All photos need to be emailed to Andrea andreawhite@stbrigids.catholic.edu.au by Wednesday August 26 to enable the presentation to be prepared. You are all invited to join the school community on Friday September 4 at 9.15am in the SAMMAT for our ceremony and afterwards for morning tea to celebrate Father s Day. Family Mass: Family Mass will be celebrated at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Sunday September 6 at 10am. Everybody is welcome. If your child would like to participate in the Family Mass please email Andrea White andreawhite@stbrigids.catholic.edu.au Did you know.. Catholics go to mass on Sundays because they believe it is central to their lives as Christians? Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. A person receives the body and blood of Christ under the form of bread and wine. At times, for practical reasons, communion is simply shared under the form of bread. Catholic worship is organised around annual cycles with different seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. This is known as the Liturgical Calendar. Did you know.. Our Catholic Schools are Church for many of our students? At St Brigid s Catholic School we are the church We belong to the Parish of Ss Peter and Paul, our Parish Priest, Fr Germano Baiguini SDB is actively involved in the ministry of our faith with the students Our Religious Education Program underpins all our values about our relationships with one another and the world around us. LEARNING DIMENSION Reggio Conversations: What kind of school, what kind of teacher, what kind of me for what image of the child? This week we wish to discuss the notion of the Language of Materials. Based on the principle of Loris Malaguzzi s 100 Languages of Children, the language of materials asks us to consider the possibilities for a deeper understanding of the use and expression of materials that children may use as part of their learning. From the immerging learner of the infant toddler to the accomplished student, being open to the language of materials allows for greater connection to the properties of those material and thus using them to solve a particular problem or provocation. You may be familiar with the idea of a particular material speaking to the artist before she or he undertakes a project. We also know the importance of design properties because they offer possibilities for solutions to problems. For our children as they grow and develop, it is the language that they use to express themselves about the work they are undertaking with a particular material that is both exciting and illuminating. As Alessandro, 5.6 years of age explains; A smooth story goes on the clear sheet, a rough story goes on the wavy sheet, a grated story goes on the rough sheet. And on the black one.. the stories of courage go on the black one. (Mosaic of Marks Words Material, Reggio children 2015) You may never look at materials in the same way again! NAPLAN: Early next week families with children in Year 3, 5 & 7 will receive their NAPLAN Report for 2015. We are extremely pleased to see significant growth in this cohort of students. Please feel welcome to discuss your child s result with their class teacher. ADMINISTRATIVE DIMENSION Are you returning in 2016?: With several families currently on a waiting list for 2016 we are in the process of confirming class numbers for next year. If you are not returning to St Brigid s in 2016 can you please email Andrea Mackereth info@stbrigids.catholic.edu.au. Inspired by Love Creative Collaborative Connected Learners

ADMINISTRATIVE DIMENSION cont. LEADERSHIP NEWS cont. Uniform: We remind families that throughout winter children are able to wear a designated St. Brigid s navy coloured scarf. These are available from the Uniform Shop. Other scarves, particularly of other colours, are not part of the uniform and we ask children not to wear these. We thank you for supporting our uniform policy in this way. School Board: Last Monday at our monthly School Board meeting we discussed a number of significant issues. The Board amended a number of policies including: - School Board Policy - Positive Resolution Policy - Fee Policy - Home Learning Policy (Formerly Homework Policy) The aim of the amended Home Learning Policy is to obtain greater consistency across Reception to Year 7 for the intention of the learning which occurs after school hours. We will be issuing a summary of this policy in week seven for your perusal and to ensure children, staff and families are aligned on our expectations. We also considered the change by the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools which now enables a Reception Term 3 intake. Due to the timing and existing Kindergarten/Early Learning enrolments at local centres, for 2016 the School Board aims to support 12 months of children s participation in the Early Learning Framework before commencing Reception. In relation to 2017 and beyond the School Board wishes to consult further with families and Kindergartens/Early Learning Centres as we formulate our position, one which aims to ensure the best learning opportunities for our children. Child Protection: We are extremely blessed at St Brigid s that our families value the commitment we make to ensure the safety of our children. Consequently, many within our community have undertaken a Catholic Education Police clearance and completed their online Responding To Abuse & Neglect (RAN) training. Next week every staff member will be attending a meeting to discuss the updated RAN module which must be completed every three years and we are also reviewing our school structures. Many of the modifications are a result of the Debelle Inquiry, a report initiated by the State Government, which investigated the handling of an incident at a western suburbs DECD school in 2010. It is an expectation that any volunteer in a Catholic School will be required to attend a one hour workshop at our school to undertake the RAN training. This supercedes the previous online format which many of our families completed. Further information will be distributed later this term re the RAN sessions being offered in Term 4. COMMUNITY DIMENSION Sausage Sizzle: Thank you to our children and families for supporting our BBQ fundraiser this week we raised $404.75 this money will go into our 88 Keys Appeal. We are now only $2145.00 away from purchasing this wonderful instrument for our school and community. Student Disco: A student disco for children from Reception to Year 5 will be held on Friday September 4 th from 5:30pm 7:00pm. Tickets cost $5 and includes chips and a pop top. Quiz Night: St Brigid s Parent Team are once again coordinating a QUIZ NIGHT on Saturday 31st October, 7.00pm. It is a Fancy Dress Theme and members of the Parent Team and our Front Office are now taking table bookings - $10.00 per ticket, 10 people per table. Please support what will be a fun evening with family and friends. Funds raised will assist our Parent Team in purchasing shade sails for our primary playground. INFLUENZA ALERT Paul Bennett Principal Gennaro Mannella Deputy Principal Andrea White Assistant Principal RIM Please see Influenza symptoms later on in the newsletter. This year St Brigids Catholic School has taken the opportunity to participate in the OzAsia Moon Festival. This modern day multi-cultural celebration is based on an ancient Chinese harvest tradition going back more than 3,000 years. Our school s participation will involve two classes Mrs White s Year 5s and Mrs Noble s Year 3s. These children will have the privilege of an artist s {Ms Paula Gallagher} assistance for three hours on three different Wednesdays {Lessons 1, 2, 3 and 4 on 26th August, 2nd & 16th September 2015}. During this time they will be constructing their lanterns. This venture provides us the opportunity to incorporate not only Asian studies but also Art, Design/Technology, Indonesian and Maths into the curriculum, thus enhancing our children s learning. On Sunday 27th September 2015 {first Sunday of the holidays} the children in these classes will have the possibility of carrying their lanterns in the OzAsia Moon Festival parade to be held in Elder Park. This is a FREE family event that we hope most children and their families attend. We are looking at expressions of interest to assist us in putting together teams for Under 8 s, and 10 and under, for the Summer Season which will run for Term 4 2015 and Term 1 2016. No experience necessary. Games are played on Tuesday afternoons at Starplex, with training sessions run at the SAMMAT before the games. Our new school Chaplain, Mr Matthews, who is an accomplished basketball player, has come on board and is keen to see the students progress and succeed in the game. It is essential that parents of children involved must be present at training sessions and take children to and from the games at Starplex. We are also looking forward into Terms 2 and 3, 2016 to starting up a team for 12 and under that will play on a Monday afternoons.
