ABOUT INSTITUTE The Regional Institute of English (RIE) was established in 1963 under a scheme of the Government of India to address the educational needs of Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The functioning of the Institute is within the purview of the Chandigarh Administration. The Institute works in collaboration with the English and Foreign Languages University (EFL-U), Hyderabad under a Government of India Scheme and also collaborates with state governments in the nothern region, CBSE, Panjab University, NCERT, USIEF, British Council and RELO, American Centre, New Delhi in research projects and teacher training programmes. In 2016 Institute was accredited with NAAC both for MA English and Teacher Education programmes. Presently the Institute is also covered under RUSA and has conducted many RUSA sponsored courses. Having enlarged its scope of activities since its inception, the Institute has introduced MA (English) in affiliation with Panjab University, Chandigarh. Since its inception, it has been catering to Education needs of the region from Primary to Undergraduate level by organizing In-service Programmes. It is a pioneer in introducing multimediabased techniques in teaching English Language. More than 10,000 teachers have benefitted from the various courses in the last ten years. Three new courses were introduced in 2010-11 at the institute: A 100-hour course in Personal Development for students of UT Administration colleges, CTOSS (Chandigarh Training on Soft Skills) for UT Administration schools and Afghan University Student Exchange Programme (AUSEP), a four week teacher education course in ELT for Afghan undergraduates/ graduates. One new department was introduced in the session 2016-17 i.e. Department of Continuous Development with the aim to address the needs of ELT in colleges and schools. COURSES OF STUDY The Institute offers the following courses of study: Department of Postgraduate Studies M.A. English (Co-educational) (In affiliation with PanjabUniveristy, Chandigarh) The institute started the M.A. English Programme in the 2010-11 academic session with 30 seats in affiliation with Panjab University, Chandigarh. One of the few Institutes in the region where the MA English students have a Language Lab allotted exclusively to them with language software and round-the-clock internet facilities.
Department of Continuous Professional Development RIE Continuous Professional Development (RIE CPD) In-Service Staggered Teacher Training Model has been piloted by RIE under the CPD programme in the academic session 2016-17. This progarmme works by giving them a staggered course which will keep them oriented with the course content both while attending the course at the Institute and while away from the Institute and attending the need of their students in the schools. Continuous Professional Development (Need Based) The Institute organizes short need based courses for school teachers at all levels in collaboration with SSA/RMSA Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana annually. They are imparted new methodologies in the field of teaching English in these workshops keeping in mind the regulations and guidelines set down by the NCF. Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of English (PGCTE) This three month in-service course is for trained graduate/post-graduate teachers of English, working in secondary and senior secondary schools in the northern region. The course aims at imparting knowledge of the structure of English through Linguistics, Phonetics and Grammar and Usage of English along with enhancing Computer Skills of the trainees. The course also aims at sensitizing the participants to Research Skills leading to Material Production (print and video) that can be readily used in the classrooms. Since 101 PGCTE Course onwards, the Institute has taken the initiative to offer a blended mode of PGCTE Course. The first mode constitutes an on campus mode, the duration of which is eight weeks. This mode is also called a face-to-face mode as the trainees enjoy the benefit of improving their performance and competence by being in touch with the faculty on a day to day basis. The second mode is called an online or offcampus mode. The duration of this course is eight weeks. This mode is designed to make the duration of course more comfortable, particularly for in-service teachers. Extension Services CTOSS: Chandigarh Training on Soft Skills The brainchild of the Department of IT, Chandigarh, the course was conceptualized to improve English Communication of the students of government schools, Chandigarh. In the current session the CTOSS programmeis running for IX, X and XI class students in 90 government schools of Chandigarh Administration
. I Can Club was initiated by the Institute to give a platform to the students undergoing C-TOSS in government schools of Chandigarh administration. It focuses on preparing students for effective public speaking in English language through various activities conducted inside and outside classrooms. RIE Certificate in Personal Development This is a 120-hour training module to develop skilled professionals for the industry. The course aims at imparting training in English Communication Skills, Interpersonal Skills, and Computer Skills to job seekers thereby enhancing their employability skills. For this, the doorstep education model has been adopted and is being delivered at government colleges to around 3000 students annually. RUSA The Institute has developed and maintained several infrastructural and academic facilities conducive to learning. Library The Institute has a well-equipped library which stocks a rich collection of around 25,000 books on ELT, English Linguistics, Communication Skills, English Literature, besides journals and multimedia software to promote language learning. The computerized library facilitates easy access to books and movies. Multimedia Language Labs The Institute is a pioneer in establishing a computerized multimedia language lab. The Institute has two language labs with 50 computers and hi-tech software to enhance Communication Skills of users. One of the labs is solely dedicated to MA(English) students. Studio It is a film production center which is well equipped with an editing suite, high definition cameras and studio lights. Classrooms INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES The Institute has air-conditioned classrooms with comfortable furniture and modern gadgets to facilitate the teaching learning experience. All of the classrooms are equipped with LCD Projectors and LCD Screens. They are also equipped with an Interactive Board which has in-built teaching materials like clip-art, drawing objects and many other tools. With a capacity to accommodate 36 occupants at a time the hostel offers the following facilities: a) Computers with Internet b) Satellite Television c) Co-operative Mess EXTENSION, GUIDANCE & CONSULTANCY SERVICES The Institute organizes the following programmes and workshops for schools, colleges, and other educational bodies: Workshops in lesson planning, material production and paper setting. ELT consultancy to State Departments of Education, Boards of School Education, and other organizations consultancy includes: a) preparing syllabi b) writing and revising textbooks/support materials c) preparing innovative electronic & multimedia materials d) selecting teachers e) training teachers f) setting question papers ELT JOURNAL The Institute publishes an ELT refereed journal, Focus on English Language Teaching (FELT), bi-annually, bearing ISSN 0976-1306. It is devoted to English Language Teaching from primary to university level and Teaching of English Literature. It provides a forum to teachers of English to discuss their problems related to the teaching of English.
