Philosophy of Athletics The philosophy of interscholastic athletics at Chelmsford High School is an extension of the general educational philosophy of the Chelmsford Public Schools. Participation in interscholastic athletics will strengthen and enhance both the Academic Learning expectations and the Social and Civic Expectations. Athletic competition of studentathletes should be fun and a significant part of a sound educational program, embodying high standards of ethics and sportsmanship while developing good character and other important life skills. The highest potential of sports is achieved by committing to the ideal of pursuing victory with honor. Registration and User Fee Step 1 Dated and Signed Physical Exam by first day of try-outs Athlete MUST have physical exam dated within thirteen months of the start of each season. Per state law and the MIAA, physical examinations that expire result in immediate ineligibility until a new physical examination has taken place. Physical examinations must be performed by a duly registered physician, physician s assistant or nurse practitioner. Athletes WILL NOT be allowed to participate without having a physical examination in good standing. Registration and User Fee (Cont.) User Fees First Sport - $300 Second Sport - $250 Third Sport - $200 Online Payment is preferred This will open on Tuesday, June 14. The funds will not be withdrawn from your account until September 8th (Once teams have been finalized). Financial Aid offered to students that are on Free or Reduced Lunch. Department Secretary will assist with this process. Chemical Health Policy MIAA Rule 62 During the school year, a student shall not, regardless of the quantity, be in the presence of the illegal use, consumption, possession, buying/selling, or giving away of any beverage containing alcohol, marijuana, steroids, or any controlled substance. Any athlete found to be under the influence of, using or possessing any alcoholic beverages or drugs on school property or at official school functions will receive a suspension that equals 25% of the regular season. He or she will also be punished according to the school s policies for all students. CHS Rule: In The Presence Of: Any athlete found to be in the presence of alcohol or drugs at a school event or on school property, will lose eligibility for the next consecutive interscholastic athletic contests totaling 10% of the season. Bona Fide Team Member MIAA Rule 45- Bona fide members of a school team are precluded from missing a high school practice or competition in order to participate on a non-school activity/event in any sport recognized by the MIAA. Any student who violates this standard becomes ineligible for 25% of the season. Second violation is an additional 25% and ineligible for MIAA tournament for that season. 10
Conflict Resolution Protocol: If at any time a student-athlete or parent desires to lodge a complaint or discuss an alleged injustice, this procedure should be followed: Contact the immediate coach involved (may be contacted through the Athletic Office). If resolution is unacceptable, contact the head coach of the program. If resolution is unacceptable, contact the Director of Athletics. If resolution is unacceptable, contact the High School Principal. If resolution is unacceptable, contact the Superintendent of Schools. Medical If a player is removed from a game or practice due to injury and been seen by a doctor, That S/A can not return to play without a clear doctors note saying they can participate and a trainers clearance If the trainers remove them from practice or game and deem they don t need to see a doctor they can clear S/A for return 11
Concussions Once a S/A has received a doctors clearance to start the return to play program it is at least a 4 day process with the trainer before they can return to full duty. Athletes and parents must complete the online class on concussions and have this passed in before your first day of practice or S/A will not be allowed to practice. CHS All Sports Booster Club The CHS Booster Club will be active in the raising of funds to assist and support school athletic programs. Fund raising shall support a strong revenue producing program that will include, but not be limited to, assisting all athletic programs, awarding of scholarships to student athletes and the subsidizing of special events or programs endorsed by the Chelmsford Schools and Athletics Department, that will encourage and promote the growth of the student athlete.
