day and kind regards, Clayton and Nicole From The Health & Physical Education Department Welcome to Physical Education and Sport for 2017 Hello and welcome to another exciting year of Physical Education and Sport at Manly State School.
